Moving land units across water- how make less annoying?

I miss transports to move armies across water. "Rapid deployment" is a joke because you need not just an airstrip but a full airport on target side for that to work. It just not worth the time and expense. Thus, I give up on won games in finishing the job because it takes over 10 turns, or more, to get from one continent to another.

Lately I've been wondering where the movement of land units when on water is set. I don't even know for sure what it's called, so can't drill down and see if it can be changed. However I have noted that some/all? land units lose movement tiles when change from land tiles to ocean tiles.

So, questions:
1-- what is this characteristic of civ called?
2-- what is your method of avoiding this frustration and game abort decision.

The Civ6 (and Civ5) term for this is "embarking" units. After researching a certain tech, land units may drop into the water, suddenly occupy boats, and they swim to their destination. In the first 2/3 ages when they can swim, yes, they only travel 2 hexes per turn. After researching certain techs, e.g., square rigging, steam power, combustion, the embarked units move more hexes per turn.

On a continents map, moving your invasion force to the other land mass can be very tedious. Once they have arrived and you conquered some cities, you can upgrade them *over there*. Cash-purchasing reinforcements might be faster than shipping/embarking them from home.

On an archipelago map, I don't have a good answer.

The setting for embarked units is set under adjust embarked movement. Don't know where embarked is set initially.

Still don't know where set at first, but can change embarked movement from square rigging tech. Now to see how it plays out. thank you for the leads.

My first guess would be "Shipbuilding", which allows all land units to embark. Another guess would be "Sailing," which allows builders to embark and improve water resources. I would check Shipbuilding first.

Good guess, but didn't find. It could be in sql or hard coded in compiled code. With square rigging, I have a work around and it really helps get rid of the feeling that this just takes too long to cross the seas.
