Movies depicting History

But reasonably accurate besides that? After all, in a movie about the latter days of Nazi Germany, you're going to have to sanitize a few things, and humanise people. After all, there wasn't a great deal of humanity in the vast majority of them.

They were all perfectly human. It's just that "human" doesn't mean "good".

You know how I was using the term, Plotty my boy. I am totally calling you Plotty from now on. I meant humanity and humanise in the, uhh, humanist sense.

The Longest Day, Zulu, A Night to Remember, The Battle of Algiers, Flags of Our Fathers, and Letters From Iwo Jima are all very accurate.

Why do we expect movies to be history lessons? I watch movies to be entertained. If I want the real history I'll read a book.

Zulu, accurate? Zulu is horrendously inaccurate. Awesome, yes, but it's very inaccurate. No Braveheart, but still...

No one is able to be a cold (censorship) all the time. I found it pretty realistic.

Good for you.

Some time ago I resaw The Longest Day and it was just hopelessly dated - notwithstanding historical accuracy of events.

On the subject of war films, has anyone seen Downfall? That's the one about the last days of WWII, isn't it? Accurate? Entertaining? The German version of Hollywood crap? I've been wanting to see it for a while.
I suppose that's the translation of Der Untergang, which I found, somewhat unexpectedly, to be quite a good movie and a fair depiction of the final days of the Third Reich.

How about Das Boot? It is fiction, but as far as I know about as accurate a depiction of life and death on board a U Boat that one can find. Plus it's a fantastic movie. If you have never seen it find a copy. Anybody who loves history will find it riviting.
