Small tip to all, try to keep at least 1 of every kind of resource in our borders. in fact you may want to build your empire to suit that purpose.
However, what's better is to monopolize at least one, you can understand what this means 8)

I think I still prefer to have one of each resource! After all, you never know if the AI wants to trade....

I used to think like you until I tried the OCC at Regent level.
Every time I have played it I have never had more than 2 resources and usually had only one.
I found it not too difficult to get all the resources I needed thru trade.

I also discovered that you do not need a resource to complete a unit or improvement only to start it.

In other non-OCC games I have sometimes been without a vital resource say saltpetre. If this is the case I would trade for it,
make all my upgrades and start producing many calvalry and musketmen and then let the trade lapse after 20 turns.

I have also taken a far off city which had oil, created a new city near by with a settler brought over for the purpose, immediately built a harbour in the new city with cash , started building infantry in most of my home contient cities and then lost the far off cities and their oil.

right, but don't forget in a OCC it is quite easy to trade for res and lux because the AI calculates the value it has for you. more cities = more expensive

I always play on Huge maps, so its usually impossible, or at least extremely difficult, to get a monopoly on all resourcs.

True Resources cost more but you have more to trade.

After afew games of OCC I tried OCC strategies on a larger civ and they work very well. For me now the easiest win is to use the OCC stategies of peace love and trade with a civ of 8-10 cities to get a cultural or UN win. The main problem was that it proved to be a bit dull.
