Hello Im new to Civ 4 and enjoying the game alot. I just want to know if more people are playing the game with or without Mods. If you are playing with a mod can you please list which one and why. Thank you.

There are a lot of popular mods (one in particular, which was shipped with BtS, springs to mind), but typically they change the main game a lot. This is fine of course, if that's what you are looking for!

If you only want minor changes you can find a lot of that kind of thing in the Creation and Customisation forum (as well as full-blown SMAC mod development etc), and info on how to create your own mod. It's also pretty simple to edit .xml files yourself, if there is some small aspect of the game you want to tweak (e.g., first person to research Divine Right gets a Great Prophet). Always make backups if you decide to change things yourself!

I like the main game pretty much as it is, and don't play with any downloaded mods. I've tried them, but it's not really my "bag", "man". I prefer to tweak little things in the .xml myself (e.g., in my signature) and create my own miniature mods.

One thing I thought was missing in vanilla Civ and the expansions was ethnic diversity. Sure, Warlords added greco-roman and asian cities, and BtS added a bit of diversity to the units, but there are still massive gaps.

Therefore I downloaded the excellent EDU and Ethnic Artstyles mods (the latter includes the former), and added a load more ethnic art I found in the File Database myself. I wouldn't play without them now.

These mods do not change gameplay at all, which is nice, as I like the game enough already. Maybe I will, in future, tweak the XML a bit or add some of my own Random Events, like Munch says, but apart from that, it's fine as it is.

Hi!!, I was wondering if any of you guys have knoledge of a mod that adds a few (just a few, not too many) new aircrafts (and perhaps some ships, and vehicles, but just a few) to the game, because, I would really like to have a diferent fighter on my aircraft carriers, and perhaps a small bomber for the navy.

Or should I try to mod it myself?

EDIT:

And perhaps a baby carrier (you know, like the USS Wasp), to be capable of carrying choppers, and Harriers(or JSFs))

I tend to play the Fall from Heaven mod when I'm not in a mood for the standard game. However, when I want to play the standard game I often use the 40 civ mod since I also like huge maps.

I'd like to thank everyone for there input seen alot of good stuff. Thanks again.

I did a short poll a week or two ago; and with those that voted, around 2/3 of the people played an unmodified game. It was a little surprising given how easy it is to mod simple but still interesting changes to the game.

Most people really do play games "as is", applying only (if even) patches from vendor (ie. game developer).

I don't have any trouble evaluating and installing whatever mods or patches I want. I still play with 3.02 + solver's + BUG + own XML changes, which means "99.99% unchanged gameplay" (only gameplay changes are my changes in unit upgrade paths, addition of one unit, and some very minor modifications).

I believe you could set up and word a poll so that you would get a majority that played heavily modified cIV. Heavily modified in this case would mean "major gameplay modification by a mod", eg. FfH. As it is, polls are influenced by how and where the questions are asked, and which questions are asked..

i play unmodded as far as scenarios. for HoF games i use their mod as required, and i do have Bhruic's unofficial patch for non-HoF games (and used Solver's for 3.02).

if you are interested in scenarios, hubby is really likeing Rhye's and Fall of Civilization. it comes with BtS, no need to download anything extra. it has a funky feel, starts off based in "real history" and then you develop it as "alternate history" of course. and the RfC fans, and Rhye himself, are patient and friendly in answering newbie questions :).

"And perhaps a baby carrier (you know, like the USS Wasp)" i did not know, thanks for prompting an interesting trip to wiki!

Kinda the same as KMadCandy... I play unmodded... If I ain't in the feel for a normal game, I try something wierd like starting in the modern era, playing much too few civs on a large map, marathon speed...

Or ofcourse play something else
:)blush: I didn't say that, did I?)

Just getting into the modding aspect of civ right now. There are some amazing looking re-skins of units that I'll be adding as soon as I work up the courage to mess with the xml. Then we'll see about some of the other more encompassing mods that are out there...who knows?

be afraid, be very afraid ... you're more like me than you realize! i very much play by mood, since the goal is fun, and my oddball games are stuff like OCC diplo voting for my opponent, culture victories with no culture slider, domination during always peace, etc. maybe i should change the title under my avatar to "oddball"?

i'm biased obviously, but i do think folks who aren't in the mood for normal / want to try something different or whatever should give silly ideas a whirl. i get inspiration for some by surfing the SG forum here, or events (current and past) at Realms Beyond.

Infact, I don't know too many of his songs, but most of the music I listen to is made before my own birth.

Know Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits? He's coming to Denmark in April! Guess who's already bought a ticket and is joyfully waiting! :D

I play standard, apart from a upgraded warlords promotion mod, that expands the warlord units upgrades, however i'm going to get those new graphich artwork mod's installed at some point to as they look good an do fill in the gaps, personally i think firaxis should have taken both these ethnic graphics upgrade mods' an tweaked them up to encompass any units missed & given them a full release in the patch

You are welcome.

I play unmodded as well, but now that I finally came up with a "unit naming convention", well, I kind of feel the need for a "JSFighter Wing" ("Joint Strike Fighter" for my carriers (I like big fleets;)), just that.
