On the topic of naval aviation, they should specialize it, as so you must study a tech called 'Naval Aviation' to be able to build carriers and fighters based on carriers. When jets come out, you must study a tech for naval jet aircraft and carriers that can deploy them. On the editor, they should have a tag for whether or not a plane could be carrier-based or not because it's ridiculace that F-15s and B-2 can fly onto a landing strip about the length of two football fields.

Okay, I've never played Civilization; I heard that Civ 3 didn't have an editor, so you are saying we could make planes carrier-based if the next game did... I'd buy that game.

My friend sells carrier-based F-22s and F-23s at NationStates. It would be great to have these in a game. I also designed a plane that can operate on water, but that would be difficult to include as a modification. :p

Do you think there could be some kind of Mobile Offshore Base for the B-52s? I supose the equivalent in Alpha Centauri would be a floating airbase.

Interesting, that there are people around here, that never played Civ. But it's nice to see!
In Civ3 you have already carriers, which can carry all kind of planes. What CadetEmperor proposes is more some kind of change to the tech tree , and to make some planes not loadable on a carrier.

I agree - it is indeed ridiculous to be able to base B-2's on a carrier

Also, please, please, please give us the option to base transport helicopters on carriers - it should be something like the helicopter carriers the marines have. They should enable us to land units a few squares behind the coast. This would give the player many more options when launching an attack. I'd love to be able to do something like what the marines did in southern iraq during OIF - taking off from the LST's in choppers during the fight for Umm Qasr.

How about ASW aircraft like the P-3 Orion that can patrol out of coastal cities for ships and subs and that can optionally attack subs? Would save on having to stage ships off the coast on sub patrol... Maybe have just a helicoptor unit with a short range that can be based on carriers as well as in cities.

In the Civ3 editor, you can disable the ability of bombers to land on carriers (I routinely do this when creating my own scenarios). You can also create new units, so I create the dive bomber (for simplicity sake I don't bother with torpedo aircraft). I agree, though, that the standard civ rules should limit the aircraft on carriers and also should cut down their range (land-based fighters went a lot further than carrier aircraft in WWII).

offshore naval base or engeneer ships.. your fleet is half way around the world and your battle ship is damaged.. now with that kinda a repair unit they could both fortifay and it would be repaired soon..

I agree in the case of B-2s not being able to land on aircraft carriers, that does seem pretty rediculous. But I think the B-17s or whatever those WWII-style early bombers are should still be allowed to operate from carriers since heavy bombers were regularly modified during WWII to do exactly that. Also, instead of having to capture a city and build an airport in order to re-base aircraft, I think it would be cool to have the ability to build rough airstrips on flat terrain. That way, a long-distance or multiple-theater war could be waged more realistically, like the Pacific Islands campaign during WWII.

i don't know about this... i've played rts's like that, and i've always felt restricted by the narrow range of often bad fighters that carriers can support. the b-2 should just have an uber-long range, making carriers pointless

It would be interesting to have a separate long-range strategic bomber unit, like the B-52, available earlier in the game than the B-2. Maybe have range extended to cover the entire map with the discovery of tanker aircraft technology or something.

The mods that I make do not allow bombers, I did not say that I didn't create naval bombers. I usually copy the fighter unit and call it a dive bomber. I give the dive bomber a weaker defense and a higher bombard capability.

This also would simulate the limited range of planes that take off from carriers. Sorry, Bassdude, but the only case I ever heard of in WWII when (traditionally) land-based bombers took off from a carrier was the Doolitle raid. They had to greatly modify those planes (B-24's stripped to the lightest they could and stacked with extra gas cans and far less ordinance) and the entire unit was destroyed (sacrificed if you will).

True, the mission was far more symbollic than it was strategic, but it does show that bombers launching from carriers is possible. I thought it was B-25s but you're prob right.

Instead of having the fighter unit carry out bombing missions from carriers in the place of heavy bombers, I think a tactical strike aircraft should be available to all nations, not just the American F-15 UU. Maybe something like the A-6 Intruder as a strike aircraft while using F-14s for naval fighters?

CadetEmperor is right there is no way in hell a b-2 can land on a carrier. You could have the idea of building bigger carriers to use B-2s and less you wanted to be real. ;)

Surely you mean B-25s and not B-24s ;) To be fair though, they weren't really destroyed so much as they ran out of fuel sooner than hoped and crashed all over China and the Pacific (but most of the crewmen from the 16 planes survived).

Anyway, I'd love to see significant improvements to Naval Warfare for Civ4; the whole idea that ironclads can regularly sink subs is ridiculous (not to mention how wooden ships in good numbers can whip up on a modern fleet), and that the AI never uses Naval forces effectively. If they would just balance the naval forces for Civ4, I'd be quite happy and might start to field a decent navy (even if i had to deal with B-2s flying off carrier decks). But if they do implement decent naval aviation, it'd be great; I'd be one happy flyboy :D

How did you force some aircraft to be land-based only? I'm interested.

I agree. But I think first the ai should learn how to use special units .
