when you are teching quite well but your military is not as big as your opponents (which happens to me quite often with the way i play) you are very likely to become a target for your enemies as soon as you start building the space ship. the very best defense in that case is to nuke the enormous SOD AI generates in BTS and finish off with your elite tanks/marines.
now the question. if it is strictly a defensive war (i know, you can't nuke friendly territories so it's not "strictly defensive") why every civ in the world hate me for nuking their friends if I'm just defending my country and nukes are my only hope of survival? shouldn't the effect be limited to aggressive war?
soon after I get all the world to hate me and destroy me as soon as they get their own nukes:/

Nuking someone's friend is never going to go down well, even if they started the war. I don't think you can logically claim that they'll ignore it just because you weren't the one to declare.

In my opinion its very generous that you don't get diplomatic penalties with all civs for using nukes - it does after all cause damage to the entire planet in the form of global warming. I can't see any civ being that pleased about that.
