My civil engineers don't work!!

I was building a city improvement (mass transit) and I changed some of my specialists to engineers, and it didn't affect the shield production of the city! I also noticed that in the civopedia, it says they can work for wonders too. Is this true? I can't even get them to work on normal city improvements.. :(

IIRC, the shield production isn't shown, but if you look closely, the turns to completion gets shorter. Example: You are producing 8 shields/turn and it says your project is due in 10 turns. You make an engineer, and it still shows 8 shields/turn, but now the project is due in 8 turns, because you are actually producing 10 shields/turn (when building a city improvement, I can't remember if wonders apply or not).

You can hire engineers for improvement or wonder construction.
Doesn't apply to unit construction, though (unless it changed in 1.12).

The number of shields contributed (2 or zero) are displayed on the Civil Engineer and taken account in the build time (but NOT in the build QUEUE). They are not shown on the shield display.

Wouldn't it be better to display the extras shields in the display, like it is done with the extra cash/tubes from scientists/taxmen? Perhaps a suggestion for the next patch.

no because a civil engineer is supposed to represent the better construction techniques, not increased production and you don't get better construction techniques from a factory or power plant

yes I think it should be included in the shield display.

No change in 1.12

The only time this bothers me is when I am looking for a high production city to build wonders in. You can no longer hit f1 and look at shild production. You have to look at shield production and how many "extra" citizens a city has. This is not that big of a deal though.

just for clarification:

Additional engineer spt is not shown directly on city screen, but engineer shields do accumulate in the production box (so no 'discount' on improvements'/wonders' construction time, engineers add 'real' shields).
Switching from an engineer-boosted project to unit construction substracts the formerly contributed engineer shields from the production box (plus, the hired engineer won't show the 2 shields under the specialist icon anymore).
These formerly contributed shields are lost once you switch to unit construction.
E.g.: Order granary (60shields) at 1spt raw, add engineer, total:3spt towards granary. Although city screen says still 1spt, building time display is rightfully 20 turns.
one turn later:
-prod box has 3 shields in it
-switch to warrior: prod box reduced to 1 accumulated shield
-switch back to granary: still 1 shield in prod box
