Monarch problem

Hi

I'm finally able to play at monarch level. (Thanks, Orion :goodjob: )

However, I'm having a serious problem  . As soon as I get 2 cities, I quickly get declared on by the most aggressive civ on the continent.

I tried chop rushing my settlers to get them out quickly but it seems the AI always comes at me with some weak chariot/archer rush.

I tried playing Elizabeth because she has mining as an early tech so that I can find the military resources quicker. However, even after getting my settlers out, I get declared on and I don't have any time to build any of the good wonders like Oracle.

How can I fix this?

P.S I play Vanilla version, latest patch. I'm trying to get BtS later.

I think this means you are not building enought troops. Such sudden declarations 'out of nowhere' - i.e. this early in the game - are almost allways the result of the AI beeing clearly superior in power.

Another reason might be, you found a religion, ai founds another one, so they hate you because you are a infidel. Just skip the religion, wait until AI's spreds to you, adopt. But even with religious hatred, they would not declare if you had a somewhat credible military.

Are you building archers to defend your cities? You shouldn't found cities without protection; barbarians will get them or this will happen.

That may be part of the problem. I try to defend the city with 2 archers before REXing.

I know xanadux says it's better to use offensive units like axeman or spearman to defend cities but they take longer to build.

I want to get cites into prime locations quickly so that I can get the pyramids and run an SE economy.

I never have this problem (or at least rarely). A city with no defensive unit at all invites a DoW like nothing else - are you settling the 2nd city with no defender?

That being said, with an AI close enough to declare war after two cities, you should be DoW on him. :)

Your first city after capital should claim a military resource and serve as a production center pumping troops nonstop. That combined with GOOD DIPLOMACY will deter most invasions
