A space between heaven and hell.
I have been playing CIV since i was 5, three years later i got civ 2, i was pretty ok on both of em'... Now that i play civ3 i cant get anywhere... I play warlord and it is very rare that i am technologically superior, usually im in the 3 weakest civ's group and all my games suck... i havent won a single game in warlord level!!!
Do i suck or what? What am i doing wrong?? im posting a saved game here in hope of getting hints on what to do :(

I usually dont have a problem with the other civ's, and if i fight wars with them, i usually win, after a really long war with several cease fires just to settle down the ppl...

have you tried starting out at a lower level? Civ3 is a little bit harder than previous Civs so it's helpful to learn the game at Chieftan before moving up.

Yeah... ive played chieftain... i win chieftain quite easily... The main problem is that the step from chieftain to warlord is too big in my opinion!!!

hmmm I never really had that problem. Are you building enough cities? Libraries in each of them? Marketplaces are also incredibly important as they provide $$ and a ton of happiness. I view them as my most important city improvements. Try reading through some of the "articles" here:

I think you'll find them to be helpful.

The jump from Chieftain to warlord is the biggest in the game IMHO:mad: I would rather have a more even progression to regent. Warlord is a shock after playing chieftain. But after you master warlord regent isn't so bad

Holy Cow!!
Ok, where to start. First and foremost, you need more workers!!!!!!!
You have 13 cities and only 6 workers. Almost all your citizens are working unimproved tiles. With a Industrious civ I like at least 1 worker per city. Germany is not Industrious. I would have at least 20 workers by now, probably more. Get mines on those shielded grassland (the ones with the gray mark in the middle of the tile) and have the worker road it before he moves to the next tile. Irrigate the wheat so the city grows faster. Granarys help here to. Roads=gold. Gold will let you research faster, as will library's. Thats why you are so far behind. You have no income. I mean 13 cities in 400 A.D. only bringing in 97 gold per turn is pretty sad. (No offense meant)
That's why you are only half way through the Ancient Age. All this goes back to not enough workers.

Take Nuremburg for example. City size of 4 and only 1 tile is improved (and it's only 'half' improved). All 4 citizens are working shielded grassland with no roads on them except one and no mines at all. By not having roads on those 3 tiles that are being worked, you're losing 6 gold per turn right there. By not having mines you're losing out on 4 shields which would get that temple built faster, which will keep them happy and working more tiles as it grows, which gives more gold............................etc.

Another example.....Hamburg.
Right now it's at size 6 and can't get any bigger until you build an aquaduct. Yet it's bringing in 6 extra food but only 2 shields total.
You need to get workers over there to mine that shielded grassland you irrigated and to mine the desert squares for shields. Don't forget to road the tiles too. Get a road on that forest square also so it is pulling in gold when you put someone working it. As you get this done adjust which tiles the citizens are working to get only 12 food but max shields so you can get that aquaduct built.

Building more workers ASAP and improving tiles will help tremendously. You also need a harbor somewhere so you can trade. You are going to need more than 1 luxury. Heck you could use it now.
Just some quick observations. I would be interested in seeing a save later on to see how you did. :)

well... i think ill let this game rest... (this is my MAIN problem, i give up as soon as i see hat everything is up the arse...)
But Matt_G, that was the kind of reply i needed...
and Ny Hoyas second post was also helpful... thank you, i will now go to bed, but i will check here for more brilliant improvments on my strategy tomorrow and start a game with a LOT of more improved tiles :) ...

Ok, here's a brilliant improvement. I like to connect roads between all my cities at th very start.

Any square near a river gives you more food (or more gold, too? Don't remember)... don't underestimate squares with rivers running through them.

Pick a target and kill it over 3 or so wars, starting in the ancient age. Start small to medium sized, then go on to World Conquest. :)

Attack with your Unique Unit to start Golden Age, vastly improving every good thing in your civ. (tech, money, military success?)

Conquer wonders like JS Bach's.

Read the War Academy. :scan:

Hey, thanks for the thread robehans. I too am currently suffering from WS (warlord shock), and as of yet, have tasted nothing more than the bitterest of defeats. Thanks as well to Matt_G, as soon as I return to my current game, I'll check each and every one of my cities to look for the type of problems you mentioned. Here's my question: I have a lot of workers, and I tend to work them in teams of four for instantaneuos (1 turn) improvement to a squre. Is this wise, or would I be better off seperating them, and spreading them across the map?

There's nothing wrong with that IMHO. Especially if there are a lot of unimproved tiles in the immediate area, that are already being worked. Stacking workers will give that mine faster, so you get the extra shield for more turns, or the road faster so your getting more gold sooner............
Of course it will depend on the situation. Say you have 4 workers in a stack working a core city. They get done with that city and you only have a couple of tiles over to the city in the east that need to be worked and a couple of tiles in the city to the west......then I would split them up. Take into account the 'travel time' as well. Keeping them in a stack of 4 may very well cost you more turns than having fewer workers do the job, due to the time spent getting to the tiles.

thank you all, i think ill play a couple chieftain level games just to prove to myself that i can manage with chieftain, then ill start playing warlord with all these new stuff youve told me...

Thank you.
