Welcome everybody to the 39th edition of Monarch Student Prime! After a quick one-week break, MS prime is back, ready to lay the beatdown on some more AIs. Who's this week glorious leader?

Yes, it's time to bring out Mr. Caesar himself to show these AIs how classical warfare is meant to run. As if he needed any introduction, Julius has a great expansion set in organized and imperialistic, allowing him to gobble up large amounts of land with a reduced upkeep rate. But the Romans aren't known for their trait, they are known for the best UU is the game.

    His UU is the Praetorian:

Everyone's favorite beatstick, the Praetorian is known as the best UU in the game. And why not? A sword replacement which sacrifices its +10% city attack bonus for a massive increase in strength from 6 to 8. This makes this UU an absolute monster and praets alone on any level sub-deity have been known to take out 1-2 civs. Use it well as it can win you the game in the first 100 turns.

    His UB is the Forum:

The Roman UB is not as well known, but it is still pretty damn good. A market which produces +25% great person generation, it works great in tandem with massive warring. While you war, great people can keep your economy alive through bulbs and golden ages while you continue to conquer. Solid as well, but not overpowering like the UU.

    The Start:

Dual weak seafood, but a great grassland cow as well. The romans start with fishing, so this looks to be a pretty nice capital, with a lot of forests to chop out some, oh I don't know.... PRAETS?!?!

    Fractal map again.

Huts and Events are OFF, add events in the custom scenario if you wish. (just make sure to cover the top part with your hand so you don't see the AIs )

And a cut-and-paste from Meatbuster's Monarch Student games:

Save the file and place it in your Documents/BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Then unzip it into your Documents/BTS/Saves/WorldBuilder folder. Then use Playing a scenario to play your desired level. Or use custom scenario if you want to remove huts and/or events.

    Recommended Checkpoints:
    *1000BC or 1AD
    *500AD
    *1000AD or Liberalism
    *Victory!

Please remember to put the journals of your adventures inside spoiler tags.

For Monarch+ players please try to add archery back to the barbs in WB. If you don't, AIs will capture cities with archers very early in the game, which is no fun. If you prefer easymode barbs, that's fine too, just don't go wondering why an AI captured a barb city in the very early BCs!

    Spoiler :

Before we started, I named myself Gaius Gracchus, and changed the name to SPQR and the Roman Republic.

I SiP, teched Ag-AH-BW(Yeah, I probably should have gone hunting instead of Agriculture.)

I met three leaders quickly on what appears to be our continent.

I found myself lagging behind in tech, got up to four cities and by that time had IW from alphabet, so I started building Praets since we have Iron in the capital's BFC. 50 BC(late, I know) i DOW'd on Pacal II, even though he's the strongest power.

At 1 AD, I stopped. I've got 4 praets on Pacal's eastern cities and eight on the western front, with more on the way. Tech situation is under control(I think).

I would post more screenies, but I'm in a rush right now and have to go.

As always, questions and advice are welcome. Save attached.

GGracchus, in your first pic, you can see all of the terrain and you're just naming Rome. How did this happen? Is it a bug?

I was adding Archery to the barbs. When you exit out of WB, that happens. I forgot to zoom all the way in, though.

This map is almost perfect for the Romans.

    Spoiler :
You start with Iron, and as long as you can deny the Germans and the Mayans from copper early on, you win with ease. Just don't over-expand....

I was waiting for a new one of this to come up. I'm trying to move up to monarch. I'll see what I can do with this after finishing the noble club game (playing that one on monarch fyi).

I see that the not so nice comment from NihilZero turned you into some evil-devil! You started to hate us I tell you!

what happened to the awesome 2x corn + flood plains/riverside grass starts?

I think being Rome kind of draws you into going for IW, but since cat wars are more effective I would actually think about going for construction and try to pickup IW on the way.

without doing any math, I would start with WB on 1f2H, then switch to PH to finish quicker while teching towards BW.
the worker should be synced with BW somehow.

oh god I so hate coastal starts with weak food.

I tried this start you talk of,and it seemed to work ok. But Rome starts with MIN so BW first tech while building a worker and chopping out 2 WB,s might be faster?

    Spoiler :

On a single land mass map, maybe... ;)

    Thanks for the game. :)

Me? A not-so-nice comment? Never! All my comments are nice. :mischief:

I just observed that BigTime is (or used to be :p) quite generous with his starting positions. What's bad about that? If I didn't like his maps, would I have played so many of them? I love the MS^ series, I must have played at least twenty of them.

NihilZero's comment wasn't mean or anything, and that cow glitch start was just a friendly jab at that. I honestly just take the first map I roll, so I'm not really being generous or anything. We have had some good and some not-so-good starts so it all balances out. Really, unless it's a gold or gems start, they really don't make THAT big of a difference.

    Emperor/normal to 1948:
    Spoiler :

I SIP and build a worker while researching BW. My worker emerges just as BW finishes and chops out a work boat. Next I research Agriculture and AH. Unfortunately copper/horses are not in the BFC.

Meanwhile my starting warrior scouts the land and quickly finds Frederick to the East. After waiting several turns at his border I'm able to steal a worker and escort him back to Rome.

I use the 2 workers to chop out a settler and found Cumae to the North to grab copper for barb defense. Meanwhile I beeline IW.

As IW comes in I found Antium to the South for access to gold and then begin to churn out Praetorians when iron appears in the BFC. I switch research to beeline The Alphabet, declare on Frederick and reduce him to one city saving his capitol and another nice one for myself. Peace brings in a raft of backfill techs. I turn research towards Currency.

While attacking Frederick I locate Pacal nearby along the east coast of the continent I'm on. I declare on Pacal, still churning out Praetorians while my workers build a road network for faster movement between my cities. After a few turns Pacal has but one city left; peace with Pacal brings in another set of techs.

Next up it's Asoka. Currency is now in so I keep most of Asoka's cities. I'm a bit careless though and my units go on stike one or twice which I remedy by building wealth in a few of my cities. Asoka is down to once city after awhile and peace brings in CoL. I whip in courthouses everywhere.

Frederick decides to capture a barb city which I was attacking - Big Mistake! I wipe him off the map. Next, Pacal begins to expand beyond my liking. I declare, reduce him to one city and get some more tech for peace. Finally I wipe Asoka and then Pacal from the map.

It's roughly 1500 AD now and I'm working on Education. I have a full continent to myself, but I'm far, far behind in tech, Liberalism having gone in 1300 AD.

I meet the remaining civs; Mao Zedong has vassaled Tokugawa and is the score leader. Together they occupy about 2/3rd's of the second continent, the remainder occupied by Pericles. All three are Jewish with Mao and Pericles friendly towards each other.

I use my massive land advantage to build infrastructure in my backward cities while teching towards Communism. I intend to build a workshop economy. I run into happiness problems once the other civs adopt Emancipation and so I'm force to make a tech detour through Democracy.

Fortunately, Mao goes to pleased early on. Whenever he turns WHEOUHRN, I beg 10g from him. I find this amusing - one time Mao goes WHEOUHRN but is broke; so I gift him gold which I then immediately beg back. ;)

After quite a few turns in State Property (Mao's favorite civic), Mao finally goes to friendly. War is no longer an issue.

I beeline computers and build The Internet; this brings me to tech parity. From this point on it's just a matter of time before I'm able to build and launch my spaceship.

I win a space victory in 1948 AD with a score of 45,022.

Best UU's, according to my opinion, is:

    1. Praet
    2. War Chariot
    3. Quecha
    4. Immortal
    5. Fast Worker

I like Numidians too, but they're not "best."

What sort of weird player are you? :D I LOVE coastal starts, with two fishes. It makes the opening so much easier to play.

Immortal, normal speed, choose religions. Up to 1AD.

    Spoiler :

Teching straight for iron working. Settler is almost finished when iron is discovered near Rome, so instead of settling iron, he's sent towards my nearest neighbour.

The invasion starts in 1000BC. I have a nagging feeling it ought to have been earlier, but there you go.

The Mayan civilization is destroyed in 200BC. Five cities kept, one razed. Mutal will be cottaged and become the new capital. My first great scientist built an academy there.

I was teching maths and currency, hoping to trade for alphabet, which didn't turn out well. No possible tech trades so far. In 1AD Asoka still hasn't got alphabet.

Hopefully after I conquer a couple of German cities, Frederick will give something good for peace.

    Stupid tech situation...

I was planning on getting Calender next, but I think I'll go construction instead for catapults.

Got overexcited when I saw iron and guess what? I got praet disease. Game is in the crapper but Maya and Germany r dead. Shoulda taken it slow.... Good map tho coz the choices r sooo wide its really hard to know whether to attack settle gold and gems etc etc If I did it again I would just settle spam up to rifles. And Bigtime thx for response on forum. I didnt realize my enquiry would stir up so much hate...

Jeez, my invasion started 900 years later!

Edit: Crap...after taking two cities, I approached his capital with like 4 Praets at CR II, and I find about 10 archers/holkans/axemen. Crap...time to throw in the towel. I'll remember that next time I should use cats or attack earlier.

Doh, I messed up my game as well. I had converted to Christianity early to befriend Frederick, but he switched to Buddhism. I eventually ended being hated by Germany and India, both of which teched a lot faster than me and refused to trade. What's more they build the Apostolic Palace and kept demanding cities back.

Note for next game: more praets, less peace.
