Mutual protection

I managed to conquer all civilizations but Spanish. When, we two only remained, they offered my to sign a mutual protection I agreed, but what on earth is this pact for? Are they afraid of aliens?

This has been discussed before, it means absolutely nothing. The AI values MPPs based on the number of civs remaining. When there is only one civ left besides it, the value of the MPP is nothing.

I've used this tactic myself against the last Civ, to guarantee that that Civ will not attack me while I consolidate and prepare to finish him.

Just make sure you don't break that MPP, or else you will take a reputation hit.

Yes, actually it happened, but I never rely on MPPs. The AI is prone to break it even if there are more civs left.

Exactly. I only use MPPs instead of MAs to avoid the rep/attitude hit (or take a much smaller one).
