Central Asia could be Durrani.
Vietnam I would prefer them to focus on Dai Viet (oddly enough, this could still fit into Modern).
The rest is fine.
I would like to put a few more options on the table:
Ashanti: really a regional powerhouse with a lot of merit for inclusion.
Guarani: for a Modern native South American option so we don't just focus on colonial nations.
Omani: a great option for a modern Islamic nation and could come from a possible Kilwa in Exploration.

No Haiti mention yet? Well, I’ll add it.
I thought about mentioning Haiti, but I think Mexico already fills the slot of a modern revolutionary civ.

I forgot to mention Brunei, which it's rarely bring up in these discussions. It's great transition option from Majapahit without having to go to modern Indonesia.

British Empire
French Empire
Russian Empire
Prussia
Poland
Belgium or Netherlands (depending on whether you put NL in Exploration or Modern)
Sweden
Austria-Hungary

Qing
Meiji
Mughals
Siam
Safavids
Malaya
Türkiye or Ottomans
Oman
Saudi
Afghanistan
Maori

Buganda
Ethiopia
Zulu
Morocco
Zanzibar
Sokoto
Ashanti
Dahomey

America
Mexico
Gran Colombia
Brazil
Navajo (Diné)
Tlingit
Lakota
Muscogee or Cherokee

This is of course a longlist, right? I think on the shortlist I'd want Britain for narrowly missing out + the Maori, Sweden, Ethiopia, one of the west-African Nations, at least one Native American nation, Islamic Persia, Modern Age Turkey, Modern Age Indonesia or Malaysia, Poland and Brazil.

I created my list focusing on regional and cultural balance. I also considered gameplay in terms of which civilization would provide a better transition from X civ in the Exploration Age.

North America
America
Cherokee
Sioux

Latin America
Mexico
Brazil
Colombia
Guarani

Africa
Buganda
Ashanti
Ethiopia
Morocco
Zulu

Europe
France
Germany
Austria
Great Britain
Netherlands
Poland
Sardinia Italy
Sweden

Middle East
Omani
Ottomans

Central Asia
Russia
Durrani Afghanistan
Safavid Persia

Indian Subcontinent
Mughal India
Gorkha Nepal

Southeast Asia
Siam
Dai Viet

Far East Asia
Meiji Japan
Qing China
Joseon Korea

Oceania
Maori

Hellenic State or Kingdom of Greece or Hellenic Republic

The Modern Age isn't my cup of tea unless a lot of fictional gameplay elements are included, but I would like to eventually see Modern Greece as part of the game. Firaxis has specified that the chosen civilizations need to be at their peak in the corresponding Age, and I know that the Greek civilization isn't at its peak in the modern era, but this inclusion will allow the Greek culture to be represented in every age.

Greek culture is represented every age because Exploration and Modern civs can have Greek Traditions

(They need to let you keep the Greek name+city list…but no need for Greek specific uniques)

So, I have never gravitated towards modern civs in any Civ game, something which I'd never really considered until 7. I love the alt-history of Civs which didn't quite make it succeeding, and that's the antithesis of 7's modern age... There's only a couple of the known modern Civs which I'd instinctively gravitate towards, and who knows if their mechanics will interest me.

So I will give firaxis kudos and say that pushing back the start of modern before where most people would expect is a big boon for me! My wish list would be heavy on polities and peoples that in reality got subdued or colonized, but that nonetheless had their last hurrah in this time period. I'd rather see the number of post-colonial nations like the USA/Mexico kept down, and see more surprises like Buganda.

Definitely this list! I’d just switch Colombia with Argentina, the Marathas with Nepal (Gurkhas would be a cool city state special unit) and add Merina and Canada (with a focus on the fur trade and exploration.)

I wish I had put Argentina on the list, but I chose Colombia because it is one of the best transitions from the Incas (the best is Peru, but I definitely don't see that happening). And I chose Nepal because it's maybe the most similar option to Tibet.

Finally I found someone who don't list from Persia to Japan within a single "Asia" category :D
