Welcome little12!

Once you complete the non-optional techs of an era (in this case currency) you will automatically advance tot he next era. If you're playing a scientific civ, you'll gain a free tech in the new era, determined randomly.

On the map screen, your capital will have a star next to it's name. Clicking it will bring up the embassy and espionage screen. There you can order embassy and spy missions and see which civs you know and with which you have an embassy.

Even though it is an 'Optional' tech, Literature really isn't. Libraries will help you learn things faster and they provide culture for border expansion. The faster you get smarter the sooner you get new toys to play with (bigger and better guns).

All the governments are 'Optional', something I never noticed before until Sparthage did this list. :goodjob: But the sooner you get out of Despotism, the better.

Except for Literature and your government, most of the Optional techs can be ignored. Military Tradition (Cavalry), maybe not, depending on your civ and UU. Cavalry is the first universal 3 move unit and can greatly help in warfare. Cavalry Armies are potent, too. :trouble:

Generally (and your milage may vary) the other Optional techs can be ignored. You don't need to research them on your own. But if you trade for one them and then sell it to other civs, that is a good thing. :D

... this is why I have a hard time staying away from Military Tradition. You gotta love those Cavalry Armies!!!

you doesnt need to make a list,

just see circle with one diagonal strip on top right on the tech,
if the tech have it, then its optional

Feudalism (a government tech in conquests) isn't optional.

Right...I must have gotten that confused with Fascism.

Strange that Feudalism is only government tech that is required and the others are optional.

Welcome! I'd like to add a point that the manual doesn't discuss. (In your case you need Currency and will automatically advance). After you advance to the next era, you get a 50% discount on researching a tech from a previous age. Most know this, but some don't. I didn't for the longest time.

What this means is that it's often best to delay research Literature, Military Tradition, etc. until you advance to the next age. It really speeds up your research speed. My exception would be Monarchy or Republic. You want one of these ASAP to get out of Despotism.
