The AI built the SDI project and now my nukes are getting intercepted. Is this SDI project something I can destroy?

(I was going for time victory just for fun - usually the game would end well before the AI managed to build the SDI project.)

You can destroy the SDI by razing the entire empire to the ground. submarines and missle cruisers full of tactical nukes are your friend, they don't get intercepted (by SDI at least, but fighter interception can be mitigated, SDI can not).

So you're saying a tac nuke fired from a sub doesn't get intercepted? Is the prob of it exploding 100%?

i believe they can be intercepted by fighters, but they have a 50% chance to evade. and of course you can try to target cities with no fighters on patrol if possible, or send a few carriers along and sick your fighters on them first. SDI pretty much kills ICBMs, but tactical nukes can still wreak havoc.
TMIT suggests gifting subs full of nukes to a civ at war with your target civ, apparantly they fire them off for you and you avoid the diplomatic penalty.

i can't wait to try that!

Trust someone else with my prized nukes? NEVER!!!!
:eekdance::nuke::eekdance:

I have actually never tried, but in this thread he makes it sound like a fun and effective strategy.

Nukes can cut 50+ unit stacks to pieces in no time flat. The diplo penalty is a bit unbearable though...but good for taking down a last superpower if it comes to that. There are other options but nukes are pretty effective.

A more common use for nukes is when you're gunning for space and there is a big rival on another continent. If that guy declares on a weaker AI that would vassal, don't allow it. GIFT nukes to that weak AI right next to the big one's stack, and watch the fireworks. The best part is that you get no negative diplo for gifting nukes at all. A pair or trio of tac nukes should maul even the greatest shaka stacks. There goes his power, and any hope for war success!

There's a bit of misinformation in this thread.

Tactical nukes cannot be intercepted by fighters etc. (please correct me if I'm wrong!) but they can be intercepted by SDI. What makes them better than ICBMs though is that they have a 50% chance of avoiding interception from the SDI.

Ordinarly for ICBMs, there is a 75% chance SDI will shoot it down. That's 6 out of every 8 shot down.

For tactical nukes, only half of the 75% will get shot down. That's only 3 out of every 8. In other words, twice as many tactical nukes will make it through than ICBMs. Also, tactical nukes cost half as much and do the same amount of damage as ICBMs.

Unless you really can't find a place to launch tacticals from, being 4 times more effective than ICBMs means they are the superior. :)

So to answer the title of the thread: Your nukes are being intercepted because they're ICBMs and not tacticals. :p

Yes fighters cant intercept nukes, only SDI can.

ICBM are intercepted at 75% but tactical nuke are intercepted at something like 30% and cost half as much as ICBM.

But if ICBM can be launched where you want, tactical can be launched only at 4 square around.

But you can use submarines and missile cruiser to put tactical in and then launch them almost everywhere.

oops, sorry folks, i was misinterpreting my civilopedia. Guess i've also been doing some pointless gyrations with carriers in the very few times i've gone nuke happy.
