I think that it would be cool to be able to name places on the map, like mountain ranges, river, oceans etc. U would be able to see the name on the ingame map, kinda like in SIMCITY 4: Rush Hour!
I cant really think of any strategic value to this, but it would be cool to think in your mind, "I'll send my troops of the English Mountains and attack over the Blue Valley River!" It might also help to know at which parts of the map u were planning on attacking or mining etc. Im not much of a modder. Just a idea!

HERE IS A SCREENSHOT FROM SIMCITY 4 OF WHAT I WAS THINKING ABOUT FOR CIV3:

it seems a waste of extra memory to me. I would be more sattisfied with more options in the editor, more units, more buildings, and/or more techs.

It's hard to imagine any real gameplay value this would have, but I still think it's a neat idea. I don't need it, but I certainly wouldn't complain if they did throw it in.

Its been done. ;)

In the spanish GOTM, cracker put named provinces in. He basically created a 0,0,0 bonus resource for each province, and had the graphic for that resource be an overlay of the province name.

Doesn't allow on-the-fly naming, although that could be done with a unit in a similar method.... :hmm:

Yeah, but it would probably be better if they didn't include it. If they did, it would just get more and more jumbled and complicated.

actually I know where you're coming from here....there have been many nights, VERY late nights, where I've been playing for hours...and after a while one mountain range starts to look like all the others. It would be nice to be able to say HEY! Where the heck did the Rocky Mountains go?!?!? As far as game play, no, its not that big of a deal but on those HUGE maps where one mountain range looks just like another it might be useful as far as knowing where you need to look. Would be nice to even be able to use a "Locate Landmark" on the map, kinda like you have with "Locate City" option. As for programing etc. well I'm not a programer so I'll leave that up to the folks that know what they are talking about LOL

I've never had trouble finding mountain ranges and stuff. What you do is just remmember what cities its next to. Usually I don't even care that much about the terrain unless I'm at war (because then I can use deffensive values and stuff) or I'm using workers. All I do is just look at what cities the mountains are next to and of which civ, then look at the minimap at its approximate location.

It was in SMAC, and I loved it. Chiefly because of it looking good, and the inherent opportunity to name an ocean or two after yourself, but I found it actually had one gameplay advantage; it made it easier to remember where things during the AI's turn took place.

The drain on system resources would be minimal. Less than that from unit fidgets and other li'l eye candy animations.

TAM also sports provinces and regions named via 0f0s0c resources.

I agree with THE LAST CONFORMIST. I like this just because of its creative value, it makes the game more customizable and personal. In real life Great LEaders always name mountains and rivers after themselves.

Interesting. It would be nice to rename areas to be like states. I currently rename my units to represent Divisions and regiments, so I'd like it.

Then again, I'd like cities to be set-up liek Sim City, and much much much more micro management, so that you could build trenches and move troops, etc, in your sim city view of teh city... but that's just me and a game like that wouldn't sell.. would take a year for one game!!

Hehe I do that to, until it becomes far too tedious.

I mainly stick to naming ships.

I'd like it if you could give strategic orders to your units and watch a close up of the battles like in Legion.

Very cool feature. I'd like at least to name states and provinces; in many civs like America and Rome they were rather important. After all, we need Delaware represented in the game! :D

Rivers and mountains of course could get names, and the AI could have a set of names for each thing.

I do this all the time in my head, so I think it'd be a great idea. "I'll send my troops from the Korean Island and land them in the Western Desert", etc.

Er, how do you rename units? I only get that option when a leader is created.
