Plotinus said:Incidentally, what is the source from Tolkien for the notion that his geography became our own? I know that his stories are meant to be set in the distant past, but is this specified further - like when, exactly, and how the lands changed? Did he envisage another cataclysm like the one that ruined Numenor, or a slow evolution? And do we know that the Middle Earth of "The Lord of the Rings" is the predecessor to Europe, as opposed to any other part of the modern world?
It's in the Book of Lost Tales. The onlly major factor discussed is the return of Tol Eressea to the shores of Middle-earth as Britain; the rest is simply a bloody history of battles.
(Essentially, the Elves request that Tol Eressea be brought back to Middle-earth to pick up the few Elves still there. It happens, but, when they reach Middle-earth, the island is attacked by a band of Men who kill most of the Elves. The island is left anchored off of Middle-earth, forgotten.)
