Although not inhaled or intramuscularly injected, Civilization is considered one of the most deadly drug in the known world. Here are my experiences with civilization:

Stage 1-The Experimenter

Introduced to Civ by friends. Was curiose. Curiosity is a motivator. The user is learning about the ways of civilization, and the effect brought on by the drug. The user is learning to trust/mistrust civilization and its effects. Playing Civ is a new feeling not in the normal range of emotions. THe user can still relate to people.

Stage 2-Regular User
The decision to do Civ has been made. Joins many clubs and forums. The user now seeks to play civ quite often. There is increased comfort and confidence in the use of the drug. The peer group that the person hangs out with also uses this drug. Playing Civ is more important now. Tolerance develops. The person becomes cocky. The user has some problems relating to others.

Stage 3-Preoccupied User
The user is thinking more about Civ. The user wants to play Civ constantly. Blackouts start to occur. Relationships are difficult. The person clearly wants to use the drug. The person plays civ when alone, which is very dangerous. The user still thinks he or she has control.

Stage 4-The Addict
The addict can no longer get high off of civ. The user must take the drug to survive. There is no choice: you must use. The person relates to civ, not people. The addict will use any time available to play civ. The behaviour is both obnoxious and intimitating. Has only 1 hour of sleep per day due to doing this drug with another user in Australia. Grades drop drastically, user is cut off from his/her social life, with the exception of the small group of other addicts that exist. Civ is the user's life.

Are you guys experiencing the same reactions?
What stage are you guys at?

Well Vlad, i would have to say i am in stage 2. I am happy to be in stage 2 and hope i can mantain my control on the drug and never advance to stages 3 and 4

I am disrespectful to Dirt! Can you not see that I am serious?

Stage 4.
Saw a little ad in a computer magazine to start. It didn't look all that great graphically(pictures in the ad) but I noticed all these "blah blah game of blah blah" awards. It all starts so innocently...

Stage 4 Civ Addict. Something wierd happened to me in my latest game. I went into a meeting with the German emissary, and all of a sudden he started doing the marcarina and was doing it to polka music!!! Now that's one powerful drug!

Stage 5, a newly discovered level.

Significant other boogies, or threatens to.
Pets are taken by Humane Society for neglect.
Hallucinatons occur in the night when you think your fortress is being stormed.
Straight jacket is only means of keeping hands off keyboard.

It's In The Way That You Use It

I change between stage 3 and 4. I am at stage 3 right now, because my desire to be a MCSE is so great, but as soon as I am done, watch out Civ2 world!

I was dreaming of city management last night. My hamster has been reposesed! Stage 3.5: dizzying highs, crashing lows, constant need, have grown roots in my chair and am beginning to photosynthesis.

level 3
relationship difficulties.
tweeking need to play if gone without for a while.
zoning out while involved in a game.
dreaming of strategy at night.
but im ok...no problems.. right?

I would label those of us who are addicted to this most powerful drug as civkies. And in that spirit I submit the following:
-If you find yourself thinking about civ strategy during the day, all day, you might be a civkie.
-If given the choice between sex and civ, you have to think about it, you might be a civkie.
-If your entire family has moved out, and you didn't notice because you have been playing, for two days, straight, you might be a civkie.
-If you purchase a new super big monitor, so you can see the game better, you might be a civkie.
-If your family has ever been woken up late into the night by your shouts of "@#@$% Russians!!!", you might be a civkie.
-If you regularly contributing to Civ forums..Hey, wait a minute! I guess I am close to civkie status. "sigh"

I'm definitely level 4.
Grades from grade 6:
English average: 89
French average: 92
Math average: 95
Computers: 98
Art: 82
Science: 95
History: 85
and others
Overall average: 89

This term average:78!!!!

Hey, this could be our next poll!

I am proud to say that I am on stage 2.

If you want to play a littel before you go to bed and you later realise you are late for work, then you might be an addict.

stage x - desperation stage.

My CIV II CD has suffered a major schratch, thus preventing me from playing. This unfortunate incident has taken me from stage 4 to desperation... Kind of like having a cold turk.
wakes up screaming in the night, sweating cold sweat, trembling, can't hold food...

Nightmare

All too true!!!

Thus far, been able to maintain at stage 2. This forum both allows me to get my Civ fix without actually playing, but also ecourages me to be constantly thinking about civ even when at work, so contributes to my addiction. What a dilema

Just thought of another one:

If you spend time in Civ forums while at work, when your boss is in the same room, you might be a Civkie.

If you've ever called the Microprose Customer Support hotline and said "Hi, my name is John.... and I'm a... I'm a Civkie"

Tech support, thanks for holding 30 minutes, what's your stupid freekin question and/or what did you screw up this time?

OK, looks like it might be time to do a Letterman's top 10 Civkie's... my vote for number 1 would be Håkan's !goodjob!

Most, if not all of us, are in touch with that one. English 201 at 9:15 am kinda went by the sidelines every M-W-F a few years back.

They just keep coming and coming...

If your significant other finds three hundred and fifty nine 3.5" floppies with nothing but civ.sav games on them, you know, the ones that were so good you had to save them to play again later.....

You might be a Civkie.

Hmmm I guess that right now I on level 1-2!!!
But once upon a time I was level 5 or higher, there was a time in my life, three or four months, where all I did was wake up on the keyboard and countinue playing Civ2. I went for hours, even days without eating, only remembering to eaet when my stomake cramped from hunger and only leaving the house to bye some more cola.....
The the military came and took me away from my computer for a year and after that i somehow got a few jobs in other coutries and I just got home a few months ago - and here I am playing Civ2 again and surfing the net for Civ subject and dreaming about Civ3!!!!!!!

Somebody help me......

I'm fairly new to this, but I'm already at least level 3. Sleep is now an option (except maybe at work ). The only thing that interrupted it is my Level 4+ addiction to my fantasy football league.

My god I'm pathetic.

I'm in between Stage 2-Stage 3 at times. I have been as bad as Stage 3.5-Stage 4 earlier in my life (for Civ 1). That time cost me an engagement; she decided to find a user who was more compatible with her system requirements. I won't go into any of the lines about sockets or ports or inputs that the situation begs for, but suffice it to say their interface was quite graphic-al.

I completely agee with Haakan's observation. Done that more that once... Once over a holiday break when I was in college I sat down and started a game when I woke up in the morning (Civ 1). I finished it about mid evening that night, then realized that I had not gotten out of the chair the entire time. Yikes!
