I wonder what Clancy books the boys been reading.

Their description sounds a lot like the battle in Red Storm Rising between Soviet bombers and NATO naval forces. The Soviets didn't suicide their Badgers. They used the Badgers to fire old Kelt missiles, which had been modified by removing the warhead and replacing it with additional fuel tankages and a radar signal which resembled that of the Badgers. Plus the autopilot started jerking the missiles up, down, left, right to resemble a bomber trying to avoid a missile.

This caused NATO planes to deplete their missiles shooting these drones, only to be defenseless when Soviet Backfires came in right after the Kelts.

Yeah - that sounds about right - guess it was detailed memory that was up the creek on that one - I still got the strategy mostly correct :D. So it was really a direct swap of missile for missile instead of plane for missile.
