Modem making noise

hi,
I recently posted a problem with my hard drive, thanks for the help,yet i had to take in to best buy to have it fixed. The HD was formatted and Win98 was reinstalled, but now when i sign on to the internet my modem continues to make noise, the noise is the same noise as if you pick up the telephone while signed on , a constant stream of static. Can anyone explain this or help me.

Are you saying that your modem makes the noise continuously while logged on to the internet, or while dialing in and logging on?

For starters, go to Device Manager [Right click 'My Computer' and choose 'Properties' and then find the device manager part.] and find your modem. Right click and choose 'properties' for your modem. There should be a basic setting for your modem volume somewhere in there.

It's been some time since I used Win98, but there might also be modem options within your Control Panel. This should also allow you to edit the volume of your modem.

If none of this works, then check to see what driver version you are using and then check if there is a newer version that you can upgrade to.

(I'm assuming you have already fully patched Win98.)

The modem makes a constant noise,
i checked in the device manager and the modem is working fine, the driver is up to date and the modem volume is at zero, yet it still makes noise.

You can set a text setting to turn-off the modem sound (if the volume control on it won't work).

So, to turn off sound, go into the Control Panel, go to Modems, select your modem and click the Properties button. Click the Connection tab and click the Advanced button.

You see a fill-in box called "Extra Settings." This box is where you can include any modem initiation commands you want to include. In your case, you want the speaker turned off, so add ATM0 (that's a zero, not an o). Click OK twice, then Close.
