I've looked around the forums, but I didn't really see anything that addresses MP etiquette for CivRev, so I thought I'd start a thread.

I'm new to the Civilization universe, and my only other foray into Sid Meier games was Pirates!, which I also really liked.

I had an MP game last night and, during the first few turns, I came across a group of Settlers that were free-ranging without any kind of escort. I captured and settled them, and then immediately saw two of the MP players "leave" the game. So my question is this: is there some unwritten rule that no one should attack or capture another MP player's settlers at the start of a game? Did I break some unspoken cardinal rule of MP gaming in CivRiv when I captured those settlers?

Expanding on this, are there any rules of MP CivRev etiquette that I should be aware of?

Haven't played much MP at all, but here's my take: the aim of a multiplayer game should be to win, by any means possible. Giving quarter to the enemy makes the game less fun for both sides. What I suspect happened there was that someone was careless and realized after you captured those settlers that they'd lost this game. Maybe they were playing with a friend who then left with them.

There are borderline questions here, as in: if you know of an exploit, should you abuse it to win? The answer to that would be no, but... there are no unwritten rules. Communication is important, so even if you have just a ****** bluetooth headset like me, try at least to agree on the rules when starting the game. For instance, the fact that Civ Rev only allows simultaneous turns annoys me somewhat (often whoever moves first has a marked advantage). There might be a gentleman's agreement to get around that; say that in a 2 player game, the players take turns moving their army first and the other player only moves his army when the first player pressed end turn (at which point you still have ROUNDTIMER time to do what you need to do).

For Ranked matches, it's savage. You'll always get people rushing, and stealing things. In ranked match, all you're trying to do is win, so do just that; win.

For Player Matches, I follow my own little unwritten rules. If someone has a headset, I tell them it. I never rush in player matches, the point is to have fun, or prepare for Ranked Matches. In player matches, I never attack an enemy city early on unless it's undefended. I never capture settlers, unless it's undefended.

My rules pretty much follow the same thing; if you play stupid, I'll screw you over.
