Every now and then, I have to ask a stupid question, just to make sure you guys remember Im a n00b...

Heres the question...What are the causes for a game dumping to the desktop?...
To narrow it down, Ive only added units...Im thinking its either an INI prob or a faulty PCX icon...but I wanna make sure it might not be something stupid first...Ive checked all the TXT and its right...Ive added 36 units, so I dont wanna do anything I dont have to(checking 36x2 icons is enough for me)...

the question sums up to "are there any reasons other than INI or PCX error, that would dump a game to desktop(regarding units only)"

Oh and while I have your attention...can anyone help me nag Aaglo for a beaver worker?...

When does it dump? set up screen, city screen, advisor screen, map screen, ETC?

I didnt change the LHs...I have run the game with the current LH successfully, I only added the last 18 units since the last successful test(I added the Calormen first, did a screen shot, all worked so far...I added the witch's units...game crashes)

It dumps after you select the scenario...I never see the map...

[edit] Ive checked the INIs...all fine(had to fix a minotaur)...turns out there was a bad FLC for one of aaglos units(caprigor I think...the fixed file is in the post, I just missed it the first time)...could that have caused it?...(I dont think so...the game crashes before the unit moves or "uses the flc")

If you have a tiny map with 31 civs, that can sometimes make it crash to the desktop. I got around that one by having only some of the civs selectable for when the game starts...

ok...in more depth...

I renamed several of the original Civs...the LH info is unchanged...there are 8 civs on a huge map...

the units_32 is unchanged(all added units have settler as icon in editor)

I have checked about half the PCXs and a few(the cobra, and one other I cant remember) were not indexed properly, but I fixed them...it still crashes

do I have to have unit stats set to test?...like att/dam/movement...

check the scenario properties>scenario tab>player options and make sure the number of players is less than or equal to the number of playable civs highlighted, also check it against the players tab info. After I had changed these numbers in sengoku and then added new units to the scenario it changed the numbers around on me and it crashed the same way as what you have going on. It had more players than playable civs I fixed that and it stopped crashing.

This question isn't n00bish. No no, n00bish questions are like "How do you add a leaderhead?" and "Help me Plz Help me".

It's got nothing to do with A/D/M stats. I'd continue checking all the pcxs. It's unusual to crash even before the civ selection screen, which makes me think it may be something to do with the number of players, as Storm Grunt suggests.

I checked it...8 civs...8 players...

it worked fine before I added the last 18 units, and I didnt adjust anything except the units I added, between successful tests...

If the PCXs are a potential cause, they have to be the reason, nothing else is changed...could the PCXs being faulty cause a crash like this?(before civ selection)...I thought a faulty PCX would crash if you looked at the pedia...

There may be something wrong with the sounds in some of those units.

If I were you I'd try removing each unit, one by one, and checking in between, to see which one is causing the problem. Tedious, but probably the best method.

I was hoping to avoid that...

With the sounds?...wonderful...

Ok...so the current method of detection is: remove a unit...save...test...reload original..remove next unit...test...continue...

no...I had the tech tree imported on the first test...it was fine(I didnt look at it yet due to no icons)...

it has to be a unit issue...and from what I can gather, the only way to track the prob down, is to remove each unit and test...<sigh> such a tedious process...and still I have no word on a beaver worker...

I have 18 units that could be the cause...so...I'll make a backup copy...remove a unit and test...kinda like finding the bulb thats burnt out in a strand of Xmas lights...
________UPDATE______________
Whatever the problem was, I caused it by renaming 8 civs, and deleting the rest...I Imported the "Civilization" tab, and it worked fine

:mischief: well, I was on the right track. I feel your pain, hitting a road block like that just makes you want to....:badcomp:

At least you found it,could have been worse ;)

It turns out it was several things...

Many of the units were faulty
I didnt add tech Icons to the tree Weasel made me, so it was an issue
Something happened in the Civilizations tab, that I couldnt ID, but fixed by importing the original rules back...

if you check the narnia thread...I posted the unit previews...

Im not sure about the tech tree you made me...I tried to add 1 Icon to all techs to test and it crashed again(Im used to it again...I had forgotten that SG-1bad used to crash just as much)...maybe you should give it a trial run?...want the BIQ Im using? it has Calormen and Witch's lines added and works...
