Move the Altered maps thread

A suggestion, wouldnt the interesting Altered maps thread better belong to the World History forum? Afterall the vast majority of the "altered" maps are just maps of various different information about countries.

But does anyone really even want them there? And most of the maps are something random, instead of history or alternate history.

What do the Altered Maps threads actually discuss? Is it politics? What-if scenarios of other possible outcomes to major historical events? I know that Plotinus doesn't like alternate history threads, but I think they are valid topics and deserve a place somewhere.

Many would content that OT has the highest level of discourse of any section on CFC.

Don't move the altered maps thread. It may be history and alternate history in parts, but only in parts; it is really very much along the lines of the other OT picture threads in the style of its discussion, and it serves as a platform for political satire much of the time, which is very much OT and by no means World History.

I'd say it's more about future than history. If the map is historical then it isn't altered, is it?

In fact it would fit better in Other games considering all the screenshots of various games poeple have been playing.

We do use altered maps from time-to-time in History when discussing what-if scenarios. I'm pretty sure I've used one I stole off Google Images when discussing Rommel's attacks in North Africa. I don't think there's much point moving the thread to History though, considering the fact that not all the maps are actually althistorical, and many of them don't have any discussion involved.

I think Plotinus is like myself when it comes to althistory; he's fine with it so long as it's a minor departure that's asking a legitimate question. Example; What would have happened if Hitler had left the bunker ahead of time? The answer would be not much, but it's something that could have happened and is a legitimate question, especially for someone with little knowledge of WWII. A question like; What would have happened if Hitler and Eva Braun got married in 1942 instead of 1945? is pretty much meaningless, but harmless. Then there are the gems like; What if Alexander invaded China? Well, um, he couldn't ever have done it, so any discussion of it is meaningless and annoying. It's certainly not history. I don't think any of the History regulars appreciate those threads, even someone like Dachs who actually writes althistory.

Well, considering that I once started writing a crossover story where Xena meets the Sliders in California (California is Greek because Alexander not only got to China - he got all the way to North America!)... you can tell that I enjoy alternate history (as long as it's not a dry discussion of troop movements; I prefer to consider the sociological effects of a changed or different history as well).

BTW, my above-mentioned story? Not meant to be serious in the least. Since I have trouble writing serious fiction, I didn't even try with this - I went strictly for the comedy.

It has nothing to do with history, it fits the spectrum of picture threads as with the rest of the off topic, and its participants are people who visit the off topic. If you do not want to mingle with your fellow community members in the off topic, you are free to visit another forum.

In addition, the altered maps thread is more than alternate history, but various other types of maps as well, such as maps of rankings of health care and the number of letters of the country's name in English.

Completely irrelevant to history or alternate history, perfectly within reason as part of the off-topic and in the context of this thread. It's a miscellaneous map thread, it's what we OTers enjoy, and it makes no sense to move it.

So it's a more intellectual sort of picture thread that covers a variety of disciplines and topics, one of which happens to be alternate history (a favorite of several people here). Do I have it right?

If so, I will support this thread staying in OT.
