This is one of so many things I really disappointed with. and also LAME.
0. there are numerous units. not everyone however are upgradeable and lineage comes to deadend too early (And unreasonably) these units are 'non regulars' obtained by adopting national spirits at the beginning of Even Number Eras. If you choose Early Explorer in Era4, you will gain access to TWO units.
- Explorer
- Knarr (Knorr)
And other units available with Empire Government System 'Galleon'
And also units available with Inspirations (Soldier. the most ridiculous 'Line' class unit name ever!, also this unit has no lineage, no other units upgrades to this one nor can this one becomes other units later on)
Neither of the two are upgradealbe no matter what. there's no logical supports regarding to the lack of upgradeability while IRL Galleon becomes Ships of the Line later on (Early SoTL are built on Race Built Galleon hulls).
1. Categorizations.
Basically there are three domains. Land, Sea and Air
Since Aerial Units are late games (and I don't have much chance trying anything further yet) My focus will be Land and Sea.
Land Unts (Army)
There are basically Line, Ranged, Mobile, Siege, Leader (this unit is promoted from Veteran, stronger than usual but always front rank melee footslogger (a leader )
The most numerous units are of Line lineage. also the most lame ones.
There are three subcategories
- Basic Line (Begins with Warband, equivalent to Civ series Warrior but upgrades to Spear (men), equivalent to Anticavalry class in Civ6.
- 'Line-Killer Infantry', categorized as 'Line' but IRL an equivalent to Civ6 Melee class.
- Mobile Infantry. First shown up as Dragoons. I don't know what's good is this unit beyonds better strategic movements when grouped together with Knights (and later Cuirassiers)? no debuffs when fighting 'Anticavalry Infantry'?
These are one big bad examples of fantasy military lineage. which became evenmore ridiculous in later eras when it comes to Second World War. in which separate 'Standard Infantry' and 'Shock Troops' are pointless since in reality 'Infantry' (and 'Cavalry' which no longer hosebound units) are trained and equipped to do either shock attacks with assault weapons, or to hold ground with LMG or SAW as well as antitank weaponry. Better converged these separate 'Grenadiers' and 'Musketeers' of the previous era into 'Rifle Infantry' thing, even convergence point can be as late as WW2.
2. Unit graphics, Nomeclature and Upgrade lineage
This is no less lame. well I decided to put it into one item.
First many units looks TOO similiar (and several times historically inaccurate)
- Knarr and Cog, while both ships are related. both are really different IRL. especially Cogs are taller and bigger. and even can mount fighting platforms.
- Assault Rifle and SMG infantry. it is hard to tell what is what.
Then.
Unit nomeclature. this one is no less lame.
The biggest example is 'Catapult Bireme'
Nani?
devteam got it wrong with Mediterranean Classical polyreme evolutions!
Bireme is too small, too narrow to mount any real catapults.
The proper name should be 'Polyreme' and the smallest polyreme capable to mount catapults are Quinqueremes.
If this is already bad enough, there's worse.
Nomeclature and evolutions.
When it comes to Age 6. basically two units are enabled, and one of the two are 'Arquebus'. and it is ranged.
Historically they're paired with pikemen (Basic Line class in Millennia) in Pike and Shotte formations (famous Tercio), also upgradeable from crossbowmen which are acceptable.
When it comes to Era7. however, new unit also enabled... 'Muskets' , however this unit belongs to 'Line' class (standard Line)... and Arquebusiers aren't upgradeable to Musketeers, while Pikemen do.
from historical perspective. IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSES! Arquebusiers in Pike and Shotte formations later became the same Fusilier,(actual and correct name of 'Musket'.) basically Arquebusiers were the first to get upgrades (when Flintlock muskets came out, it was originally viewed under Pike and Shotte doctrines. Franco-Dutch War in 1680s-1690s dispelled this mindset completely as reginemtal pikemen dropped pikes and picked up muskets and fusils from fallen musketeers to shoot.)
Also 'Fusiliers' are better names particularly when 'Riflemen' unit shouldn't shown up AT ALL. (ironically the term is still considered valid in the age of Black Powder Rifles that are mass produced to equip an infantry regiment.
That's all for now. and I bet @Boris Gudenuf should agree with this
or not??
