Really I didn't feel as though it is very European sounding. I think a problem with the music is that with some exceptions (eg China, Japan) a lot of the Industrial themes sound too European and lose their individuality. Cultural instruments get drowned out by trumpets and a huge orchestra and they all sound a bit too similar.

I like the Mali music but I think the main theme sounds like two different songs. I love the first half sounds like the music playing if you were riding a horse really fast through the desert. But at 2:45 the track changes and this last half sounds a bit dull and boring.

I agree, and 90% of the Atomic themes are execrable because of those awful synths. But with this theme specifically the Medieval combination of lute, vielle, viola da gamba, etc. would feel write at home in 14th century France.

I think that lute specifically is the kora, which does sound like it would feel at home in 14th century France despite being the Malian representative instrument (alongside the percussion, as with most medieval themes). I do think they could've put more of an effort to add multiple representative instruments for all the medieval themes, instead of sounding like, well, a medieval European ensemble with a soloist on the unique instrument.

For the arrangement of the Medieval theme, I like that they sort of divided it in two parts with the two base songs. The pattern of including a second song right in the middle, as with Macedon, Scotland, and the Maori theme, is really jarring when the rhythm changes as it so often does, and so many themes already do that. The composition of Mali Medieval theme reminded me of the Indonesia Medieval theme in particular.

Will be interesting to hear the various takes on the most well known drinking song in Sweden

I found an English translation if anybody is interested (it's not a literal one though)

    From wikipedia:
    Here's the first
Sing "hup fol-de-rol la la la la"
    Here's the first
    Sing "hup fol-de-rol la la"
He who doesn't drink the first
Shall never, ever quench his thirst
    Here's the first
    [drink]
    Sing "hup fol-de-rol la la"

A more verbatim translation might be:

    The whole goes down
Sing "hup fol-de-rol la la la la"
    The whole goes down
    Sing "hup fol-de-rol la la"
And he who doesn't take the whole
    Doesn't get the half either
    The whole goes down
    [drink]
    Sing "hup fol-de-rol la la"

You will be very drunk by the time you get to the future era.

They chose to make the Swedish soundtrack using the most well-known but banal drinking song there is. Helan går! As a swede I will be amazed if they made something likeable out of that song.

Considering what an amazing job they did with the national anthem in civ5 I'm not too worried. Helan går is quite short too so they are bound to take a lot of liberties in its composition.

And they can mix other songs there. I guess all GS civs have more than one song as the base for later eras versions.

Yeah I suspect they do something cool with it mixing a lot of stuff. Hellan går on repeat would drive people cracy.

I wish they'd done more with mixing the themes of the base game civs. But since they didn't, I've been trying my hand with creating my own theme medleys for some of them.

Honestly, though. If I had to choose, the Swedish soundtrack would probably sound something closer to this, at least in the late game:

If I had to choose one song for Sweden's soundtrack it would probably be this one:

And yes I know it's a funeral song, still beautiful.

A Bellman song would have been the obvious choice, but Firaxis is full of surprises.

Yes, some themes get repetitive and some aren't much different, from the Industrial to the Atomic. But even then mixing up is not guaranteed to make a lot of difference, like Macedon, for example. But mixing different songs is good overall.

People talking about Swedish music... Now I can't stop thinking about Fredman's Epistles, pack of Swedish songs written by Carl Michael Bellman, from EU4. One of them is very... Interesting to hear. Especially when playing as Japan and being in the middle of the war with Ming Dynasty :p

    Sounds very pleasing.

Is it just me or does the Atomic theme sound quite like rock?
