Does anyone know if there is a way to globally assign your cities to focus on research or gold fex or do you have to individually go and change each one? Civ 4 had the slider which it seems was far easier and far less pointless micromanagement whereas having to scroll through each and every city to change it's focus whenever you want to press for more gold seems very tedious to me!

Well, that's one way to put it. If you call that micromanagement...
It's not like it's very demanding to go to a city and change the focus of the particular city. You'd probably spend more time in Civ 4 managing city specific health and happiness than changing a city's focus in Civ 5.

The slider in Civ 4 wouldn't, for example, adjust the balance between commerce, production and food in a city. Neither would it adjust the specialists. It was just a conversion rate from commerce to other entities. And it was universal, so you couldn't specialize or differentiate cities, except by running specialists (well, you could somehow differentiate by building different buildings, but I guess you'd call that micromanagement...). In which case you would bypass the entire slider.
