Wow!
They’ve done a very nice job on the game. I expected a fresh coat of paint in Civ 6 and that’s not what this is At All!
It’s very clear that a ton of effort went in to making the urban tiles look as good as they do. It must have taken years.
Gameplay wise there’s a lot of bold new changes, and I salute them because at the design level they said…Full Send! Removal of citizens, ages, commanders, progression tracks, etc. there’s so much new.
There are a few things that need immediate attention, however.
First off is cultural victory. It doesn’t even take culture (although it is a fun little mini-game).
But I don’t think it’s possible to stop anyone from getting a cultural victory, and it’s far easier to do than launching. (Capturing the city with the World Fair isn’t practical.)
There is a bit of a damned if they do damned if they don’t with civilians being able to go anywhere. I kinda like being able to scout the whole map and not being locked out of half the artifacts. But I dislike that there’s literally nothing I can do to stop opposing explorers.
A UI improvement to see specialists should also be a high priority.
A UI improvement to see how many moves my unit will have remaining would be super helpful. (Some rough terrain looks very flat.)
The AI needs to defend their cities a little better…although if they don’t with, having siege units with range 3 might be necessary. In general though I like that I don’t have to spend 15 turns positioning so that all my units arrive in the bombard range simultaneously like Civ 6.
I was also able to ABUSE the positioning of units at the start of the industrial age. Took 3 turns to capture Himiko’s size 34 capital.
But if I was in charge, the #1 thing I would do is change the presentation of the different civs. Benjamin Franklin of the Greeks is so ridiculous. I think the game should name cities after the leader, not the Civ. And I think the game could just say “Benjamin Franklin, playing with the bonuses of the Greeks” or something more elegant instead of implying that Benjamin Franklin was in fact the leader of the Ancient Greek Empire.
One other note is that the game is SO complicated. It’s great in a way, I definitely feel like I got $70 worth of video game. But the number of game systems, the unpronounceable units / civs / leaders / cities, and the interactions between all the systems are a lot to take in.
