So you don't run into a similar problem again, I highly suggest adding a second partition to your hard drive before reinstalling your OS. Use a program called fdisk. If you have no clue what to do, forget it, it can only get confusing. (if you're really interested just type "fdisk" into google and you'll find a tutorial on it.)

Yeah, that's the plan. The recovery disk failed and HP tech support did nothing. At this point I'm looking into what drivers I need to back up before putting a new OS on it. It's not my computer though, and so the final decision is out of my hands.
