been a problem of this laptop for ever.. it can just suddenly freeze up. If i hit the mouse/keys it sometimes comes back to life if not i have to press the shutdown button.. it then springs back to life and asks if i want to shut down (of course i say no)

I can also shut the laptop so that the screen is triggered off.. this sorts it also

WTF is going on?!? Got told this could be a motherboard fault.. any ideas?

    Fresh windos installtion no help
    new HD no help
    new RAM no help

Hmm, what exactly is on the laptop? Maybe there is a program overloading the processor making the computer freeze up at times.

What kind of laptop you have? Does it run hot? Overheating related lockups?

it is probably because of the battery; try connecting the laptop to power without battery. it should work

    - from a clean install of windows
    - as soon as it is switched on so no heat
    - I'll try the battery thing.

Maybe faulty hardware, get it checked out at a PC shop.
