I wanted to restart the thread on UU's for the civs. The history behind the UU ideas rocks! But I hope it ends up well organised and such...

Basically, what UU's should a civ have instead of its official one, or what if a civ had 2 UU's? (added backgriund history and actual in-game difference, such as what unit it replaces, would be great)

I think Germany ought to have U-boats, they were an extreme threat in the war, forcing America to choose between using convoys to protect either troop ships or cargo ships (they chose to protect their young men).

British Spitfires might work, since RAF managed to fend off a much larger Lutwaffe. Luckily Britian isn't connected to main Europe by land, or Panzers would have changed that story. But anyway, air-superiority units tend to suck...

That includes USA's air superiority, isn't well represented by the F-15 in its current form, whereas its Stealth Bombers were a defining factor in Gulf War.

Other obvious options: Chinese Imperial Guard (with those "kuan-to," large-curved-blade spears), British Redcoat (they make easier, unflinching targets - ha!), American Pioneer (2 movement Settler, or else Cowboys/Gunslinger), American Actors/Pro-Wrestlers(um...happiness?).

On a related note, Spy Sattelite would be a nice addition to Sattelites tech, make it a Small Wonder that gives once in a while enemy territory 'scan'.

Check out the LWC mod thread on the Completed Mods forum.

It answers your concerns.

An interesting idea would be to have 1 UU for each civ and a several-civ unique unit. The Americans couls still have their F-15 but they and the British and French could have a suporior destroyer.

About the Indian UU's, The Elephant should come much earlier(instead of the horseman with 4/1/2)and in the later game, the politician( he adds money to your treasury, but don't ask him how!!;)

Not only should there be more UU's, there need to be a lot more units.

For example, the bayonet-armed musketmen of about 1805 were a lot more potent offensively than those armed with slower firing muskets from 1600 that had no bayonets.

The German Assault Troops of 1917-18 were very good offensively; in Civ III we have to wait for the tank for a really good attack unit.

There should be steel warships after ironclads and before destroyers.

And so on.

What Civ III gave us was a very simplistic limited bunch of units.

But still a much better selection and types of resources needed than RTS games like Starcraft or RA. Civ3 rules in its application of growth, trade and diplomacy, as well as lots and lots of management.

re: post iron clad

perhaps something along the lines of the "leviathan" battleships
of the very early twenty century and maybe the big feature
is that they could carry a unit

Does anybody remember the story about Pres. Teddy Rosevelt
pressuring congress to vote more money for his navy by sending the great white fleet half way around the world and having them run out of gas (coal?):D
