in my current game i'm on an island with indians, i know where they are but i don't want to contact them yet, after i explore the island i decide to make it my island, so if i attack (and destroy) indians, will it hurt my reputation?

That depends on whether the Indians have contact with any other civs. You can do whatever you like to them if they don't and your reputation should not be hurt. However, if you do start a war with them make sure you destroy them before they get any contacts. If they already have contacts with other civs, try to get them to declare war on you. Otherwise, your reputation will suffer.

Sadly, that`s not true.... i had several games where folks I met for the first time that turn knew about me having "cheated" others, long dead, despite the fact they`d never had contact to them.....

"We know how you backstabbed the Indians..." - they`d never heard of them.....

Attacking a civ is not "cheating" them! As long as you don't have an alliance, MPP, or trade deal with a rival civ, you can go ahead and attack them without damaging your reputation. Reputation is just a measure of whether you live up to your commitments.

are you sure that the Indians never had contact with ANY other civs in the game? I've been able to backstab without reputation hit as long as the civ i do it to hasn't had any contact at all with anyone else...

That`s how it`s supposed to be, but in the game I just described "cheating" consisted of sending units into their land, and then attacking without warning. No broken treaty or abused ROP (it was before that was even possible). So do be careful.....

That is true. I have suffered a reputation hit by trespassing and then declaring war, no MPP, no ROP...

on what level did you play? this was monarch, and they were dead before they had map making (I know since I stopped just before I killed their last defender and got peace for all tech they had - they didn`t even have writing yet...). Right the next turn they asked me to leave or declare war - well, then, there you go, I left hrough their town, hehe..

Actually I`ve seen that often enough, and it`s not so unrealistic - after all when i meet a Civ and it has lots of towns with names of a different civ, I know they`re warmongers.....

what sucks is that Firaxis doesn`t state what the rules are - they do make sense!

regent. just because they were dead before mapmaking and writing doesn't mean they didn't have contact with other civs. I agree, though. THings would be a lot easier if Firaxis let us know all of the rules in the game....

since we were on an island surrounder by 10 tiles of ocean all around in this case it did mean that they knew noone. I have often seen strange contacts, like I have the Great lighthouse and find a "new" continent by suiciding Galley across open ocean - and somehow the civs there already know my neighbours..... But usually, when you meet them they won`t have contact and if you don`t sell it they`ll have it after a few turns, even if the didn`t make contact (checkd that via multi-cheat)....
