Mump5 - AWD Standard Pangaea - take 2

I just played 50 turns off start #1, and I have to say: Wow!

I haven't met a single contact yet.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with this start. There's a lot of jungle to the N/NE of our capital, but the rest of our lands look pretty good. We have a source of ivory that can be hooked up soon.

OTOH, I'm not sure my gameplay was as focused as it could have been. I wasn't quite sure what to do with techs, so I researched BW, WC, Masonry, and then started on Math. In hindsight, I think I should have beelined for IW or HBR - and certainly skipped WC when I found the Ivory. I should've hooked that up by now, too

Still, I think we're in good shape so far. We could use a couple more workers and a prebuild for the SoZ - I'd lean towards putting it in Grand River to avoid keeping Salamanca or Niagara Falls tied up with a prebuild, but we'll probably lose the race if we build it there. Building it in one of the other two cities won't let us use the cows optimally, but we'll have a better chance of getting the wonder.

Other than that, we'll need to find some iron and horses soon.

lurker's comment: There is one radical solution to heavy jungle, I have never really tried though. Every time a settler builds a town, it clears the tile under it. With 3 cows, many settlers can be built. Ordinary circumstances would just require building lots of workers, but in AW, you need that unit support for military units. Using settlers to clear jungle by building and abandoning towns is wasteful, but it wouldn't require 16 turns per worker per tile and that associated unit support. I suppose experiments don't belong in active SG's, so I wouldn't blame anyone for not trying it. It's just an idea I've played around with.

lurker's comment: Now if those swordsmen would just chop jungle.....

Sorry folks, Washing Machine blew up last night, didn't get done with my personal crap last night until about 8-9 and was too exhausted to get involved. I will play tonight, any thing else to consider before I run?

SoZ prebuild in Allegheny maybe?

Someone pick this up, I can't find my Civ III disc. This is what I get for trying to get organized before a move, now I can't find anything.

0) 1750BC
Lux up to 30% to avoid riot in Niagara Falls, switched to prebuild. Grand River switched to settler.

IT
Salamanca: Worker > Granary

1) 1725BC
Tiles switched and lux can go down to 20%.

IT
Nothing

2) 1700BC
Nothing

IT
A red warrior appears from the north.

3) 1675BC
The Babylonians are our first foe. They're up everything; 8 cities, no gold, no luxes.

IT
Grand River: Settler > Barracks

Tenochtitlan finishes the Pyramids.

4) 1650BC
Niagara Falls has grown so lux back up to 30%. Ivory will be roaded soon.

IT
Persepolis finishes the Oracle. Babylonians start ToA.

5) 1625BC
Move the settler west. A barbarian is on the way so this will be a bit tricky.

IT
The barbarian foolishly attacks our settler escort spear and dies.

6) 1600BC
Ivory is connected. Lux down to 20%.

IT
A second Babylonian warrior shows up from about the same direction.

7) 1575BC
Found Oil Springs, start walls.

IT
Salamanca: Granary > Spearman

8) 1550BC
Shift units to cover against barbarians. Salamanca will get to 10spt just in time to start producing our defense against to Babs.

IT
A barbarian galley blocks Niagara Falls's fish and it riots

Cattaraugus: Worker > Barracks

9) 1525BC
Lux back up to 30%.

IT
A barbarian warrior dies on our ivory covering rWarrior.

Salamanca: Spearman > Spearman
Allegheny: Barracks > Spearman

10) 1500BC
Lux down to 20% again. vWarrior barely kills a barbarian cHorse, which allows some shuffling to make sure against the 2 Bab warriors that are poised to attack Salamanca.

IT
The Bab warriors decide to go for our worker...

11) 1475BC
Our worker runs... Cattaraugus could fall.

IT
The Babylonians move further into our territory.

Salamanca: Spearman > Archer

12) 1450BC
Lux up to 30% again.

IT
Those warriors are really annoying. Canton finishes the Colossus.

13) 1425BC
Just moving units to anticipate; expose a worker again to road to Cattaraugus, maybe the warriors will turn back.

IT
A barbarian dies at Salamanca, the Bab warriors move on to Grand River.

Salamanca: Archer > Archer

14) 1400BC
vArcher redlines but kills rWarrior. Now I'm glad our towns are CxC, I can move in an extra vWarrior and fortify, so Grand River is safe. [1-0]

IT
The remaining Bab warriors both turn around, I'm guessing towards empty Cattaraugus (I had to cover workers).

15) 1375BC
No combat, next turn some important roads will be in place, and we'll finally be on top of things.

IT
Babs move as expected.

Salamanca: Archer > Spearman
Allegheny: Spearman > Spearman

16) 1350BC
vArcher barely kills cWarrior. [2-0]

IT
A green warrior shows up, also from the north.

Mathematics is in, start on the Wheel.

Oil Springs: Walls > Catapult

17) 1325BC
The green cWarrior is Persian. They have only 8 towns in all, and incense.

IT
A barb horse to our north wins against someone on defense :)

Salamanca: Spearman > Worker

18) 1300BC
vArcher barely wins against the last Bab rWarrior. [/b][3-0][/b]

IT
:aargh: I missed a barb horseman who takes a worker in the south :wallbash:. The barb horse up north dies against a dark green archer.

Salamanca: Worker > Worker

Babylon finishes ToA

19) 1275BC
Meet the Aztecs. They have 3 luxes and 12 towns. A vWarrior kills the stupid barb horse and promotes.

IT
Salamanca: Worker > Worker

The Persians start the GL, so we can forget about that. Actually, Beijing finishes it. Aztecs start HG. Kyoto finishes MoM.

20) 1250BC
Just some MM and worker covering.

Notes:
  • Keep Salamanca on 10spt. It can grow every 3 turns. It should produce lots of workers, quite a few settlers and some military. It can probably do that at smaller sizes too, but I think it's better to keep it kinda big.
  • First settling spot should be 1N of the dyes. Second settling spot should be on the southern river (just visible in the screenshot), 2S of the ivory, to bring irrigation to our plains.
  • We'll need walls in Cattaraugus, then a nice mix of cats and spears. I'd stop building archers.
  • We should start some rapid expansion now. With ACav coming up, we should be able to hold. I think the lack of normal initial rush from the Babs may be due to wars, which would also account for the long period without contact. I would also gamble that there's little to our south.
