Meta-Critic has so far given ciV a score of 95, using 10 reviews.
For anyone who doesn't know meta-critic is a website which creates an average score for games out of scores from several reviews. (They also do movies and music, among other things.)

This places ciV 6th best game for all time. It is tied at 95 with Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn. It is surpassed only by theses 5 games, all with a score of 96, Half-Life 2, Out of the Park Baseball 2007 (?!), The Orange Box, Half-Life and Bioshock.

I think this is a pretty good sign of things to come.

Cynical stance: That might be because these early reviewers get an early copy and some "attachments" to it - and feel or really are indebted to giving a good review. Perhaps one of the criteria was they could only post the review before release if it was a good one. One could perhaps wait for the full release that levels the situation for all reviewers and we can be more confident of free and independent reviews.

Normal stance: Sweet. Just increases the want.

Lol no, not owned by valve. Metacritic is (unfortunately) the only respected review compilation site for games. Triple A titles tend to get better meta scores than they should, for some reason. Of course, civ deserves its good scores ;)

unfortunately, Metacritic doesn't aggregate scores from most websites, only a select few. For instance, the site I write for doesn't get included in metacritic scores.

On the other hand, my site wouldn't be on there anyway, as our review copy is not a pre-release copy.

1. Why don't you contact Metacritic and let your site be added?

2. They don't only put up pre-release reviews, but any review from outlets they know of and consider worthy of being on the panel.

1) We have tried for 5 years, they aren't interested in independent sites being added to their scores. Neither is GameRatings. Instead we do our best to improve our readership without such nice tools as those.

2) Right now, only pre-release reviews are listed, so we wouldn't be there right now anyway :p

That's truly awesome and very good news. I hope they are right.

Is Meta-Critic also owned by Valve?

/sigh

Valve probably wishes they owned metacritic since it's popular due to being extremely useful and handy.

Metacritic simply grabs reviews from every available source and gives a composite score, with blurbs from the reviews and links to the reviews.

I love metacritic. I hardly base everything on reviews but the mix of "official" reviews and user reviews there are often very telling, and it's a handy way to drill down to specific reviews and find reviews from many sources.

2 out of 5 games, and 1 collection, are all made by Valve, and having played the orange box, I hated each those. Why they're so highly rated confuses the heck out of me.

Ooh, ooh, I know the answer to this!!

It's because many people like them.

It could be that you just don't like their style of game. There are tons of people who think all the Civ games are boring and awful, but that doesn't mean they are, it just means Civ games aren't for everyone.

That and most review scores, especially the 'official' ones that get listed no wikipedia and metacritic don't even sue half their scale for 95% of games they review (on a scale of 10, 5 should be average, not below average).

Meta Critic has been abused by game companies through manipulation of content and/or reviewers on several occasions. Add to that the less than transparent/fair conversion from the letter scores and the limit to publications and you end up with a purely mainstream aggregate.

I much prefer looking at gamerankings.com, not nearly as snazzy but seems to me at least to be more 'on the level' (they have Civ5 at 93.79% currently with 7 reviews).
