Survive Atlantis

The Island/Continent:
Athanasius_Kircher%27s.gif

The premise:
Atlantis is swept all but clean by one giant freak wave. Some believe it was the trailing fire seen go down in the distance, others that it was but a turn of nature, and yet others stand steadfast in their belief that it is Poseidon's doing. Whatever the reason, Atlantis was, up until the wave, the Might To Be Reconed With, conquering about in the mediterranean as far as Egypt and Italy:
Atlantis_map_1882.jpg

The Athenians created an alliance of the free civilizations in the mediterranean against the Atlantian Empire, and while the alliance disintigrated, they kept on fighting alone. The war turned to the Athenian's favour, and they had pushed the Atlanteans back to Atlantis proper when the wave hit, destroying both Athenian armada and Atlantian civilization. Only isolated groups of people survived the Wave, and now it is a frantic struggle to survive, if only to see the next day.

Please Note:
  1. The island is going to sink in a pre-determined number of turns (depending on gamespeed, duh)
  2. Build an Ark to escape (basic, ensures survival)
    a) Direction scenarios a possibility
    b) gives a boost in victory scores
    c) End of game, you lose if you don't have one
    or, most likely
    c) You win. It's the spaceship of the past. I mean, why would you stay if you might die at any time?
  3. Create a forcefield around Atlantis/Kill Poseidon/Laser that prevents other meteors from hitting the earth
    a)scientific win
    b)Was already under construction pre-Wave
c)fewer hammers than ark, but you need 3 different and VERY rare resources,
    or, most likely
c)resources needed are inland, where monsters like minotaurs roam.. very powerful creatures
  4. Sacrifice people (victory points)
    a) Can only sacrifice captives
    b) can only get captives from WAR, maybe
    c) gives victory points
    d) pushes back the sinking time, maybe
  5. Enslave people
    a) Gives boosts to hammers, only for buildings
    b) requires a civic, building (like "cages")
    c) eats health, which will be VERY limited
  6. More victory conditions pending thought
  7. Research EVENTS
    a) rather than techs.
    Example
    Spoiler :
FROM PAGE 3 and 4, I'll clarify more later
Well, like I said before, techs like that wouldn't make sense in a (imagine Poseidon saying this) "I swept away youse buddies an' soon is your turn" way, there just wouldn't be any need to start from the basics when all you need to survive lies conviniently (if in various states of disrepair and rot) in the ruins of a once (too) great civilization. The more I think about it the more married to the idea of the 'months to a few years at best' timescale, with the limited techs it brings. The flavour of a tech focused on lost fishermen finding their way home, allowing for fishing on the coast and leading on to building an ark is just too awesome an idea to let pass.

As side-thought, the idea that one could research a technology that helps guide fishermen home (other than, say, a lighthouse.. which isn't too bad an idea now that I think about it) is somewhat ludicrous. Instead, these could be, rather, events that go with the spirit of the story. Say, an event (say tech) that's called "hidden cache of weapons is found," that lets you build so and so many units of THAT sort, "interpreter of signs finds his way," that lets a civ build some religious/magic unit, "blacksmith's shop rebuilt," for units.. Et cetera and so on. Would give the whole thing a "Lost" feeling, and would make for a fun game.

Think of it as rather than having mystics/scholars research a tech, the survivors are gearing their efforts towards, say "send the people to to look for trinkets/Swords/survivors (underline as needed)" (thanks Kolchenogiy), instead.

Putting incentives for being the first to gear your survivors towards a goal (say, tech) is that they get something extra. Like free units, limited # better units, luxury, et cetera, would also make sense for this. Along with goody huts like "Cache of mystic runes!" and "Survivors!"

  8. Timescale:
a)It's daily. Days to weeks to months to, perhaps, a few years. A day is forever struggling to survive
  9. Limits:
    a) Big limits on health and luxuries, to stimulate that these are basically small groups of people, though it can grow if you surivive long enough.

Pre-Alpha to be out: 30th Sept. 06

Also, the map would basically be a continent surrounded by water, no wrap, maybe some islands close by.

Suggestions, help, any response would be welcome.

Research links
Encyclopedia Mythica: Atlantis
Atlantis: Myth or Reality?
And the all-powerful wiki

First off, this is a great Idea. Secondly, would it be for Warlords or no?

Have you searched atlantic on wikipedia yet?

It would be helpfull to do some extra research (you may even be come up with some more ideas)...

Leader names, faction names forthcoming

Here is a list of the various leaders of the survivor

Greek "Barbarians" (not playable)
When there is loot to be had, the Greeks are never far. Also fueled by their hate of Atlanteans. Now that the risk is less, more greeks has joined their Athenian brothers.

Come in ships, or spawned on shore
Heroes spawned by events (Like FfH) ?
Hero: Odysseus?, more?

King of Atlantis
With none of the old institutions around anymore, nothing was to stop him from assuming the title. Fits his ambitions well.

Heir of Atlas
Decided that now was the perfect time to reveal that he was, in fact, of a direct male line to the legendary Atlas, first king of Atlantis. It'll be hard to prove elsewise, seeing as there's not so many records about anymore.

Wave-Born
He was spared by Poseidon (or was very lucky), and took it as a sign. Surely He has commanded that he should be king? Surely.

Old Merchant
An eye for gold can profit a man when the price of failure is his life.

Middleage Noble
Power comes naturally to those who have commanded it on a daily basis, so he did what he had to do.

Society of the Deep
The cult was already organized when the wave hit, so no time was lost in gaining power over the survivors.

Returned War Veteran
Various tours in Hispani, Nubi, and Tyrrheni let him learn what it takes to survive. It's a wonder he managed to get back before the wave, what with the Athenians in his heels.

Village Elders
Not everybody lived in the great city of old, and though the village was well protected, it, too, was wrecked in the Wave.

Half-Greek Blacksmith
Not many trades were available to sons of an Atlantean father and Greek mother, but it made him strong enough.

Athenian remnants of the Anti-Atlantian Alliance (cooler name pending)
Alliance base of operations in mainland Atlantis, invaders before the first wave, now scrabbling to survive special ability: No attacks from barbarians

Mediterranean (or Tyrrhenian, wiki is hard to interpret) freed-slaves,
From the various military conquests, got the upper hand when their captors died by wave.

School of University
Atlantis sported some very nice schools (say, only), and the head does not wish them to be lost forever

Order of Poseidon
Religious fanatics. Thinks they can appease him, by blood.

Sons of Ares
Military order. Think they can get Ares on their side, by blood.

Armed Farmer
When you have food, you have power.

Ordinary Man
Surprising what man can do when the situation calls for the extraordinary.

More?

You know, that is a damn good idea. I'mma do that. Also, do note that this is to be loosely based in reality. Real loose-like.

If this were to be a real mod then i could help out a bit with the programming.

Thanks, looking into python with only my highschool java and c++ classes under my belt, I felt somewhat overwhelmed. Not to say I'm not up for learning. It'd be great with help, though it might be better to go into programming after the concept is more solid than my half-researched firstdraft.

special unit: Odysseus?, more?

Is this based all only greek mythology or are there any real-life units (any real greek heros-> may need research for that)

I would suguest haveing greek-myth monsters too (Charybdis,Scylla, Harpies,Sirens, Maybe a cyclopes here and there)

I've resently read the odyssey (sp?) so i can put a few ideas from that in.
Two Kings:
Of the old two-king monarchy, the two kings split up, but still lay claim to Atlantis, and it's now away-washed throne.

King 1
One of the two kings.
Royal units
special ability: Convert non-royal, non-greek units
Hero:

King 2
The other of the two.
Royal units
special ability: convert non-royal, non-greek units
Hero:

Decendent of Ancient Despot
Before the kings came to power, many generations ago, might be that Atlas was made king of Atlantis. This great house lay claim of descendance from that mighty ruler.
Some Royal units
special ability: convert non-greek units
Hero:

Hmmm... i didn't know about the 2 kings think

Great Houses:

Merchanter Family
A great house that was founded by rich merchants, always looked down upon by the other, more "noble," houses.
Auxiliary units, Great House units
special ability: something with money
Hero:

Founding Family
A family sporting the descendance of one of the first kings.
Great House units
special ability:
Hero:

Oldest Family
Claim that their house is older than Atlantis itself
Great houe units, some old and traditional units
special ability
Hero:

Upstart Family
A lesser noble family finding itself, for the first time, with real power
great house units, some revolutionary units
special ability
Hero:

Revolutionaries:

Peasant Revolt
What is there to say? Supersticious peasants that want to get the hell out of dodge.
revolutionary units, "peasant" units
special ability
Hero:

Atlaneans with Greek influence
Local atlanteans that have been invaded far too often for them to be called wholly atlantean. Greek influence.
some revolutionary units, some greek units
special ability
Hero:

Athenian remnants of the Anti-Atlantian Alliance (cooler name pending)
Alliance base of operations in mainland Atlantis, invaders before the first wave, now scrabbling to survive
greek units
special ability: No attacks from barbarians

Mediterranean freed-slaves
From the various military conquests
Various
special ability:

Institutionary:

School of University
Atlantis sported some very nice schools (say, only), and the head does not wish them to be lost forever
University units
special ability: something with sciesy stuff

Order of Poseidon
Religious fanatics. Thinks they can appease him, by blood.
Priest units
special ability: something with 4 elements

Sons of Ares
Military order. Think they can get Ares on their side, by blood.
Battlepriests? Some type of military units
special ability: something with killing

Sounds interesting... i may have to do some research myself

If you need more help with learning python then you should look at gengerbreadman's python tutorial (see my sig for link).

Im taking java in highschool now... and did a bit with python and xml is really simple. That pretty much my area... along with idea making :D

Edit: i would suggest using( or including) the map under the subtitle "modern"

As for the two-king thing, I was thinking of sparta at the time. Not at all married to the concept, however. Perhaps something more like an oligarchy?

As for the research, wikipedia, like you said, is great.

Do you plan on having atlantis on a map past the strait of gibralter or sicily?

It think this is the way it goes... altantis was past the pillars of hercules and it was first suposed to be near italy but was moved during alex the great's time.

I also believe the egyptians played a roles in the story too.

Edit: this is were you can find some location hypotheses of atlantic.

I'm more partial to the middle of Atlantic ocean scenario, and yhes, egyptians should be incorporated.

I'm also very partial towards having different smaller wonders associated with regions of the world, like EE3 and the trade routes, only with mercenaries.

Egyptians could be incorporated as some sort of wonder that spawns some type of egyptian unit every so often.. This could be done, as said above, with more regions (say Nubia, Mesopotamia, Thule (hehe), Thrace)

And special mythical units would be nice to see.. Though as barbarian or buildable? Perhaps with the fantasy-end of research would unlock them? Perhaps they should be faction-specific? Wonder-specific?

I think that the egyptions in the myth were priets and they were the ones that told plato the story.

Well, Egyptions were allied with the Athenians (They believed that Athena was the same as one of their goddesses, so there was a special bond there), so mayhaps the Athenians would be able to, later on, call in Egyptian reinforcements, as well as help from the other Acheans, i.e. Greeks.

Another thing: The Greeks should be called Acheans. That's what they called themselves.
