Monarch Student IV, Boudica (aka Bootycall to some)

Hooray, another game to play tonight! Now all I have to do is squeeze in 3 rounds of playing (1 for each game I have going) between dinner and a movie with my wife :crazyeye:

Thanks for posting.

On the start, I'm settling in place. Can't really tell anything else until I see what the borders reveal!

I'm the only one at work now, and, well I'm the boss so to hell with it I'm leaving early and firing this one up. My first AP win in the last Monarch Student was cool for something different, but I haven't went after a Conquest win in some time...and the video rocks!

emperor/marathon, to 1720BC
Spoiler :

settled in place
research: fishing-mining-BW-agri-archery-IW-AH

met all those four guys. giggles next to me, heavens blame him.
Just is buddhist, ramesses hindu.
no lovefest pending.
GW got built 2580BC in a far land, so my super units will have tough job defending against barbs.
planning to plant 3rd city to grab iron and maybe conduct a minor war against giggles to choke him a little

Monarch/Normal to 1 AD

Spoiler :
Went warrior/fishing at the start - switching to work boat when fishing was done. Rest was somewhat uneventful - just REX'd since there is a lot of room. Built stonehenge but that was it - pyramids went really early, i didn't try for it because i didn't hook the stone up right away but would have had no shot anyway. All 3 AI's are a different religion, so i'm just going to lay low without a state religion and hope they fight each other while i can build up.

Power rating is good - and tech situation is good so everything is going ok so far...

Should be able to play another set tomorrow - if not finish it.

Monarch/Epic.

Man did I screw up a good start.

Spoiler :
Settled in place. Got a nice chunk of land scouted before it got eaten by a bear. Jumped out the second city early to grab copper to the east. Threw out a third city to the west for the FOUR GOLDS and FLOODPLAINS site

Then I had the boneheaded idea that I should get the 'mids, so I did. But, while doing that, Justin REXd all over the place

So here I am at 25 AD with a stack of Gallic Warriors and Axemen about to go to war with him. I've got 4 cities all with Duns and good defense so I doubt he can do any damage to me. Gilgamesh is pretty far ahead in points, but I imagine I'll catch up pretty easily as I absorb Justin. Take a look.

I'll actually probably immediately go to war with Gilgamesh as well as soon as things are pretty clear with Justinian. But damn, stupid wonder building!

emperor/marathon, to 620AD.
Spoiler :

friends i must confess! something is wrong with me.
when i play boudicea, i can'r see anything in het except those two, erm, traits! one of them looks extremely agressive, and the other is so charismatic.!And i just can'r help but start, erm, leveraging! them...
so i hooked iron with my my third city and started.

this war initially planned as minor local operation to choke some giggles and maybe burn some outpost cities. But after probing his defences i decided to conduct a full scale war. i must notice that gallics are severely underrated. Combination of G3 and CG2 gallics literally tore giggles apart. And it he the AI which is considered the toughest to rush, along with SB.
after conquering giggles i was seeking for a source of cash, and Ram was so kind to build a shrine for me. i adopted buddhism (Just's religion) to keep his hands of me and attacked ramesses (with 6 gallics).

i do not understand how this may be, but they are definitely much stronger than regular swords. 6 of them with a few reinforcements were enough to conquer 3 of ram's cities.
then Just was so kind to build another shrine for me, too. so i made peace with ram and attacked Just, before he manages to get longs.

this one had metal and axemen, but they are no good when defending in cities against highlly promoted swords. After taking Constantinople i made peace with Just for 3 techs and attacked Ram again and so on, providing quite a stable income from captured/razed cities and occasionally extorting a tech.
economy was extremely overstrained (i had to disband huge heap of archers/gallics/workers) and researched barely pulled by 6 or 8 scientists scattered over the country. but, however, cottages grew, and progress marched, albeit slowly, toward CoL. Finally i have hit it and whipped courts in most cities.
judging by announcements, i'm far behind in tech from the other continent, althoug there are only 3 civs there. but i'm pretty sure i have the most land, and will have even more quite soon - and land is power.

I seem to be having problem with attaches - when i insert some attachment into my text, it just reads
Attachment 201296
instead of thumbnail of filename, and if pressed yield nothing but "about blank" page. how is it fixed?

Monarch/Masochism (aka quick)

Spoiler :
1 AD

Settled in place.

Wha bang. Going for early free border pops.

Quick screws the empire. Unfortunately I wasn't able to use the religion because 3 others got founded near me or so. That's fine. They all hate on each other and I run HR to get gilga to friendly.

There was plenty of time to tech bronze then archers on this, and pottery with the FP was obvious. I boxed Justinian out and took most of the SE peninsula so I had an OK 7 cities settled myself across this game..

I go for cuirassers. This means that:

I want that one.

OK I spammed HAs because I need lots and lots and lots of troops to war on quick.

1470dowjustinian0000.jpg

See, slider is off till they're upgraded. City capture gold will help too. Super medic ASAP. Gogogogo.

Justinian escaped on a galleon so I let him live, taking more tech instead of the kill

1660adtechsforpeace0000.jpg

Lot's of culture pressure and a thank god moment as ram doesn't have rifilng. Gogogogo

1675addowegypt0000.jpg

I crush him although he gets rifling with two cities left (how, exactly? they were crap cities, too) and instantly upgrades 7 units to rifles (same thing...).

Massed cuirassers beat that garbage out. Screw quick.

Beeline mass media, give it to Qin, he builds UN, unfortunately Zara likes him more than me grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Get to computers first, crank out internet, beeline fusion and other techs the AI goes for last in space races, and ultimately complete the ship first.

Monarch Epic to 1295 AD (I played a long round because I wanted to remove the stench of that Washington game)

Spoiler :

Ok, after that stupid GW emperor game, back to monarch/epic for now. I’m going to give emperor another go soon enough, but I’m still not sure I’m quite ready to move up, so I don’t mind another go at monarch.

So, on the start – I see nice seafood, cows, and move my scout on the hill NW to check out what else I can see. Some nice floodplains north – that’s good – I actually decide based on that to settle 1 NW. I know it’s one off the coast, which is usually not recommended, but it looks like the river ends, so it might be desert north of the flood plains, and I can easily get both crabs with a city to the east or south anyway. It’s a bonus when I get rice in the BFC, so this city will be food rich and cottage rich. It may be a little short on hammers, but the commerce should be outstanding. Settle and start on my worker.

Civ4ScreenShot0000.jpg

I debate for about 2 seconds going for a religion, and then decide against it – better to take someone else’s religion. Assuming I settle properly, I should have plenty of commerce, so religion isn’t a necessity for that, and I expect to be warring a fair amount with Boudica anyway. I decide to tech towards pottery. Still should have time to tech AH, and if I don’t get horses, can tech archery in time for barbs anyway. I want a strong cottage start. The first hut pops a map, and the second hut ensures barb defense:

Civ4ScreenShot0001.jpg

Having a scout sometimes sure is nice. First meeting:

Civ4ScreenShot0002.jpg

What an ideal neighbor. Let him build me a few wonders, then I’ll take them by force. Second meeting:

Civ4ScreenShot0003.jpg

Of course – a religious zealot. Hope he spreads Buddhism to me and not Ramesses. Then Gilgamesh – I’m already sick of him from the Washington game. Looks like we may be a bit crowded here. Gilgy is very close – he might have to go. Normally wouldn’t want to rush a creative civ, but agg/cha can still do it, if I have enough production. Hut luck:

Civ4ScreenShot0004.jpg

Some of you are going to start questioning my luck – I got two techs in the Asoka game. Having a scout really is an early game advantage sometime! Now off to tech mining/bw. Hinduism didn’t go until turn 39…to Ramesses. I guess it depends on who spreads to Gilgy…the other will probably be a good early target. There’s some really good land nearby, but also some really mediocre land in spots too. I’ve picked out some great backfill sites, but think I need to block some decent land first. I realize after my scout finishes up on the east that there’s a giant peninsula I can block off for myself with gems, dye, banana, cows and seafood, so my first settler is going there to block. I count a minimum of three good city sites there, maybe 4. All I need to do is get the first one down and get the rest later. Tech AH, and find horses, right near a spot I marked as a good block site, so that’ll be city #3. In 2025 BC, I see Gilgy expanding towards me – stupid creative trait. I’ll be forced to expand east and west, not north until I want to take him out.

I’m figuring I need to get several cities down, and then use them to overpower the other civs. My production power city:

Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

Gilgy must have used the oracle/COL slingshot, because he sends a Confucian missionary to me in 1425 BC. I’m not converting yet – with charismatic, I don’t need the happiness, and everyone is a different religion nearby, so no need to choose sides yet. Tech IW, and Bibracte has iron – that’s what I’ve been waiting for. Gilgy is aggressively settling near me – he’s already annoying me. Here I started to play lazy. Instead of getting settlers out to crash my economy early, I start building units in most every city – it’s just a question now of who I take out first – they all have a religion, and all are different religions. Problem is, I needed more cities, and could have handled them with that cottage start. By building units too early, I think I made this tough on myself.

Justinian and I are pleased at this point, and he doesn’t like Gilgy, so that settles it. Couple that with Gilgy intruding on my land, and it seems as if he’ll need to be my first target. Finally, I get around to settling my peninsula. Now I crash the economy – this will pay off once I rebuild. It’s 220 AD, and I haven’t adopted a religion, because each neighbor is a different religion, and adopting one means a sure holy war that I’m not quite ready to fight yet.

Finally, Gilgy makes my religion decision for me:

Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

fine – I’ll do it. I feel like I’ve just played horribly in this game for some reason. I’m teching ok, but have been doing everything lazy it seems. I think I lost focus after playing the GW game for a few hours - I might be a bit civved out tonight. Of course, 2 turns later, I see this:

Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

Thanks a lot for playing nice in the sandbox after asking me to convert. Luckily I had all my units close enough to Bibracte that I started moving them there. Funny - this actually starts to get me fired up about the game, and suddenly I really started to play pretty well, I thought. From this point forward, I really felt like I picked my game up. He suicides his units, and like 3 turns later, he happily will trade for peace:

Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

Fine, I’ll be getting you soon enough. I crash my economy until code of laws, start getting my courthouses out, and Ramesses asks me to join him in a war with Gilgy. Fine, I agree to it…in fact, I’ll even convert to Hinduism for Ramesses, so he and I can buddy up for awhile, just because Gilgy backstabbed me. So even though I’ve played really badly up to now, time to start knocking some heads – I seriously needed to do this a lot earlier. My first city taken:

Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

I take 1 more city, and accept peace long enough for me to get macemen.

Civ4ScreenShot0010.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

This is where I cut off for this post. Played really poorly, but it’s starting to go well – once I take over more of Gilgy’s cities, I’ll be fine. Ramesses and I are friendly at this point, and Justinian DOWs him. I actually start trading all my military techs to Ramesses for lots and lots of gold - he's making gold hand over fist. So basically he and I will be a team for the time being. I figure I'll get Gilgy to say uncle, then turn everything toward Justinian, and continually expand the empire until unleashing the fury on my BFF Ramesses.

Monarch/Epic to 0AD. Well... 25AD actually cause I wanted to finished the Hanging Gardens. And I know what you mean about that Washington game mich. I sorta don't want to bother posting here until I've won this one

Spoiler :

Went down a pretty traditional AH/Agr/Mining/BW, Worker/Warrior/Settler path. Ignored the seafood at the beginning and didn't bother founding a religion. Also ignored early wonders despite reasonably near proximity of stone. Met giggles (again... *sigh*), Justy and Ramses fairly early and giggles is fairly close - so I think we have our first victim. I'm tired of him and his backstabbing vultures.

There is pretty good land around so I Rex out 4 cities. Got the horse/wheat and lotsa hills site to the west. Gold site to the NE. Was hoping for a kind spawn for the copper for city #3, but the copper wasn't very conveniently located (which pretty much negates the UU, since the advantage is you can build swords with copper in my mind - not the guerrila promo.) So I go for IW pretty quick, hoping that that will spawn within an existing city, but nope - so I end up putting a kind of junky city to the NW to get iron/rice. Also put a city on the peninsula to the SE. There are sites down there for 2 more good cities, but my economy's kind of in the dumper because of the massive force of gallic warriors I've built.

Popped a GS in Bibrace, but have him stashed for Philosophy. Haven't teched alpha yet, but construction (and cats) come up in 10 turns or so. Then the invasion of giggles begins. Problems is I'll have to raze a number of his cities, because I can't afford to keep them. Must check to see if he's got any wonders...

In my game, Justy got Buddhism and hasn't spread it to me - what is he waiting for. Ramses got Hinduism and spread it to me and giggles - who converted, but I haven't cause I want to buddy up to Justy.

i began catching up, occasionally stealing some techs from Ram, who happened to be still alive. He vassaled to Otto, and i weighed all my Esp agains him to steal Otto's techs.
They 3 on other continent teched fast though, and i invented a trick to break their lovefest.
Zara and Qin had a defensive pact, and Bismark is a well-known backstabber, easy to bribe. So i gave him occasional monopoly tech (chemistry iirc) for DoWing Qin.
Mwahahaha, poor fools lost tens of turns just revolting to warlike civics and back and scored a heap of -dip points to each other, while all i suffered was -2from Qin for "bringing an ally". He didn't even drop from friendly.
Later i repeated the trick with medicine, and the deal was done: the now hate each other, and Zara+Qin are still friendly with me.
i'm now researching mass media in order to gift it to Otto, let him build UN and elect myself the winner. would be great if i succeed.

Erg. Not going well.

Spoiler :
Behind in tech (except for Justinian, but he's got a huge SoD sitting outside my borders). Not far enough ahead military wise to put a significant dent in Justin, and barely holding off Gilgamesh who's got Maces, Xbows, and Trebs/Pikes while I still don't have iron and am stuck with Axes, Gallics and Spears.

Ramesses is my friend, but not enough of one to join me in war and I don't have anything to bribe him with.

Is there hope?

Monarch/Normal 1 AD to 1200 AD

Spoiler :
Going fairly well - worried about the other continent but i'm sure we're ahead (i hope) Had early war with Gilg - wanted to take advantage of the UU and aggressive. Worked pretty well - i took 2 or 3 cities without too many losses but he had a few longbowmen which slowed me down so i made peace. (normal speed will do that to you!) I switched to Buddhism right before the war since i'd basically picked sides with Just anyway - he's taking out Rammy. I joined him when he asked for the diplo points - and i ended up stealing a city from Rammy after Just did all the hard work taking down the defenders - gotta love when that happens.

Now i'm in pretty good shape - getting ready to finish Gilg off now that i have cats and maces. Just started on education and have a great scientist ready to bulb part of it. The plan right now is to finish Gilg off - putting me way ahead on land, then just peacefully build up and tech trade with Just, and backstab him later. That way we'll have the whole continent to ourselves and might have a couple different options for victory - depends on what the other side of the world looks like.

Civ4ScreenShot0021.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0022.jpg

Monarch Epic from 1295 to about 1800 AD. Still need to knock a few more heads, but looks like this should be on cruise control now. Considering I didn't micromanage at all, not bad. I'm finding that I don't need to micro all that heavily on monarch, but need to give emperor another shot to see how I can fare at that level.

Spoiler :

Where I left off, I had just declared peace with Gilgy. May the peace last for….10 turns. Right after the treaty ends, I’m back on him – with my charismatic trait, I can afford more WW than most. Time for more cities:

Civ4ScreenShot0000-1.jpg

And:

Civ4ScreenShot0001-1.jpg

Give him peace again for gold. It’ll give my units 10 turns to heal, and allow me to get a few knights up and running. Meanwhile, Ramesses gets invaded by Justinian, so right after I tech gunpowder, I trade it and banking to Ramesses for Drama, Music, Engineering and a bunch of gold. I don’t want Justinian to beat him…in fact, I want them to beat each other up a bit while I take Gilgy’s cities. I’ll soon be double the size of anyone else if I do this right. Feels like a state property game to me at this point. My units are all moving up to prepare for one more onslaught on Gilgy – I really want to get to the Confucian holy city and have it for my own. I think that’d be an ideal Wall Street city for me. I tech banking, run merchants as my free specialists in most cities, and start to try to get my economy running strong on 60-70% research. In 1375, get my first of what ideally will be a few merchants in a row to keep the economy humming and keep tech strong. Gilgamesh then manages to steal civil service from me with his stupid espionage. Fantastic. Right as I’m about to go after his stupid capital. It’s still not going to stop me. He manages to steal music too – big deal, because I just teched rifling in 1555. Another merchant – trade mission, and upgrade. Time for him to die. 15 maces just became rifles. It takes awhile, because I lose about 10 battles with 90+ percent odds, but finally finish him off in 1704:

Civ4ScreenShot0002-1.jpg

This was right as I teched steel – convenient, because cannons will help run over Justinian next. I need to get down the emancipation line too, because Justinian teched democracy awhile back. He’s teching SM instead of rifling, which is good – I need a few turns to amass my troops to come after him. So, after about 15 turns, I decide to give Justinian a bit to worry about – Hey Justy, fun is coming from both sides:

Civ4ScreenShot0003-1.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0004-1.jpg

Here’s me and my BFF coming after Justy. Espionage continues to be annoying – Justy steals chemistry from me – the third tech stolen in this game. I’ve had all my EPs pointed at him for the last 200 turns, yet he still is able to steal a tech. Frustrating. But, Adrianople falls without me losing a unit. And, some nice wonders!

Civ4ScreenShot0005-1.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0006-1.jpg

Happiness and commerce – I’ll take it since I won’t be bothering with Astronomy till I take care of my continent. He apparently then steals steel the next turn? How much EP can someone possibly have? He starts producing cannons in every city, but it’s still going to be too little too late. Of course, if he steals rifling the next turn, this could get annoying, but one more city goes:

Civ4ScreenShot0007-1.jpg

Next up, his capital. The Buddhist holy city. Perfect. And spiral minaret, so some nice gold coming in from that. Sure enough, he steals rifling too - I've had 5 techs stolen this game.

Civ4ScreenShot0008-1.jpg

Slowly finishing off Justy, pop a great spy, which means its golden age time. And, I finish off his mainland cities. He apparently has some city somewhere else, so I have to accept capitulation, which is fine. Ramesses wanted to voluntarily be my vassal, so I guess I need to go bash heads on the other continent, which I’ll mount my forces to do right now. State of the world in 1800:

Civ4ScreenShot0009-1.jpg

I haven’t really bothered to manage the economy in this game, so probably need to spend a few turns in this golden age doing that – some missionaries would probably be good now that I have a few holy cities. Also about time to start buttkicking the other continent. Qin is miles behind in tech, and Zara is starting to fall behind. Still haven't even met the Germans yet.

Finally started this one.

Part I, monarch/epic, to 10 AD:

Spoiler :

At first I was thinking about another rex-happy game, good amount of land to settle. But then I decided to try a mass HA's spamming game. Not sure if it's going to work, but I think the leader and the map are well suited for this strategy.

Tech path: AH - masonry (hut) - mining - bw - wheel - fishing - pottery - agri - hbr - iw - archery - writing - sailing - researching alpha

4000 - Settled in place. I'm not a fan of coastal capitals, but this one looks very good. Minimum amount of water tiles, and 2 of them are seafood.

3875 - Masonry from a hut. I'm still not sure about free techs from huts. I think the AIs get some free techs as well, so it probably evens out. Feels cheap anyway.

3725 - 103 gold from a hut.

3675 - First AI is Justinian.

3375 - Followed by Gilga. I find this guy to be the most annoying AI to have next door, with his protective crap and culture pressure.

2750 - BW reveals copper to the NW and I switch to slavery.

2600 - Warrior from the last hut.

2575 - Vienne. Stone for my precious GWall:

Civ4ScreenShot0001-35.jpg

2500 - Someone beats me to Stonehenge by far and I get 52 gold.

2025 - Third AI is Ramesses. Now I fear I'm going to lose the Great Wall as well.

1900 - Stone and a few chops:

Civ4ScreenShot0002-34.jpg

1425 - Tolosa for horses:

Civ4ScreenShot0003-34.jpg

335 - And Gergovia for iron:

Civ4ScreenShot0004-34.jpg

230 - Great Spy settled in Bibracte.

Celtic empire at 10 AD:

Civ4ScreenShot0005-33.jpg

My cities are in hammer mode now, to spam those HAs:

Civ4ScreenShot0006-33.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0007-33.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0008-31.jpg

Horses ready:

Civ4ScreenShot0009-33.jpg

I'm not sure about the target. I'm leaning toward Gilga, he's already stolen my iron with his annoying culture, wich is going to be a pain.
But he's protective and shares religion with Ramesses.

About my neighbors.
Gilga: Hindu, likes hereditary rule and can attack at pleased. Annoying guy overall.
Justinian: Buddhist, likes theocracy and doesn't declare at pleased. One of the biggest zealot, so shared religion bonus may be huge with this guy.
Ramesses: Hindu, likes organized religion and doesn't declare at pleased. Builds a lot of wonders and not enough units to defend them.

I can join the Hindu club and wipe Justinian. But It doesn't make too much sense to me. He looks to be boxed in and I think he's bound to end at war with Ramesses, for border tension and different religion.
Or I can join the Hindu club and keep founding cities. That southeastern peninsula has some top quality land.
But at this point I'm committed to a warmongering approach, so I may just settle a single city to block the peninsula and backfill later.

Or I can convert to Buddhism to create a 2vs2 scenario. Shared religion is enough to be safe from Justinian. The obvious target is Gilga, or he's going to be a pain in the ass for the rest of the game. Even more if he gets longbows.

Not sure if it's going to work. I've tried mass HAs games a few times. Sometimes it went amazingly well, other times I failed horribly.

Part II, monarch/epic, 10 AD - 1010 AD:

Spoiler :

One of those times when HAs spamming goes amazingly well.

techs: alpha - currency - math, poiy and meditation from Justi - priesthood (Justi) - CoL - calendar (Justi) - monotheism (Ram) - researching Philo

10 - I convert to Buddhism, Justinian is pleased now, wich means I'm safe on that front. I dial Gilga's number:

Civ4ScreenShot0000-37.jpg

And Ur is auto-razed:

Civ4ScreenShot0001-36.jpg

55 - Eridu captured, Oracle is here:

Civ4ScreenShot0002-35.jpg

100 - Uruk and Great Lightouse captured:

Civ4ScreenShot0003-35.jpg

115 - First general becomes a medic HA.

175 - Nibru auto-razed.

205 - Stupid event with Justi:

Civ4ScreenShot0004-35.jpg

220 - I politely ask my pal Justi to gift me Priesthood and he's happy to help.

295 - Kish is well defended, so I bypass it and capture Lagash first.

345 - HA regrouped and Kish is captured. 3 free workers and Gilga is dead:

Civ4ScreenShot0007-34.jpg

460 - Now I have a lot of unemployed HAs and a crashed economy. So the next move is:

Civ4ScreenShot0008-32.jpg

Byblos captured and I get 2 free workers:

Civ4ScreenShot0009-34.jpg

490 - General settled in Bibracte.

535 - Memphis captured. Has the hewish shrine, generating 13 gpt.

565 - Ramesses has catapults. Yeah, makes sense while getting destroyed by a horde of horses.

580 - Heliopolis captured. My horses need some healing and regrouping, so I take a break:

Civ4ScreenShot0010-29.jpg

745 - Peace expires and I'm ready again. That hindu missionary on a hill will be very hard to dislodge. And yes, I attacked across the river to capture it in the first turn:

Civ4ScreenShot0011-29.jpg

775 - Alexandria captured, with the Apostolic Palace.

820 - Stupid AP forces peace.

930 - Peace expires, I declare again.

940 - Thebes captured. Stonehenge and Hindu shrine (17 gpt). Stone in the BFC. How I managed to build the GW remains a mistery.

960 - AP again to stop the war, but this time I defy.

960 - Elephantine captured and Ramesses is cornered with 3 cities up in the tundra.

Tech board:

Civ4ScreenShot0013-23.jpg

And HA statistics:

Civ4ScreenShot0014-19.jpg

Justinian is almost friendly from religion alone and doesn't care about Ramesses. So I think I'll try to extort some techs before wiping him out completely.

Economy is completely crashed, but I'm building infrastructures and a lot of cottages. Horse archers' lifespan is almost over and I can't support more conquest, so Justinian can live for now.

I'm actually thinking about a cheesy AP win, wich is now under my control. Justi is easy to push up to friendly, and I'd have to spread Hinduism to the other continent.

Still have to settle that nice SE peninsula.

Monarch Epic 1800 to 1910, domination victory

Spoiler :

I’m just finalizing my economy before getting a naval force massed to go destroy the other continent. Seems like it’ll be the easiest way to finish the game Finally meet Bismarck:

Civ4ScreenShot0000-2.jpg

I don’t care how big his SOD is, he’s too far behind in tech to matter. I’m going to hit communism, and then get my naval forces ready with Astro/combustion. About 40-50 turns of teching and building, and the force is ready. As it turned out, I probably overbuilt for this - could have easily done this with about 1/3 of the units I sent. My transports needed two trips - the first trip would have been sufficient. I forgot to take screenshots before attacking Mao, but it was over quick – I think I lost maybe 5 units taking 4-5 cities, and he capitulated in 1887. Immediately gave him his cities back, and amassed my force to go after Biz and Zara who apparently decided to have a defensive pact. Here’s my first stack ready to go after Bis. I also have a stack of about 50 more infantry coming. Zara is actually ahead of me in tech by a couple techs, but sheer size should make sure it doesn’t matter. I shut off tech for a bit while upgrading and building my naval units. Apparently Zara and Biz canceled their defensive pact – smart move for Zara, as I’m DOWing Biz with a stack of 127 units.

Civ4ScreenShot0002-2.jpg

As you would imagine, it goes well.

Civ4ScreenShot0003-2.jpg

That’s the second city I took (I keep forgetting to take screenshots this game for some reason). And, that same turn:

Civ4ScreenShot0004-2.jpg

Hopefully this gets me enough land for a domination victory, otherwise I need to take the fight to Zara. Unfortunately, I’m still about 4% short, which I find amazing given that I have vassalized 4 out of the 6 civs. So, 2 turns later:

Civ4ScreenShot0005-2.jpg

Basically, everyone is at war with everyone – me and my vassals against him and his…I don’t like his odds. First city:

Civ4ScreenShot0006-2.jpg

I lost 1 unit. Second city, he has a lot of units in, including 2 tanks, so I actually lose 2 artillery.and 2 infantry. And that’s enough for him.

Civ4ScreenShot0007-2.jpg

The end in 1910. He was way ahead of me in tech, because I basically shut off tech once I hit artillery - there really wasn't any need to go much further with the size of the stack I was bringing to the party. Stats below:

Civ4ScreenShot0008-2.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0009-2.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0010-1.jpg

Pretty much set every city to build military the last 100 turns, and it got to where I had an obscene number of infantry and artillery. Much easier game than the GW game. I probably could have done a better job crashing my economy earlier by rexing – I lost some ground by delaying the rex, because I knew I could be lazy once I had blocked off that peninsula to the east. Decent score – I’ve had two Boudica games like this now. Looks like I may have to try one of the other monarch games on the forum now.

And part III, monarch/epic, 1010 - 1660, end:

Spoiler :

techs: philo - cs - mc and monarchy (Justi) - paper - machinery - construction (stolen) - compass - optics - aesthetics (stolen) - education - liberalism - ppress - feudalism and theology (bis) - literature (Zara) - gunpowder - guilds - banking - chemistry - steel

Early win and awkward tech path, delaying lib to get optics. Why? Cheesy AP win, of course.

1030 - Giza captured.

1040 - A lone egyptian swordsman captures Alexandria, defended by a lone HA.

1050 - Akhsomething auto-razed.

1060 - Alexandria recaptured.

1080 - Taoism founded in a distant land. Yes, that's philo going so late and I actually was getting it in 2 turns. This is the first religion on the other continent.

1110 - Hieraconpolis razed and Ramesses is dead:

Civ4ScreenShot0001-37.jpg

1120 - Switch to OR and heavy infrastructures building.

1290 - I get a Prophet, used to build the Christian shrine in Pi-Ramesses. Now I have 3 shrines.

Civ4ScreenShot0002-36.jpg

1300 - Switch to Bureaucracy.

1395 - Bismarck finds me.

1400 - Construction stolen from Justinian.

1435 - Aesthetics stolen from Justinian.

1510 - Next AI is Zara.

1530 - Despite my detour to get optics, I almost won the lib race. Someone beats me by 4 turns.

1550 - Last AI is Qin.

1575 - GS builds academy in Bibracte.

1605 - At this point I've spread Hinduism to a german and a chinese city and gifted a missionary to Zara. Everyone has at least a hindu city, so the diplo victory is unlocked and Justinian is still friendly. I check the members window and I'm way above the required votes.

1660 - AP makes me wait a bit, but finally:

And other continent. No wars over there, pretty much everyone was pleased at each other.

And detail of the voting members:

First time I've used HAs spamming on a forum game, and I'm quite happy with the outcome. With that amount of land, I could have chosen any victory condition. There was still room for 3-4 good cities on that peninsula, but I went for missionaries instead, to help the economy.

I think this game is a bit more challenging, compared to Joao or Asoka games. Land here wasn't as good, but still a lot of room to expand.

edit: I didn't extort any tech from Ramesses with peace - dow again - peace etc because Justi already researched vassalage and Ramesses could have vassalized to him during those 10 turns of peace.

Spoiler :
Wow, good job on those huge stacks. Interesting how we have very similar scores with 2 completely different games.

Monarch/Epic to 1360AD - for AP, Lib Race, etc...

Spoiler :

So I took a stack of Gallics and then more Gallics and cats and wiped out giggles. Took his capital and 3 other cities, razed the rest, which predictably Justy backfilled... Captured the oracle (doesn't really do me much good now that it doesn't come with a free tech! :) ) Did the ol' peace with him for 10 turns when he had 2 cities left to get 3 techs from him.

Then I sat back for a little bit to get the empire back up to speed cause I was down a little tech-wise. Justy DoW'ed Ramses and asked me, his Buddhist best bud to join in. I really shouldn't have bothered because, as I predicted, Justy took one of his cities, got peace, and I was stuck in a war with Ramses that I wasn't fighting and couldn't end. I didn't need the diplo bonus with Justy cause I was already +7 brothers of the faith and the +1 mutual military struggle disappeared quickly (if it was ever there). That was kinda dumb, what was even dumber was I decided to finally take my stack of highly promoted Gallics with some cats and attack Ramses to see if taking one of his cities might get peace, but I underestimated his capability and lost my stack, including my supermedic axeman. Really dumb.

I did get peace with him though and relations have somewhat normalised. I went for Lib through the theology route, bulbed philosophy, most of education, did paper and lib the hard way, but won the race in the 1200's and picked printing press, cause I didn't have the prereq's for Nat or Astronomy. Nevertheless, I needed PP for the + :commerce: from towns, villages, and for replaceable parts/rifling... Traded phil, edu, lib around our continent for everything Justy and Ramses had, then met Zara who has sailed over. Traded those + PP for a lot of techs Justy and Ramses didn't have, so things are looking pretty rosy on the tech front. Teching Astronomy now (bulped most of that). Figure I can get guilds and gunpowder off ZY and then domination of my continent is almost as good as done.

Around time of the lib race win, I was building the AP and the Hagia Sophia for the GEng GPP... Lost out on the AP my four effing turns - to Ramses. Lost out on the HS as well, but took the 1200 :commerce: and did some selective upgrading and deficit researching.

Anyway - things are looking pretty good in this game. Building some macemen now just to keep my power up, but I think I'm going to beeline rifling and then go berserk on Ramses. I'll consider Justy's fate after that.

Can see the Chinese and Germans due to map trading, but haven't met them yet. ZY seems to be the tech leader, everyone seems to be getting along and the Germans seem to be going for cultural victory as they have wonders spread in 3 cities...

Fun game, shouldn't be too hard to pull out a victory of some kind from here.

Empire shot, then tech status...

@DMOC
Spoiler :

As for me, i just liked the initial place so much that did not seriosly consider any movement. Yout point is strong, despite more water tiles in BFS.
Btw, do 2clams+crab really make a strong GP farm?

and report, to 1826AD - UN Victory
Spoiler :

I researched to MM and gifted it to Otto. However, it turned out now, that Qin is just Pleased with me - he dropped -4points for gifting techs to Otto.
Throwing them at each other's neck kind of backfired me...
So the first half of round was repairing my relations with China, and the vote...
View attachment 201434
It turned out that Zara, who has been warring with Bismark all the time and stopped only 2 turns before the vote, is Friendly with him. Just unbelievele.
So the second half of round was enhancing my relations with Zara. I even annexed a small barbarian island south of my continent only to have a single confucian city in my empire and adopt Confucianism as SR. Finally, i managed to get them both at my side:

my score would have been much higher if i was not such an awful diplomat, but still
