Just wanted to know what everybody around here thinks of MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games).

I love the plot of most MMORPGS, but I hate the fact that you have to pay money to mantain the server.

I like the concept very much, but haven't found a fun MMORPG yet. :undecide:

I really hope next Privateer (III) will be one... :mischief:

As long as they're free and well-moderated.

I think the biggest problem (for me) is that indeed (almost) all of them are free, which doesn't exactly mean quality. :undecide:

I haven't actually played any mmorpgs yet, but I plan on changing this when SWG is released here. (Or I get sick of waiting and import, whichever comes first. :p)

However I see the concept of an mmorpg being a good one, if its executed right.

While it's not an RPG, Uru: Ages Beyond Myst looks to be the best of MMOGs.

Nope, I like Sim City 2000!

I see it now: the SC2K Demogame!

I occasionaly play Runescape, although haven't for a while now. I realise that it's a really crap game, but it's strangly addictive... (i've never played any other MMORPG's)

I have played Everquest and Asheron's Call. I didn't really enjoy either of them but think the idea behind MMORPGs is cool.

I really don't see the point of them. You jsut take your character and keep playing, walking around, killing enemies, trading and stuff like that, with no end in sight. There's no ultimate goal, nothing to work towards other than getting to the next level or earning enough gold/whatever to be able to get that more powerful item you always wanted...Kinda like life, only I don't have to pay for the privilege of simply existing, and am not in constant danger of being eaten by a Grue or some such.

That said, I do enjoy Diablo 2 quite a bit. Not really an MMORPG, but it has similar aspects. Furthermore, it's free, has the pointless level-gaining, treasure-hunting and addictiveness aspects down pat, and it actually has an end goal to work towards.

I played Anarchy Online for a year and a half. Great game, great people playing it. Quite well moderated too.

But it takes too much of my time. I prefer Reality rather than some electronic substitute.

That is the problem with most MMORPGs. Often the developers don't have enough time or money to create an ongoing storyline, so they just expect that the players will be entertained by the levelling and sell new areas in an expansion pack when needed.

The reason Uru has my interest is that Cyan Worlds won't sell any expansion packs; new content will be added every day, with a new world every month. There are even separate sites for their storyline: http://www.drcsite.org/

And with no levelling or player economy, the focus is entirely on the story. :D

Sounds like you've played Anarchy Online ;)

Planetside is actually the only MMORPG I play, although I am going to play SWG once it's "fixed". Does anyone else play planetside?

I like ones that are free, or you only need to pay for initially.

Speaking of which, does anyone know of some that fit that description? ;)

Not really a MMORPG, but I recommend Avlis a persistant world for Neverwinter Nights.
