Maybe an interesting thread for the people that love this game, but also love the history of the civilisations and their leaders.

Yesterday I saw the movie "Mongol" ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416044/ ) which is about the life of Temujin (later Ghengis Khan).
Truely an beautiful epic movie which I can recommend to everyone. Specially if you love history, but also if that's not your interest. (Its spoken in Mongol language, wow!)
I have a love for this kind of movies, but imo there are way too few.

I can only come up with Alexander and Elizabeth of which for some reason I haven't seen Alexander yet, but I certainly will allthough I've heard of it's flaws.
And I found Elizabeth, the golden age to be mostly a drama. Imo a bit dissapointing.
I haven't seen the Elizabeth from 1998.

Anyways if anyone know more movies based on historical civilisations and leaders please post them. Coz I'd love to see them :)

-Elizabeth http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127536/
-Elizabeth, The Golden Age http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414055/
-Alexander http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0346491/

Oooh! I saw Mongol, great movie! Its the first part in a three part series. The only other movie I've heard about that I can think of the top of my head is Zulu, made in the sixties its exactly what you think its about. Other than that I can't think of any.

Well Kingdom of Heaven has Saladin in it, even it's not about him per se. Good movie. It follows history kind of roughly though. For entertainment only, not education. :)

Well it isn't a moive, but Saladin is getting his own TV show in the middle East, Saudi Arabia I think.

There's a Abe Lincoln movie coming out in 2011 starring Liam Neeson.

There's also a Hannibal movie coming out in 2011 starring Vin Diesel.

Boudica already exists (2003 starring Alex Kingston)

There must be a number of movies about Mao and Stalin.

Napoleon has had several movies about him

The Nazis made a movie of Bismarck

Obviously there's that Gandhi movie that won a whole bunch of Oscars

There's a Sitting Bull movie as well

There are a few about Julius Caesar

^ LOL, he's also the director. I hope he does a much better job directing than he does acting.

Thumbs up on the 1998 Elizabeth movie. It balances in foreign politics, government management, and the threat of war very well into the standard drama of her life.

Mrs. Brown with Dame Judy Dench and Billy Connolly was about Victoria.

Sparticus has Augustus in it, I think.

In 1999 there was a 2 part Television movie on ABC about Cleopatra and Julius Ceasar. I think it was Called Cleopatra. It told the story of her affair with Ceasar and then Marcus Antony and how she made a last attempt to seduce Octavian/Augustus and he wasn't having any of it.

Kingom of Heaven is one of my favorites.

I love these kinds of movies.

I just saw a movie recently about China's first Emperor, Qin Sung that was pretty good.

Does Leaders made from the folks doing Creation and Customization count? Cuz if so Ronald Reagan was in a whole bunch of movies. :p

I don't think that Augustus is in Spartacus. Crassus (played by Lawrence Olivier) is the guy that crushes the rebellion, there's a young Julius Caesar, and Pompey is mentioned too. Augustus was probably not even born by the time of Spartacus' rebellion.

Shaka Zulu was a movie or miniseries (I forget which).

There was a very good series of tv movies on Stalin that starred Robert de Niro as the Man of Steel. EDIT: Robert Duvall, not de Niro.

There was a mini-series on Peter The Great; I don't remember who played him, though, and I'm not interested enough to google it. EDIT: Okay, I googled it, it was Maximillian Schell.

Barry Bostwick played Washington in a couple of mini-series.

There was a pretty good Lincoln movie that starred Henry Fonda.

I would imagine that Elizabeth has had the highest number of movies made about her.

I'm still disapointed that no one has made a good main stream movie about George Washington or Constantine I The Great. Those guys are 2 of my favorite characters in history!

(The Patriot came close, but had nothing to do with Washington).

You look back at history and there are just so many great stories and action to be had from it. You would think Hollywood would be cashing in alot more on that.

In the mid-90s there was a Catherine the Great film starring Catherine Zeta Jones, and there's another one from the '20s that they used to show on PBS when I was a kid that had Douglas Fairbanks (not playing Catherine, obviously). :)

The Barry Bostwick George Washington mini-series wasn't bad, and it had Jaclyn Smith (one of the hottest women of all time). :)

EDIT: Sorry I misread your post; thought you said Catherine instead of Constantine. My bad.

CZJ as Catherine, wow, I must watch that ;)

Although she used to have a welsh accent and now has a dodgy american one so I don't think her Rooskie accent would be very good.

At least she doesn't have some horrid Scouser accent. :D

Neither do I :)

EDIT: Just a generic Northern English one, Lancashire.

EDIT2: I like Welsh accents anyway. CZJ and Charlotte Church (even though she is a drunk) are the best exports ever from Wales.

This is what I think of when I think of Welsh accents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGOfcWIhGDk :D

Hey, Paradigm, I've got a thread in off-topic where I'm taking tips for my upcoming trip to Scotland. Feel free to post.

Now, enough with the spam (sorry) and back to the movies. :mischief:

I saw that, I'm half scottish, haven't been for about 20 years though, I recommend: the pub.

I can't listen to the youtube bcos I don't have a working soundcard :(

Back to the OP, I saw Alexander and I thought it was so aweful that I completely forgot about it. Honestly I don't think it seemed very historicly accurate and it seemed like Oliver Stone used it to take some liberties and try and make some kind of political statement about a few issues that were big that election year. (Is it just me or is all of his films politically driven?) That and Colin Farrell was horrible. Even Brad Pitt blew him out of the water when it comes to playing an actual historical character. (And I was disgusted at the previews of seeing Brad Pitt in a Bronze age movie. But now I give Credit to Pitt; he's a pretty good actor.)
