I am currently playing a 16 civ game (huge, pangea, regeant level) where I randomly selected my starting empire. Turns out I was the Iroquois. I was a little upset at first, but decided to play anyway.

The mounted warrior has proved to be an amazing unit. Its mobility combined with its 3 in attack allowed me to quickly roll over all my neighbors. I took so many cities early in the game that I was able to compete technologically with my rivals even when my government was a monarchy.

At my height, I had around 100 mounted warriors (which are now all safely upgraded to cavalry).

Now, it is the start of the 16th century and my score is over 3000. My nearest competitor has a score of 700.

Domination will come soon!

I agree. I am playing a game as Iroquois on Monarch difficulty, 8 players, standard size world. I got a patch of land on a crowded continent with Romans to the West, English to the North, Germans to the Southeast, plus Russians and Persians to the far west. A recipe for being crushed for many civs, but not Iroquois.

I built about 13 cities, mostly close in, or on scraps of poor land, and then an attack force of about 20 mounted warriors and a couple of catapults. I prepare for war with the weaker Romans, but they give me a couple of techs at a good price, so I turn to the English which are strong (rank 2 of 8).

The English refuse my demands for tech, so I attack. I bribe the Romans and Germans (1 gold per turn), hoping they do not ally against me. The English enlist the Russians and Persians, but they are far away and do not worry me. No one will ally with me, until the first English city falls (three or four turns in), then the Romans joined on my side at a huge price (8 gold per turn plus World map). After another English city falls, the Romans enlist the Germans on my side and the English are utterly crushed by three civs.

The mounted warriors traverse Roman lands to get to the Russians and crush them in short order. I may or may not continue the game, as the "fun" part of the first war is over.

The Iroquois are one of the best rushing civs, and slave camps are not necessary (just build the early cities very close in).

Yes they certainly do rock, almost to the point of imbalance. A 3 attack unit with 2 movement that you can get very early on. The one drawback if any, is the very early golden age.

I find that beating deity on civ3 is easiest with Iriquois. Just use tiny or small map and pangea. You can simply roll over your opponents quickly.

Be sure they have Zones of Control. I checked in Editor after the patch and they, and horsemen, did NOT have ZoC.

Iroquois have my favorite color, BTW.

Playing the Iroqois right now! I have an ARMY of mounted warriors - MWWAAAHAAAHAAAAHAAAA oh yes, the path of destruction is sweet.
