Monitor Limitations on a Laptop

Hello. A friend of mine has purchased Civ 3 after playing Civ 2 for many years, but he has a problem. His display properties allow for a maximum screen area of 800x600, not enough to run the game. Is there anyway around this or is he stuck with a useless game? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I'm on the brink of buying a new computer, mostly to play Civ (a, the killer app). At the back of my mind, I'm considering a laptop.

What screen area do you need again?
