From what we've seen, there are two river tiles in the game: navigable rivers and minor rivers. Navigable river tiles are the tiles that are graphically wide enough so that (certain? all?) naval units can traverse through them. Minor river tiles cannot be traversed by naval units and are visibly narrow enough to show that they are impassable.

In all the vids I've watched so far, it's very awkward to listen to someone who discusses rivers, as the official name for the tile "navigable rivers" is 6 syllables long. I guess Firaxis was bothered by it enough to not call the minor rivers "non-navigable rivers" and avoid the 7 syllable monster.

I mean, what would be wrong with calling them them "wide river" and "narrow river" tiles?

Edit: Edited to clarify the criticism, here :) I have no problem with the word "navigable", it's just awkward to repeat and write over and over again.

They're not necessarily the same.

In real life sure, but in Civ 7 they are. The navigable rivers are all wider than the non-navigable rivers (oh god, I discovered term that's actually worse than navigable).

There's a lot of unfamiliar language to the series that might sound clunky:
I think new, educational language can be a good thing. But an awkward 4 syllable word for a common, simple game mechanic is like nails on a chalkboard for me.

I hear you, it does sound clunky, but I can't think of a shorter word that is equally precise.

I know you did not complain about "Vegetated" and "Wet" but I like these a lot because they really speak to the streamlining of the game's mechanics.

We no longer need to worry about "forest" and "jungle" distinctions for abilities like in Civ 6 - now we have "Vegetated." Likewise, "marsh" and "oasis" are simply combined to be "Wet." I think it's really clever.

A "Vegetated" tile on Grass is forest, and on Plains is jungle. A "Wet" tile on Plains is a Watering Hole, on Desert an Oasis, etc.

Do you just hate big words or something? Navigable is exactly the right word here.
No, I don't like having to say long words for something said often, when there is an obvious simpler choice.

For example, I'm glad that a can of soda is called a can and not a cylindrical drinking capsule. It's accurate, but would get old quickly.

At least non-navigable rivers are referred to as "Minor Rivers" instead of "Non-Navigable" :)

But what's a shorter, easier-to-say word that has the same meaning as navigable? Wide isn't good enough.

These are fine.

Vegetated is a bit clunky, but I don't think we'll actually be discussing vegetated tiles much. Forests and jungles still have different yields, so I think people will refer to them as such. For all we know, there may still be different techs or abilities to clear them, which would further the need to differentiate them.

The first thing to my head was "waterway" but of course that doesn't necessarily refer to rivers, so . . .

I guess I'm missing something, why isn't wide good enough? All of the navigable river tiles are very clearly wider than the NN ones.

My only other suggestion is "Major" since they use "Minor" to describe the other rivers, but I don't know if that's accurate enough.
"Major" works, but IMO "navigable" isn't a difficult word and is much more precise. :dunno:

I don't think so actually. I am pretty sure for example ALL "Wet" features just give +1 Food.

Tile yields in general seem to be really pared down and simplified. I am pretty sure they're grouping all these features together across the board.
