Has anyone specifically targeted a great person for assassination during a game? I think I have inadvertently killed a great priest or two storming a city, but the other day I had the chance to actually target and kill a GP for "strategic" purposes.

Here I am (Bizmark) with a slight tech lead, 3rd in size with "friendly" Cyrus on two different "open" borders. I have the greatest number of soldiers (barely) and my neighbor Cyrus has a defensive pact with Kubla Khan (Cyrus and KK are #2 and 3 in tech and armies).

I am in the process of builing up to attack Cyrus since he has coal and I don't, although I am not ready. Then I see this strange unit travelling across my land. I think, "great, someone is about to get a bank check from trading with one of my big cities. I zoom in to get a better look, and it's Michael Faraday (a great scientist)! Apparently he is going to open an academy in the persian far city.

He never made it.

Alt-Cyrus, Faraday is moved to the edge of our common border, and one cavelry charge later, the quaterback is toast.

I eventually ended up with three of Cyrus' cities (one with coal), razed another and was able to get a substantial army and land boost, while holding off both civs.

This totally reminded me of the assassinations that started World War One, it even had the similar tech (cannon, riflemen and calvelry)

Although it must have been extremely funny and amusing to assasinate this GP, I would just let him pass through to his destination, let him build his academy and then storm the city and take it academy and all...:sniper: :spear:

So to answer your question, no I have never specifically targetted GP's :)

I also murdered a Great Scientist, who made the mistake to walk to close to my border. :ar15:

Mostly for the fun :D: and because i wanted to see how it looks when a GP is killed.:mischief:

I have been unlucky enough to never see an enemy GP but in Civ 3 i use have a force looking for Great Leaders all the time

pity you have to kill them and can't slave them...
My thought exactly. I took a city the other day, which had a great prophet in it. It would have been nice to capture him as well as the city

I took one yesterday and he killed himself. He saw my navy and the capital was close enough to reach and defended by one huge stack, but instead remained in the city.

I have seen mostly great prophets remaining in cities under attack, not many other specialists. The great scientist walking through the territory was just too good to pass up.

A question regarding SpikeSpy's suggestion. Do academies remain in cities that are captured? I haven't deduced what infrastructure remains in a city or not after capture, since some cities have a lot of building left and some don't. A guide or previous thread would help if available.

The great person buildings remain, so yes academies stay in the city. They are classed with wonders and holy shrines which also stay.

If you have intentions of war I wouldn't bother killing scientists, especially if they are on the move as that means only one thing.

AI did that to me once.

I was playing a standard map and one of my border cities was going to get a great artist specialist. So the GP walks down kinda close to the border and midway to its destination Julius declares war and intercepts my guy
