I have always loved MOO2. I picked up my first copy in Germany in about 1998, and played the German version for several years before I finally bought a copy in English. I tried MOO1 later, but it just wasn't the same. And I found MOO3 to be a huge disappointment. I can't honestly even say that I remember why, I just know that it was. MOO2 was my main, go-to game from 1998 until probably 2005 or so, when I picked up C3C and SMAC. By the time I got tired of C3C, I'd moved on to a computer that would no longer run MOO2. So I haven't played it since about '05 . . . . until a couple of weeks ago, when I found a site that would let me play online!
Now, I have to admit that despite all of the time I spent with MOO2, I wasn't what you'd call a great player. Yes, I played and won on Impossible, but it usually meant I played a custom race and cherry-picked my start. Playing at Impossible (or Sid in C3C) always required way too much long-term attention to detail and numbers than was enjoyable for me. At that level, I kind of feel like I'm playing an Excel spreadsheet rather than galactic conquest. But that's neither here nor there. My favorite MOO2 games were always Hard level, huge galaxies, and custom races. I want that epic, large-scale feel to galactic conquest. Yes, I'm aware that some of the customs (like UniTol) wind up ridiculously over-powered, but I find myself bored with most of the stock races. I use the custom races, but try not to abuse them.
When I discovered MOO2 online a few weeks ago, I promptly fired it up, named my home system Aabraxa (like I've done for ~25 years), and set my empire on a path to mirved merculite missiles. It was good to be home.
Y'all have a good day!
