Middle Ages Mod idea thread

Here are my suggestions:

Maybe, instead of just keeping the Pope happy (the Charlemagne mod was too easy) you can constantly fight the Pope over such issues as investiture (the right to appoint Bishops over districts) or marriages/divorces (much like King Henry VIII), or even appoint an "anti-Pope" and declare the Papal Pope to be a false Pope!
This is only just a recipe for more fun, because if you do that then every other state that follows the Pope will almost instantly declare war. Your civilization could also harbor a Great Prophet, Martin Luther, and your civ could be the first Protestant civ, thereby starting the Thirty Years War.

You could also attempt to make an Archbishop of yours a Cardinal and place him to the College of Cardinals, the clerical body from which the Pope was originally elected from. In this way, if your Cardinal within the College of Cardinals gets elected as Pope, it will be extremely beneficial to you as he will favor you and your civ over other civs.

And, as a further option, you could request the Pope for a Crusade against the Holy Land and colonize the Holy Land [Palestine] by creating Crusader states, which will function much like Overseas Colonies in Vanilla Civ. Or you could start your civ as a Crusader State.

These are all just suggestions, but I think that, if implemented, they will work (and they'll be pretty fun)!

However, I do like your idea for discovering the New World as a victory option, and building an Expedition sounds pretty cool. But what will the various parts of the Expedition be? You will have to include a sort of "Stasis Chamber" and all the other parts that make up the Expedition/"Spaceship".

I have released the first version of this mod and its fairly huge, over 1 GB unzipped. You can check it out at the below link....

In reply to your suggestions they are all good ideas. Right now I haven't changed up much between the Pope/Caliph and what the King did but I do plan on adding new options for the Popes. The Pope can force his own ideals on your Kingdom such as you say the right of investiture and things such as banning the use of the Crossbow which one pope did. In place of the "Boston Tea Party" there could be several options the Pope has to punish would be kings such as.. Excommunication, Interdict, Anathema, or even call a Crusade against you.

We could easly incorparate the ideas of the war of Religions and declareing your own "anti-pope" into the new Conquest system.

I like the idea of College of Cardinals and having your own Cardinal elected as Pope. Not sure exactly how to incorparate this into the current game though. Each Civ in the game at the moment has their own Conquest they must complete and I somewhat based the Conquests on actualy Historical events. Like Byzantine must withstand the Ottoman Threat and the Arabs must withstand the Crusaders.

I love history and thats one reason I love the Civ4 games so much as they take you through History. So I would love to incorparate all the Major events of the time period into the game in some form or fashion.

Wow you have been quite innovative and busy Kailric! Congrats on the release of this mod. :goodjob: I especially like your plans to add more features for the King/Pope (issuing missions, banning techs, etc.)

Yeah, I have actually started on some of the coding for this to make it all modable through XML but decided to put that part on hold. If I waited to release this until I had everthing in it that I wanted the world may have come to an end first, ha.

Anyway, I downloaded that music pack you mentioned in the other thread. Thanks!

For some reason the game is crashing when it says check XML.

For some reason the game is crashing when it says check XML.

Before I started packing all the art files I would get random crashes at Checking XML on my Desktop PC running windows Vista. The game would run just fine on my laptop running windows 7 though so I was at a lost on what to do. I did a search then for Checking XML, searching all the Civ4 forums. There are a few threads about it. Nothing I read about helped me though and only after I started packing all the art files would the game load right everytime on my desktop.

I haven't had any problems sense then so I not sure what to tell you. You can search the forums for others with the problem. I posted a couple links to threads below.

Also, I guess you tried more than once to start the Mod. Sometimes it would crash a few times and then start up. Like orlanth said, make sure your game is up to date.

And like they always say...

1. Check to see if all your drivers (video, sound, etc) are up to date.
2. Try restarting your computer
3. Try reinstalling the game

Here are some links...
Do a search for Checking Xml crash.

I didn't have the latest version. Its been a really long time since I've played col.

I just took a look at the mod and here are just some renaming suggestions to give the mod a more Medieval feel to it:

I would rename Rebel Sentiment/Loyalty to Your Kingship to Fealty, since a big part of Medieval life was vassalage and vassals, in order to become vassals, had to take an Oath of Fealty, or a pledge of allegiance, to serve their lord.

You could also rename Raider Leaders to Black Knights, since Black (or Dark) Knights were originally knights who did not serve any lord (or Free-lance, but that was a term that wasn't coined until Sir Walter Scott wrote Ivanhoe)

And, as a random event, you could have a peasant uprising if, in-game, a player isn't treating his peasants well enough (remember the old joke: "Sire, sire, the peasants are revolting!""I know, they so are!")

I would rename the Heavy Infantry to Man-at-Arms. Men-at-Arms weren't necessarily knights, but more like trained professional soldiers. Whereas you could, in the heat of battle, capture a knight and then threaten him with your Misericorde (which was a special dagger made for these situations) and then ransom him and get a lot of money, you couldn't do the same thing with a Man-at-Arms, since ransoming him wouldn't yield any money as he was a mercenary for the opposing side.

A "medieval feel" is exactly what I am looking for. I like the idea of Fealty and it fits. Black Knight would fit as well. Never heard of that actually so thats cool to know.

I would like for there to be events in the game for sure. Only so much I can do at the moment though. If someone wanted to create events I'd be happy to post them in the Thread.

We may can do something special with Men-at-Arms in that the Player can Hire mercenaries. If a player wants to concentrate on building up his economy and not so much building up an army he can just hire them.

Its funny you mention ransoming Knights as thats something I want to add. Actually, much like in my Privateer mod I would like to make it so that Knights have their own stats and a "stat card" that tracks things like the number of battles won, the lowest hit points the unit was ever at, etc.

From what I read ransoming was big back then and if you was a Knight you stood a good chance of not getting killed in battle even if you lost. I am going to update the download forum with a "wish list" or features to be added later sometime soon.

Pretty fun so far! Using my nitpicking for advantage, while playing I made a few spelling fixes (Pilgrams -> Pilgrims, Benedictine Monk, Parish Priest, Shepherd, etc) and attached files here.

Thanks orlanth, my spelling is atrocious (looked it up on Dictionary.com :)), so yeah, any spelling corrections would be apprieciated. I added lots of text so make notes of any thing you see and post it and I'll fix it. I'll be posting an update soon and will add your corrections.

You mentioned a few posts back about makeing events so if you get the urge to do that then by all means go ahead. I can even edit the EventTriggerInfos to add new checks for events if need be. I been working with that some already. The event system that have was a pain to figure out.
