Multiplayer / Editing Tools + new Video (Gamespot, September, 10th)

lots of nice new info.
*Great Generals can produce Golden Ages
*World builder can be accessed in-game or out
*mods can be set to exclude other mods.
...

Thanks for the link krunsh, definitely worth reading

Love this quote...We then prepared ourselves to do battle in a four-man multiplayer match with several Firaxis staffers, including lead designer Jon Shafer, who, for the record, is a bloodthirsty monster and is not to be trusted in a Civ V multiplayer session .

Thanks for that. Persia does seem pretty powerful. Crank out some UUs and get Great Generals to get Golden Ages and smash face even more, getting more and more Great Generals.

Sounds like fun. :D

so we have the huge map size: 128 x 80

Which is exactly like "huge" was in civ4! ;) Great! So we almost surely know that game speeds and map sizes are unchanged.

@stealth: If you want bigger maps, it might be VERY easy to mod. But what makes you thing you've seen something larger? Terra was larger in Civ4, BTW.

The toolset seems very powerful this time around, too. finally, we can create (and hopefully refresh) maps inside the toolset, which was really lacking in civ4.

As it turns out, you can set Civ V's mods to work directly with other mods (or to be exclusive of other mods),
I did not read about that before; basically, would that mean that it is a kind of extension of the modules system of CIV ? you could have a mod "spain civilization", and then another mod using the spain civ in the first mod ?

The map editor looks nice... it makes sense that it would look like Strategic View. I am still a bit dissapointed on two fronts. First, the map size is not that big. With the changes to game mechanics, this game needs larger maps. For me, this is another hit against 1UPT!

Second, it was not too clear, but apparantly, editing files will again be left to scouring through lines of XML and changing each little entry 1000 times. Why don't they like GUI editors! I am beginning to think that they hate non-programmers!

I can't agree. While I'm still pretty sure that larger than "huge" maps will be a 5 minute mod (and limited rather by the hardware demand), you should try 1upt first.

I firmly believe that a certain map size destroys the strategic value of 1upt, because flanking becomes too easy.

I'm a fan of huge maps, too, and played huge PW2 script maps, which are even larger than huge terra maps (20civs). But I have to admit, while this gives a certain cool flavor to the game, some problems appear. for a very long time through the game, combat is just useless, because there's enough land left. Furthermore, half of the civs had no impact on my game whatsoever, I never had any business or war with them.

:( No gigantic map? like 256 x 160?

There was no such map in civ 4, either. Even modders hesitated to make maps of this size, and if, they gave instructions how to make it playable on average machines.

War isn't just for land grabbing. As far as 1UPT goes, the game is going to get pretty cramped on such a small map!

I don't agree. Everything we have seen so far points to towards smaller Empires and Armies. I think that will mitigate the cramped effect as you would have if it were 1UPT with armies and empire as large as in Civ IV.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating; 11 more days :)

Probably something to do with memory addressing. They still need to support 32-bit PC's which are limited to 2GB addressable memory by one app (3GB if you fiddle with your boot settings).

I think IF (and I mean a hopeful IF) they release a 64-bit version we will see much bigger maps (64-bit has a ginormous addressable memory size).

If people wanted to, they could load Civ IV up, and make a random map with one of the mapscripts that allow Larger maps, then convert it with the new map making program, correct? Or even just convert it, erase it, then start from scratch. Or do you suppose the program is hard set in limits, so it would bring up an error, or not allow it?

So the huge map size would be over 6 times the viewable map in this screenshot. That's pretty hefty. Presumably, this shows a view of asia in the Asia map pack. The brush option for continent type with a choice of Americas is interesting.
