I realise that most posters here rely on Davo to bring them their regular shot of LibDem news, so it's slightly surprising that he's left it to others to start this thread ;)

Anyway, Menzies Campbell, the leader of the UK Liberal Democrat party, has resigned, after taking the party into a death spiral as far as the opinion polls are concerned. Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne are the preferred candidates - and no, I haven't any idea what they stand for either.

A strong 3rd party is a useful balance in UK politics, and it's something we clearly haven't got at the moment. Will this help turn it around ?

Oh come on, Ming was an awesome mod and Apolyton would never be the same without him. :(

I was tempted to start this. What exactly did Mingy do Wrongy?

I thought he'd performed very strongly before becoming leader but he just deflated quietly afterwards like a poorly-tied balloon.

My suggestion: the reason why he became leader was mostly because he wasn't a drunk and hadn't any freaky perversions. Not much of a manifesto even by modern standards. It's harder to choose a direction after setting sail.

Am I:

a) Off the mark.
b) Very very wrong.
c) Totally incorrect.

 :goodjob:

I was playing Black and White 2......

Chris Huhne has got to be the favourite really. He's probably te best politician around when it comes to understanding of the environment, and he's very 'presentable'....I think the Lib Dems will be able to sell him very well.

As for Ming, well it's a shame he had to go, many people wrote him off without actually paying any attention to his policies and his arguments, he made the right descion for the right reasons (aka too much focus on his age and not on party policy/idealogy).

I didn't even realise until yesterday that there were any doubts about the man's leadership. It's all rather sudden.

It was very under the radar, but there were signs, particulary around the Lib Dem confernce this year, he never made a good impression

Ming?

Its hard to put much faith in the Lib Dems now. It would be better to give the Tories another chance. Labour and socialism have poisoned our country for too long.

Without proportional representation a third party is a protest vote sink... and thats really a slap in the face to democracy... but hey... we live in a One Party Dictatorship that has an optional bloodless coup every 4-5 years... so what do we have to complain about... we can vote the buggers out... if about 40% of the country who're in the right places agree with us...

I'm so emigrating if David "I look like a baby and have none of the charisma" Cameron and his Only Nasty When The Opinion Polls Are Down Party come to power -.-

Lembit Opik for PM! He is the only one seriously worried about asteroids striking Britain. His weather girl dumping for one of the Cheeky Girls gets bonus points too.

EDIT: I liked Charlie though. His smoking on a train incident (while drunk, of course) gets him bonus points also.

Imagine a Cheeky Girl as 2nd Lady of the UK... that'd be plain marvelous.

The day Labour is socialist is the day Michael Howard's home freezes over.

Ming never was leadership material, most of us knew that when he got the top job.

Enough Ming, bring back FLASH Kennedy.

Btw the SUN was giving 500-1 odds on Lembit's missus getting the job...

Labour, socialist!, maybe 20 years ago but not now! The day a socialist party will be in power, knowing my luck, will be the day i die.

Indeed, first against the wall when the revolution comes!

Last time we gave them a chance... Well, Thatcher. Speaks for itself, really.
And, as has been said, "New Labour", as a party, is about as interested in promoting socialism as Senator McCarthy.
