Mounted units getting bonuses on defense?

Let me preface this by saying I assume this is not a feature - the in game tips and promos seem to suggest that as with vanilla mounted should not get the benefit from promotions on defense, and yet:

The tooltip says "no defensive terrain bonuses." It specifically means units with that penalty don't get the rough terrain defense bonus (+15% on hills/forests). I know that's somewhat misleading - it confused me too at first, but the effect is part of the vanilla game core we can't change with mods. We can change the tooltip, however. Can you think of a short phrase that gets this concept across?

"No rough terrain bonus" seems fitting to me.

What of Open Terrain? Does a mounted/armored unit suffer from defending in the open?

That screenshot shows the 20% defense modifier for a mounted unit in open terrain (green text on right side).
