More early barbarian events with 3.13?

Since I've patched BTS, in about half a dozen starts, I've had TWO that have had a barbarian uprising event that produces 4 archers outside of my capitol in the extreme early stages of the game, e.g., when I have only built either 1 or 2 warriors, have not yet had a chance to research bronzeworking much less find bronze, and wouldn't even have had enough population in the capitol (size 2 or 3) to whip an extra defender anyway. So yeah, you guessed it, immediate humiliating defeat five minutes into the game, because one warriior in a capitol with no cultural defenses yet just can't stand up to 4 archers! What is with this??? I never had this happen so early before the patch. Am I just horribly unlucky, or did the patch implement an "improvement" that the game could have done without?

I've not had that bad luck but I lost my 2nd city because of that. Played on monarch level. I got 4 swordsman while I hadn't a metal yet.

Recently had 4 swordsmen spawn before I had ironworking (I had bronze, but not connected). Whipping my cities to fortify, the swordsmen actually marched all the way through my lands, avoided MY stuff, and instead killed Isabella out of the game (she was south of me). The net result was me later capturing a Madrid with Oracle that was barbarian difficulty. Go figure. Prince difficulty.

you are probably horribly unlucky. it hasn't happened to me once.

on the other hand, I seem to get very few random events at all, and especially Quests. I know the types of events are partially determined by what style of game one is playing, and I'm sure I am not mixing up my play style enough to experience everything yet.

but the frequency and variety truly seems to be all over the place. they really got the "random" part right!

Before the patch I had the swordsmen spawn, but not until after I had axemen to deal with them. I guess I had assumed that these events couldn't be triggered until regular barbarians were triggered, which doesn't happen until (some or maybe all?) civs have a second city. But maybe there has been this "sudden death" possibility all along.

I must just be tragically unlucky lately...

was isabella leading in score?? in the event log, it says "atilla the hun is leading a barbarian uprising against civilazation" or something like that... maybe they are program to attack the leader in score.

maybe you were leading so they appeared near your territory, and before they attack, isabella took the lead so they went after her..... or maybe they just hate that religious psycho...

I have had two events in which four barbarian spearmen were spawned, very early. The stacks appear about four spaces from my city. One stack just took out my capitol. I had two cities and two or three warriors out hunting villages. Did not have BW so could not whip. I am ready to turn off random events. Can anyone direct me to how to turn them off?

I've had swordsmen spawn before I discovered iron or copper, both before or after the patch. I didn't appreciate it.

I also had horse archers spawn next to a city that had phalanxes in it. The horse archers didn't last very long.

Since 3.13 my new tactic is the rush to Great Wall. Usually mining, masonry, BW, then Chop for the wall. Faster if I start with mining. I like playing with Barbarians, and try to use aggressive Barbs, so GW is not longer optional for me. It keeps the other Civ's busy for a bit, while I get my foundation started and on the right path. I have had many games where I get the random Barb events, and usually it's Barbarian axeman in a stack of about 7 or so. I am playing on Marathon with Huge maps, and 12 or so AI. :viking:

Ever tried "no barbarians" on a custom game? Sorry, just a thought!

If I want barbs, I like to have more of them - especially when playing a charismatic leader. Perhaps the way of 3.13 is what the developers intended. Earlier, unless playing with Raging Barbs on, they were pretty scarce. Fancy a quiet game - just turn them off :)

I'm not sure if turning off the barbarians actually makes the barbarian "event" that spawns the 4 near your doorstep go away--I think you'd have to turn off random events to get rid of that. (And I usually enjoy the random event stuff. Once, late in the game, my civ got a random event that one of my citizens invented the Civ game...)

As for regular barbarians, I don't find them to be much trouble just set at regular--good for getting the early troops some experience.

Prob right about random events. What I really hate is walking into an area I've
just explored with my settler and warrior only to find that the barbs have already got a city there.
