Hey, my first post here but I have been a long time Civ 1 fanatic.

Here is my situation:Warlord, 3000bc, 5 cities, 2 chariots, 2 horseback, 2 phalanx, 123 gold, discoveries every 15 turns, researching monarchy, Contact with the Chinese.

I consider this to be a sound start from what I have read here but I don't really know where to go from here. Any tips?

yeah, that's a pretty good start. Here are a few general tips:

- build a few more settlers (should use some of the gold to rush build the settlers) and build more cities. Also, it's good to have 1 or 2 settlers around to irrigate lands and build roads b/t all your cities.

- gather all your mounted units and attack the Chinese. At this stage AI usually have 1 or 2 units (warrior/phalanx) in the city, so it's easy capture their cities.

- switch to monarchy as soon as u get it (you already know that)

- be sure to demand tributes often

- expand, expand, expand!

Feel free to ask if you have specifc questions.

Thunderfall's advice sounds solid, given the information you have provided.

As a Veteran Player of the Original Civ, I'd recommend reading through the Civ I forum, perhaps starting with http://forums.civfanatics.com/Forum6/HTML/000005.html I am not a veteran of the original, but others are!

And thank you HEIROPHANT,

Another platitude to yourself, braggadocio!

Assuming that your first cities are "on the inside" of your city group, or at least sheltered in some way from the Chinese, build settlers/expand only from the edges of the group. Set one or more of your biggest earliest cities to building a Wonder or two.

Which wonder is most useful is partly personal taste, partly the map size (you didn't say how big), partly the land structure (archipelago or big continental mass) and partly where you've built your first cities. If you're on a small island then Lighthouse will be useful to help you get off it. If you're on the coast of a larger island Colossus will be good to start a science city. Pyramids are always good at King level and below for speeding the growth of each city.

First "strategic" error is to research monarchy. It's my humble opinion but it's better getting Republic which boost everything including your techs research, so you can research communism if you like. But personnally, I've never researched monarchy. Or very late in 19 or 20 century !!! because that's the only tech left to be researched... You shouldn't neither research horses for chariots would be more efficient. The most important for that period is trade to build caravan. Assuming that Chineese are honorable, try to get a maximum in trade with them. Don't forget to have Railroad ASAP and also gunpowder, just in case. I usually get musketeer before researching offensive units. Ok, that's my way of playing, which may not suit with yours.

If I go straight for democracy I could get it by around 1600 B.C. on warlord, but I don't think I can get statue built by then. I usually try to balance my research out.

Hi Genghis, it seems that you are talking about Civ instead of Civ2. In Civ2 monarchy is a very good government as it supports 3 units without hindering production, while going republic can hurt the production. Also, in Civ2, horseback riding is required in order to get the Wheels, unlike in Civ.
Anyway, gunpower and railroad are out of the question that early in the game. He could conquer most of the Chinese before any civilization developes trade!

It all depends on the situation. If you have the enemies breathing down your neck and harassing your settlers then you need to switch to Monarchy and quickly deal with them. On easier levels, Republic is the way to go! But on King and above, Republic quickly gives you a handicap in unhappiness, but it allows more cities.

So in conclusion, go for republic (only need 2 extra techs), get ahead in science with it, then switch to Fundy to take over the world. OR do it while you're in republic and bribe the world, but never switch to Democracy while still at war.

Update: I finished the game, slaughtered the Chinese and did ok (82%). I just started a game on Prince and from what I see I have improved a lot: it's 1140 A.D. I have 34 cities, everything covered in railroads, sewer systems, banks, universities, factories, Mikes chap, women's suffrage, The Pyramids, Adam Smith's etc Democracy, discoveries every 2 turns. I'll let you know how this game turns out so I can have my work critiqued. It will be a few days, I have my grandmothers funeral to attend.

Thx for the previous advice, it and the war academy helped lots.

Just a question, how big is your map?

On prince, if you have a big map, you should have MANY more cities than that! Not that it's bad to play perfectionism than expansionism, but if you want a high score it's better to expand earlier.

You cant't make that kind of blanket statement, no matter the map size.

Go the path to Chivalry next, after Monarchy.
Just my opinion.

The only problem with democracy is the threat of overthrow of government, However if you have the statue of liberty democracy is a nice government indeed.

To keep making progress, you'll need to develop your play past Monarchy.
Build temples and court houses, and adjust luxuries.

No, I use super growth and research with republics and luxuries or monarchy/communism with mass expansion.

You have to take advantage of Monarchy as soon as possible. It's much better to have a government that you don't want for a little bit and then upgrade when you have found the one you want than to spend several thousand years in despotism having to suffer all the penalties before you get to democracy or communism or whatever.
