    It starts...

Looking around the map we have a lot of good tiles to improve. We also have very good waterresources. I decide to start off by building 2 workboats. I see we have a 3Hammer hill. This would set the time to build to 15 turns, the same amount it would take to build 1 workboat using the forest tile. Since we can't use the deer yet untill cultural expension, I decide to rush for 2 workboats and our growth is set to 0. A very odd move which I hope will pay off in the end :) Those 3 commerce from the sea tiles + the 9 food should, in time, make up for lost growth. We shall see.

Tech is set to bw, and the warrior is send out to pop a hut. As you may have noticed I popped a hut the first turn with maps, which is why I can see a hut to the north.

    Turn 3 (3880 BC)
Tribal village results: a little gold
Our warrior pops the hut and goes it's merry way

    Turn 4 (3840 BC)
    London's borders expand
The deer is now available but I decide to keep working the 3H hill. You can all slap me later if this goes all wrong

    Turn 7 (3720 BC)
    London finishes: Work Boat

    Turn 8 (3680 BC)
    London begins: Work Boat
Tribal village results: a little gold

    Turn 9 (3640 BC)
    Contact made: Mongolian Empire
We found our first AI. Yikes the mongols. They're not all that keen on building civs. We'll need to keep up some sort of army to look strong or sooner or later the Khan will most likely invade.

    Turn 11 (3560 BC)
    Contact made: Incan Empire
    Contact made: German Empire
We meet some more people still no sign of ghandi which is good (we don't want tention because of close borders)

    Turn 14 (3440 BC)
    London finishes: Work Boat

    Turn 15 (3400 BC)
    Research begun: Hunting
    London begins: Warrior
Since we're still at size 1, it seems wiser to grow a little bit (I didn't build those workerboats for nothing) before starting on a worker. I move workers to the fish and will start a worker as soon as the city is size 3 so it can use both watertiles + deer.

    Turn 17 (3320 BC)
    Tribal village results: map
Our brave scout pops another hut and finds Capac's crib. Capac seems low on bonus resources which is good news for us.

    Turn 19 (3240 BC)
    Research begun: The Wheel
    London grows: 2

    Turn 20 (3200 BC)
Our humble 'empire' after 20 turns:

After scouting around the map and having too many map pops from huts I see we have a problem: no copper in site... anywhere. Well a loooooong way north. But since we can't build settlers... Hmm might have to adjust our tech path. Hopefully we can trade for Iron Working. We need it anyway since we got a lot of jungle nearby. All those options... :)

    Turn 21 (3160 BC)
    Tribal village results: map
Which adds a total of 1 (!) tile to our map

    Turn 22 (3120 BC)
    London grows: 3

    Turn 23 (3080 BC)
    London begins: Worker
As planned I switch production to Worker after London grows till 3. So far everything goes as planned :)

    Turn 24 (3040 BC)
    Research begun: Pottery

    Turn 28 (2880 BC)
    London finishes: Worker
Let it complete the warrior to guard city

    Turn 30 (2800 BC)
    Research begun: Writing
Great, we now have pottery, mining and hunting, basically all the worker techs we need. I send the worker to the deer. Next should be the fur since it will provide a happy face which we'll need by that time

    Our city after 30 turns:

And the world map so far:

As you can see Capac got pretty shafted :p

And the safe file. Conroe it's all yours :)

It might be wise to get the Globe Theatre earlier due to all of our health bonuses. If I remember correctly n0xie figured out we could reach a pop 21 with our current resources. If we got the Globe Theatre early we can max out our population early.

    That's if I'm remembering n0xie's statement correctly.

Turn 0 - 2800BC: Nothing to do but press Enter ...

Turn 2 - 2720BC: Buddhism has been founded in a distant land!

Turn 3 - 2680BC: London trains a Warrior and starts another one. This is raging barbs, after all.

Meanwhile, our wandering Warrior locates Germany, just NE of Cuzco.

Turn 7 - 2520BC: I MM London to complete both the Warrior and Writing next turn.

Turn 8 - 2480BC: Writing is learned and I start on Alphabet next. And, our Warrior is trained so I start us on a Library.

Turn 9 - 2440BC: We have 8 forests within our city radius giving us +4 health. I really don't think it is a good idea to chop any of them, so I send our Worker outside the city radius (and our cultural borders) to chop the library.

Turn 10 - 2400BC: Ack! Chop the Library! were my instructions. How about 10 hammers from a forest chop! Well, better than nothing, I guess.

Turn 14 - 2240BC: :hmm: The next chop will be good for 8 hammers.

Turn 15 - 2200BC: So much for the chop, a barb Warrior is going after our Worker.

Turn 16 - 2160BC: Our fur gets pillaged and London begins rioting.

Turn 18 - 2080BC: London completes a Library and begins training a Warrior. We are about to lose our deer to barb pillaging.

Turn 19 - 2040BC: There goes the deer  ...

Turn 20 - 2000BC: Hey, another goody hut! :yeah: I will have to leave it to Ruff_Hi to pop it, though.

Having played 20 turns, I leave the game where I started it; needing to hook up the fur and the deer. While I uncovered a little more of the map, I did not manage to meet any new civs.

I leave you with a couple of screenshots of London:

Good thing we got food a plenty: a little bit of angry men won't harm us! I'd say whip them!! Hmm, no slavery. Oh well than we'll just have to make them happy...

We could remove the 3Hammer worker and add it as specialist scientist to get that acadamy going. Although we might need to sidetrack to learn how to use a bow to scare of pesky barbarians. This is going to be a problem if they come charging at us with axemen...

Well at least we got an exciting start :D
Did you manage to save our worker though? That would really hurt if we lost him...

Archery is looking pretty good right about now ...

Maybe ... Our worker is being defended by the wounded Warrior in the screenshot. Nice, huh? Not sure what I was :smoke: but I may have lost us our Worker, as well.

Hmm I just read in another thread that they patched the barbs with 1.61 too... That could explain a thing or two...

Well, since there's been no word from ruff-hi I guess I'll go ahead and take it. Works better for me anyways as I'll be out of town all weekend. I'll play this one tonight.

    Got it.

    Sounds good to me :)

Btw do you guys think 4 is enough or should we try to get 1 possibly 2 more players in? I don't know how many of you get the time to play as most of you no doubt play in other SG's as well.

Turn 0, 2000 BC: I agree on taking a quick jaunt to Archery, so switch research. Take the citizen off the forested plains hill and assign him as a scientist. We still finish the warrior in one and boost up our GP.

IT: The barb attacks our wounded warrior guarding the worker and falls. We’re still alive with another barb just popping into view. We’re also considered the fourth most cultured civilization.

    Warrior>Warrior

Turn 1, 1960 BC: Our exploring warrior pops the hut, and gets a map of the area.

Turn 3, 1880 BC: We learn Archery, and start back on Alphabet. Judaism has been found somewhere.

    IT: Warrior>Archer

Turn 5, 1800 BC: Worker finishes camp and begins a road.

Turn 6, 1760 BC: Not for sure why, but we lost our unhappy citizen. I set him as a second scientist to speed up the Academy. Edit: Just realized the road connecting the camp was finished.

IT: Fredrick wants to trade Animal Husbandry for Writing. I decide to go ahead with the deal hoping to make some early friends.

Alphabet>Drama (for now, need to do some trading)

    Turn 7, 1720 BC:
HC: We get Mysticism and Agriculture; we give Writing.
GK: We get Masonry; we give Writing.

Since we want to go for the CS slingshot I set research to Meditation and Priesthood.

Archer>Walls- I wasn’t for sure what to build here, but figured walls would be good due to the raging barbs.

Turn 8, 1680 BC: The worker starts work on a camp on the deer.

Turn 11, 1600 BC: We learn Meditation and start on Priesthood. Merit Ptah is born, and builds an Academy.

Turn 13, 1520 BC: We learn Priesthood, and start on Code of Laws. I switch off of walls and begin the Oracle. It’ll take 25 turns to complete. There are still five turns left on the walls.

Turn 15, 1440 BC: Some barbs attack our warrior guarding the furs, and falls to our troops.

Sorry, my wife was watching the old Dolly Parton movie 9 to 5 so I kind of stopped taking notes. Anyway…

    Notes:
    • Code of Laws will be finished next turn. I’m thinking it might be wise to go for Drama so we can get the Globe Theatre. Once the wheat is connected we’ll have a max health of 12. Happiness is the only thing holding us back.
    • The Oracle will be complete in 18 turns.
    • We’ll have another great scientist in seven turns. I suggest merging him.
    • We need to get some cottages up soon. We currently have none.

    Roster:
    N0xie
    Conroe
    Ruff-hi- Up
    Methos- Just Played

    I’ll be gone until Sunday.

Got it. Question: Do we have an eventual partner in mind yet or are we just waiting to see what happens there?

Edit: Re-read the history and there is one mention of Gandhi as our future partner. Ok, will aim for him but will keep in mind that these things change. I am playing a private game along these lines and I was targetting Gandhi. Everything was going well until he got taken out by the mongals. Luckily, I was also on very good terms with Katherine.

I put in Ghandi and Frederic as potential partners, but we'll see how it goes. First we'll need to survive the rampaging barbs ;)

I see we aren't in slavery - is that a variant or can we revolt to that?

I couldn't get the autologger to work so you will just have to put up with my idiosyncratic style. I review our great empire - well, single city empire. I decide that we need to expand and so I stop building the oracle and build a settler. What - it will not let me. Ok, back to the oracle then.

Question: why aren't we using slavery? I will convert some time later to this.

    Objectives of my round:
    - find Gandhi - become best mates
    - find other civs

First turn up, Khan asks (well, demands) meditation. That costs nothing (or next to nothing) so I say YES. I promote our scout (who is really a warrior) to woodsman I - hopefully, we can get him promoted to II so that he can move faster in the woods. I stop building a farm on the wheat / corn (whatever) as it is outside the BFC and only brings health (happiness is our current population size constraint). I move the worker to chop some forests (outside the BFC). I also will learn mathematics so that we get 50% more hammers from our forest chops. I pre-chop 5 forests (marked in game by 'auto chop'). This means they will yield their hammers in 1 turn - great for building wonders (similar to the caravans of CIV II).

We learn code of laws and found Confucianism - convert for the happy pill and set London to grow to size 7 (remove 1 scientist). Sign OBs with Fred and our religion spreads to him via the river (also spreads to Khan and Happy). Khan later flips to Hindu (guess who has that?).

Happy asks for alphabet - no. Learn mathematics, start drama.

Oracle complete with 1 chop, select civil service (bureaucracy!) for the free tech. Revolt to bureaucracy and slavery at the same time. I trade Calendar for Iron to Khan (guess who has no iron locally!). Guess we will need to defend ourselves with sticks (great big ones and small pointy ones).

After we learnt Drama, I selected Literature for the Great Library - it is due in 1. We should use those pre-chopped forests to finish the GL quickly. We pop a scientist who will teach us philosophy (for another religion) but I decide that to merge him instead.

We have a barb problem …

We have already taken down 1 barb axe but more are on the way. It is good that we don't have many terrain improvements to pillage.

Finally, we meet Katherine (find Moscow) and Gandhi (no idea where Delhi is). Fred asks as to cancel deals with Khan - as he is one of our targets, I say YES. We have two scouts and a warrior scout out surveying the countryside. All are West of London. I build a barracks (we will need promoted units quickly).

Here is our city … try and chop forests inside our borders as it appears we get more hammers per chop.

You will notice that our two targets have different religions. We need to learn hindu as quickly as possible and flip to it (bringing Fred too). Try and keep on the good side of Kathy as she forms PAs fairly easily too. We need to watch who we trade with from now one - decide who our target's 'worst enemy' is and don't trade with that person.

Ouch! Seems we won't have any decent units untill very very late

Oeee we could have used Pacifism with the GL coming in soon... We'll just tech for it the old fashion way I guess

Ouch again... This might be the shortest lived OCC ever if those barbs decide to get fresh. Having no metals nor horses really does suck with raging barbs...

I agree, a lot of F4 pressing is involved :D

I'll play my 10 turns tonight and post tomorrow. Great turnsets so far people. :)

    Roster Check:
    n0xie - got it
Conroe - Got fresh with barbs
ruff_hi - Found the missing ally
Methos - Likes Dolly Parton movies over CIV

I'm sorry for the delay. If you really want to know why read here :p

Okee where were we. Aah yeah, we're doing something nearly impossible, trying to get a PA on OCC with raging (thanks to 1.61 also smart) barbarians. What were we thinking?

    Let's see how we're doing:

Well seems like we're far ahead in tech. That's good. No metal. That's not so good. No horses. Hmmm. And a stack of Barbs coming our way.

We will call this Barbarian Wars: Clone Wars!

    Turn 89 (650 BC)
    We press enter

    Turn 90 (625 BC)
    Research begun: Philosophy
    Archer defeats (2.43/3): Barbarian Warrior
Our archer kills a warrior outside our city. Go away you Hooligen!
I'll upgrade him with Hill defense I and move to the hill next to stop the onslaught which is coming our way. The next archer I'll give city defense and he'll guard our city/kingdom/city stat/whatever.

    Turn 91 (600 BC)

    Turn 91 (600 BC)
    London finishes: Archer
    London begins: The Great Library
    Archer promoted: Guerilla I
    London grows: 8
    Warrior defeats (1.70/2): Barbarian Warrior
Another warrior in the East joins our xp

Now with the archer promoted and in place we await for the flood of barbs heading our way:

    Turn 92 (575 BC)
    Warrior promoted: Woodsman II
    Archer promoted: City Garrison I
    Archer defeats (3.00/3): Barbarian Archer
The first archer dies on our Hill/Fortified/Garrison I archer. Free xp :D

The 2nd archer closes in and I move our Woodsman II to the hill just in case.

    Turn 93 (550 BC)
    Archer promoted: Guerilla II
Scout loses to: Barbarian Archer (2.61/3)

The 2nd barb archer tries to make a run for it:

But runs in on our woodsmen the next turn and dies horribly while his buddy the axeman thinks he can have a go at our now Guarilla II archer and dies horribly.

    Turn 94 (525 BC)
    Archer defeats (2.55/3): Barbarian Axeman

That were some intense turns... We thwarted 2 archers, 2 warriors and an axe with a warrior and an archer. Promotions do make all the difference. Because of all the excitement I see I made a gross error by starting Philosophy (for pacifism) since we don't have MetalCasting yet which we obviously want for the forge (and possibly the colossos since we'll probably be the only city on a coast tile...). I decide to switch anyway. Then I decide to check civics, just to be sure. *gasp* We have monotheism but haven't switched to OR yet. Oh my, that would have saved a couple of turns. I revolt immediatly.

Meanwhile our worker is busy chopping his ass off. In case you're wondering why we have an angry face: that's food for the whip later ;)

Note, we can trade for sailing (lighthouse) which I have neglected since while building the GL, the next obvious choice would be either NE or GT. Feel free to veto and go for Lighthouse since the 2 extra food might actually be better.

    Diplomacy:

Catherine comes knocking on our door. Although she's cute, I refuse to give her Alphabet. Any other tech I wouldn't mind...

Capac is our neighbour and on good footing with us. India is our potential ally on bad terms with us. It should be the other way around. Oh well since I don't want to make things worse with Ghandi, I refuse to Capac which adds a nice -1 modifier... We should determine who we want as friends and who not. Atm Frederick seems like a more suitable candidate than Ghandi, then again, if we just convert Ghandi would have no problem with us... Ideas?

    Turn 99 (400 BC)
The turn in which the GL is whippable. I whip it just because it feels so good. You can hate me later Conroe :p

    Next up: Conroe
