Finally got around to the gatling gun. Nothing to say about it that hasn't been gone over previously with the pistol cavalry. Finished up the pistol cavalry as well. The gatling gun animations are a bit less jerky, and look less sped up from missing frames. I used the mech infantry gun sounds and effect rather than the machine gunners. Partly cause of the lower rate of fire, and just because is looks and sounds more impressive.
Also, did used one of the boer cavalry riders for the Texas Ranger since it looks like one already. Just slap a tin star on him, and he is ready to shoot some comancheroes.

Speak of the devil... I was just about to ask about porting that lovely gatling gun. Fantastic. Thank you so much man, this is going to replace the machine gun in Civ IV for me. I never liked that they came with railroads, and their strength isn't adequate for fending off infantry and tanks. However, change em to a Gatling? Perfect for the Industrial Era, sending away riflemen corps and cavalry galore.

Do you think you'll port the Anti Aircraft gun? Certainly a better one than the SAM Infantry.

Also, I have some bits of time now. I'm making some more units. Next up is a Jōmon Warrior, a perfect warrior replacement for the Japanese, or perhaps a good barbarian or minor civ unit for a Japan scenario. And making the patterns for the Meso What if Industrial Era cannon so we can actually get that made too...

And here is the Jomon, when you have time / if you want to. :) Don't worry about patterns or anything like that, i can put that on later. Although I think I forgot to merge the vest together in the back though...

I haven't ever looked at it. I don't know how time consuming it would be. If it needs the animations converted it would be a while...

I thought we had done this unit already, but no, that was the sino warrior. Not japanese. So, this model has a spear, but the reference pic is an archer( and so is the included nif). Is this going to be a spearman? Also, what textures are going to be reused? This will determine how to arrange things in the texture file.

Oh yeah, I should have explained that more, sorry. Yes this is Japanese, from the Jōmon period, when the people there were of a mixed ethnic heritage of sort of Caucasoid, mostly Mongoloid. Yes, this would use a spear, but I think the Pikeman animation should work best for him. The reference picture is for the outfit. The vest is the fur from the Chinese Warrior, the skirt / under outfit would be the whiteish texture from the archer from the included nif. The spears pole is wood and the point is the stone texture I included. The round bits on the spear are rope. And of course the face / hair can be taken from the archer too, I'll refine those later. The mask from the mask reference picture.

If the AAGun is hard, don't worry about it. :) It's not a pressing thing at all.

That Chinese Warrior was/is a very good unit. I use him for China, Korea, Mongols, Tibet etc. The existing Asian Warrior I use for the S.east Asian civs.

Thank you, I was hoping to fill in the gaps more with the Chinese Warrior. He fills in a missing Xia Dynasty gap. I'm going to look to fill in the Shang Dynasty too, but also some fantasy units. I think we could use more Avatar the Last Airbender units too, like benders and ships. The ships, with some retexturing, could be used for Northwestern what if Native American units.

I'm still thinking of Airships too by the way.

Why not use this guy for SE Asia Warrior?

I use that guy for the Indonesia and Malaysia civs, I use the existing asian warrior with the staff for Khmer, Thai etc. I felt it should be used by someone.

If your looking for fantasy asian stuff, look no further than Dynasty Warriors, if you want inspiration for Chinese fantasy, alot of movies out there was well taking place in different periods.

In Japan though, it wasn't always a united culture, I've become interested in the various steppe cultures(turkish/mongol) and have been including them in the latest version of my mod(Not out yet). That led me to the Siberians, which reminded me of the Haida(Siberians crossed over to America etc), and I have read the Haida have similiar line art and totem poles to the Northwest Pacific natives. That got me very interested in the Ainu. I didn't know some of the other islands and were their own kingdoms at one point as well, but thats another topic.

Here you are. I crammed everything into a single 128x128 texture rather than go with a 256, or multiple texture files. So, not amazing resolution. Especially the mask. I made the mask and "vest" a separate trishape with both sides of the faces drawn rather than double the faces. I started doing that with the sailing ships to save polys with the sails.

Well that's ok, it works well enough I think... Gives us a unique Japanese Warrior unit replacement. Tuned it up a bit, releasing it now. Thank you for your help again. :)

I finally have a ship to add to the Mighty Ships thread lol. Here is an Ainu boat that is ready to be worked on if you have the time and want to. I figure it makes for a good Fishing Boat, or perhaps a Japanese Curragh replacement.

Could someone give this poor guy worker animations?
Walter beat me to it.

I made an optional straw hat. It looks too much like an asian hat in game I think.

I'm going with ancient work boat. The sail textures on the reference pictures aren't usable. Here is my first attempt to recreate one. I haven't got the the hull, but in the mean time I thought I would get input on this:
Ainu_Sail.png

The sail is arguably the most important part of a sailing ship since it is the most visible part of the ship.

That hat is something I can use though, on a Medieval Era Chinese worker replacement unit I have planned. It'll be Tang Dynasty.

Yes that's right, ancient work boat. I think the sail is good so far, but I'll look for more reference pictures that are more clear if possible.

Do these pictures help? I hope they're a bit more clear at least.

Belatedly, but.... 1. The Mycenaeans and the Sherdans are brilliant, special thanks for the shield of Ajax and the armor of Dendra. 2. The second special for the American frigate. It's hard to live with one frigate for the entire game, in reality they differed in size and weight of the salvo by 8 or more times, even if you do not take into account the lungs of the 17th - the first half of the 18th centuries. 3. And thank you very much for the cannons - artists don't like them very much somehow. 4. Now there is an animation for normal pistoliers-reitar, three cheers. 5. Ugh, finally gatling is not worn on the shoulder, it was terrible.

Lateen sails.... :twitch:

Lateen sails are about 1000 years obsolete. .
No, they have their advantages, so they were put on ships with other slanting sails.

Two pictures at the bottom of the page

They are less efficient and convenient, but a) allow you to get the maximum area on a SHORT mast. b) the need to reinstall is not only a bug, but also an option. As a result, it is optimal for fast ascent and descent.

Awesome I'm glad it strikes your muse.

From what I know of Clippers,
Unfortunately, it's not a clipper in the photos. This is a windjammer, their descendant, but with very serious differences. The race for speed by sailboats at that time was already lost, while windjammers were built from the very end of the 19th century until the twenties. In the photo, it is just very late. Therefore, the priorities and design are noticeably different. Windjammers economically and fairly quickly carried massive low-value cargo. Therefore, the contours of the ships are more massive, the displacement is 2-5 times larger than classic clippers, and the average speed is 20-25% lower.

The swivel gun you posted is an interesting curio; those were mostly used by Russian and Swedish navies operating in the Baltic. In an archipelago / complex coastline setting of the Baltic an ability to quickly reposition the gun would be vital; in an open sea setting it is much easier to reposition the ship itself. AFAIK they weren't used much outside the Baltic. For high seas, the evolution was broadside -> casemate -> turret.

In fact, everything is simpler - the "easier to deploy the ship" rule stops working when the guns become very large for the ship and it is impossible to put a lot of them. As a result, the rotary platforms were on American frigates even before the Civil War - the "Merrimacs" are the most famous, but not the most outstanding example here.

So while the pistol did indeed enter a cavalryman's arsenal very early on due to it being compact, it was for a long time delegated to strictly sidearm status and an emergency one at that. Most early cavalrymen didn't even intend to reload their pistols while in battle, hence wealthier people might have carried 4 or more of those - and most actual uses would occur if one got de-horsed (a 30YW cavalryman using their dead horse as an impromptu barricade to fire their pistol from would be rather standard practice).

Early attempts at integrating firearms and light cavalry were quite unsuccessful. While heavier cavalry has "found" its gunpowder self by early XVII century as harquebusiers (which is what Civ 4 cuirassier actually represents)

In reality, heavy cavalry with numerous pistols -reitars -refused to use the spear by the beginning of the 1550s and displaced heavy horse spearmen in "knightly" France and Holland by the end of the 16th century.

He realized that the main asset of any cavalry, be it light or heavy is speed+mass=impact, and that thus any combat (not recon or communication) use of cavalry on the battlefield was by necessity of that a charge. At the height of pikeman era, this meant that the cavalry would use every advantage to maximise its single impact on enemy formation - hence no complicated manoeuvering, simply driving into the enemy formation at maximum speed and cohesion, discharging whatever firearm you got at the closest possible range, for both real and psychological impact, and switching to melee.

In the 16th century, very deep formations of pikemen were impossible to immediately attack in hand-to-hand without huge losses. At the same time, yes, the infantry had relatively few adequate firearms - the arquebus was a palliative. However, later... Yes, it was Gustav Adolf who was one of the creators of mobile field artillery. The result was a "large cavalry pistol", which worked with monstrous efficiency on dense infantry "boxes" dozens of rows deep.As a result, the users of the" boxes " either died or sharply reduced the depth of the system. At the same time, the artillery fire, which successfully replaced the Reitar shelling, did not go anywhere.

I just used the sail I posted earlier. This is your baby matsuda, so I'll leave the rest to you. ;) I kept the winch, ropes, and crap on the aft. It is all separate and can be removed if you want.

Yeah, lateens are very similar to luggers. Primitive rig, but can be operated by one person if needed. I don't research things before I post. Frequently wrong and never in doubt.

Oh I love this. Thank you Matsuda and MightyToad. I won't object to two or three different sail textures - variety is the spice and such!

Btw I've also learned a lot about ships from this thread, certainly more than I've picked up in the rest of my farflung travels (all by airplane). Time to drag my significant loved ones to the nearest Museum of Ships Maritime Museum. Ah smarter already, I could have been a shipwright.

Request: Could anyone please recommend a good maritime history book for beginners? I'm probably most interested in ships up through the Age of Exploration. Thank you.

Thank you again MightyToad. Excellent job Matsuda and ganbatte yo!
