Here’s the problem with that. Temples don't come in the beginning, altars do. Temples replace Cathedrals, and should come later than the Civ3 vanilla temples do.

I've been away for a while, so I'll add my $.02 worth....

Having lots of techs to start with is a very good idea, in my opinion. If we have too many, it's much easier to combine certain tech abilities into one tech (Literacy and Mathom-Gathering combine into one giving both libraries and Mathom House, for one bad example) than it is to split them.

As the tech list grows and order comes from the chaos, I'm sure sure combinations will seem natural and occur -- between buildings/units/wonders and everything else, there is significant room for overlap.

I, personally, don't really care for the names, but since I (A)can't come up with anything better; (B)don't know *why* exactly I don't like them; (C)don't have time to participate in specific discussions; and (D)would prefer to put my input elsewhere in the process, I'm not complaining. Functionality, ordering, and combining are more where my skills lie and the names will be fine....

My understanding is that you can have two civs with different no-era techs follow the same general tree but with certain individual techs hanging off the side (e.g. Uruk-Hai breeding has Mordor-0 and Improved Animals as prerequisites). I think this is cool and could/should be used occasionally. I do not think using this requires completely independent tech trees.

That said, I think making different techs for religions/religious buildings is a very bad idea for the initial release and I fully support efforts to make them look different but function the same and come available to all civs with the same tech. If, once the basic mod is functioning fairly well, people want to add enhancements like that, go for it. For now, though, I think the emphasis must be on the core.

Keep up the good (and other) work!
Arathorn

I am new to this Middle Earth Map production, but I would like to help. I have read the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, and the Simillarion.
I know how to use the Civ3 map editor
I am very good at 3DS max, so I can help with making buildings or unit animations

Can you please tell me where to find all the information I need for this map production and a Middle Earth map to download.

Will anything change when Conquests comes out?

Please do not ignore me, I can be of some help

Nifty! I don't think we have anyone else here who can do the anims. If you want to do the map, I suggest that you refer to the excellent Atlas of Middle-Earth. It really is the best resource, on-line or off for maps of ME. And yes, we do think that things will change with conquests, but mostly with the scenario. At last check we seem to be quagmired in the tech tree...

I learned to do animations while I am making my fanfilm

It is kind of off topic but, me and my friends are making a Star Wars fanfilm, I am the producer, here is the website

http://free.hostdepartment.com/l/lureofthedarkside/

-all the pictures are low rez, all the space scenes and rotoscoping, I made them

We are still furiously editing it, sorry it is not very professional yet, we are concentrating on editing, soon the website will be updated, with the ship I designed: K-wing

I also tried to make an orc on 3DS, but it was to hard to make the bones (bones are the default way of making organic objects move)

Spread the word of this fanfilm, I think it will be the 3rd best Fanfilm (I'm honest) next to Troops and Hardware Wars

I looked at the past posts, its all technology, I can't be much help with that

But, I can make buildings, people, visuals, icon, pictures in 3DS Max or Adobe Photoshop

Just ask me what you need and I'll do the best I can as fast as I can

 Well, me and PCHighway came up with a few techs before he went to Kansas (searching for a yellow sick toad, or something), but I'll keep them secret a while yet. ;) We'll continue when he's not in Kansas anymore. :D

Pippin, welcome! :D If you could give us a preview of a hobbit unit I'd be very happy. A Hobbit Archer would be super. ;)
The map is not that big a problem, I think most of us could do that. I don't think buildings graphics will be a big problem either, though a few wondersplashes would be nice. :)

Some things will change with C3C, but not graphics-wise, just in how the game functions (I think I'm right here, and I'm a beta tester after all :) ).

Just my thought, Arathorn. We gotta start in one corner of the puzzle, that's all. :)
About civ specific techs I think you might be right, but I think we should use techs "not required for era advancement" as much as we can (not all the time, but...). We know how that functions, after all. And if a tech just gives "3rd orc archer" the other civs wont study that, and wont pay for it either (just think about how popular Free Artistry use to be, after Shakespeare's Theatre has been built).

I'm posting a slightly updated Unit Lines document here, which has been made while me and PCH made unit techs. Alterations are marked with yellow. It's just some new unit names, basically. :) (Pippin, please check this if you haven't seen it before, especially for unit graphics you might make a better version for. Just ask for specifics. )

Nice to see Arathorn and Noldodan back, now I'll know who I'm arguing with again. ;)

I will make a mesh of a hobbit archer (clothing is one of the hardest parts of 3D meshing). I will start once I finish my trip to Israel for Labor Day. I'm in a cyber cafe right now. Also, how detailed must this be, curly hobbit hair, layers of clothing will be difficult to make. What are the applications? Will it just be an icon, move around, a still picture. It would be helpful to know these before I start.

Check the Tutorials forum for a tutorial on unit making. :) Download Flicster, if you haven't already.
It would be a unit, i e at least four animations (fortify, death, default, attack, did I miss any essential?) at quite a lowgrade solution. It would also be good if you made civilopedia pics in the same time, these should be finer, but they are not as essential. Check Kindred72's hobbit unit (and the ordinary human units), to get it to look as part of the same universe, at least. ;)

Actually, I've alway been here. I just never found a real reason to comment before.

Peregrin_Took:
For units, what technique will you use in MAX?
Why didn't you use character studio to animate orc.

BTW, SoCalian, school? Already? I still have a week more untill school starts :)

Im glad to to see that we have somone that can make units here.. I guess well need that.. I have a ton of schoolwork right now, so I will be in here rarely...

@doc: Not all people are as lazy as u ;)

Doc M:
Well for MAX I just emailed discreet and asked for a demo disk. But the disk contained everything and I can do anything in MAX. I recently sent and email requesting 3DS MAX 6 and hopefully that will have character studio. At this point I just use regular MAX. I am working on the bones tutorials so in the meantime I should just create structures.

When I am done with the tutorials I will try to produce all the units you guys chose to use. If we had all those units I could probably create an introduction video or victory video. The graphics will be a lot like Morrowind, but the rendering will be better and sharper.

In what format should I render the images? NTSC DV?.avi? other?

Can you guysplease tell me some structures I can make while I work on the character tutorials

Should I have the units be able to face in the 8 directions and 4 types for each?

@doc: Yes I have school. I know it is still summer, but apperently the Kern High School District doesn't think so. Ahh the wonders of the California public School System.

Hobbits:

I think the hobbits should have more of an advantage then just defensive units. They should be able to build rangers. The rangers could be their all around unit. Also, they should have a government with very low corruption and high hapiness; it could be called Shire Council or something. If the hobbits only had a passive, defensive strategy they would not be fun to play. They should have that good government and a thriving economical status.

Doc M:
Do you have the Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind, it has all the textures you will ever need. Playing that game is like drinking the Great Lakes with a spoon.

How many culture types will we have and what are they?

Do we have a map yet of Middle Earth?

Will we replace all of the views in the city view screen

On making diplomacy figureheads:
I think I will be able to make figure leaderheads with emotions and slight movement (Doc M: I will just modify that soldier head in the tutorials, it will make a full 3D face; if you know what I am talking about) during the diplomacy screens.

About the school thing, in my country school starts 8th September, but Sir John, u are right, I am lazy :)
@Peregrin_Took:
I use MAX 5, but I think in this moment it is best to use MAX 4, because there is many plug-ins for MAX 4.
As for the game, I don't have it, but I can get it. Anyway, it is stupid to get it just for textures.
Yes, I know that tutorial. Do u think you can modify it? I mean, isn't it better to make new head. That way you can control it better. And there is that great digimation plugin, head creator.
About the bones, IK is too havy for me at this point, so I'll stick to the caracter studio.

Doc M:
I have never made a head before, but I have midified that soldier face. All you have to do is delete the AutoKey sets, animations, and helmet. I probably could modify the "creature" to create any Mordor creature: Cave Trolls, orcs, goblins, etc. I have made a mechanical AT-PT (Star Wars) character with bones, the tutorials really do work.

Can someone please tell me what structures I have to make on the first page? Like Doc M's Minthril Mine

Where can I find Max 5 plugins Doc M?
